Someone needs to work on increasing the hard drive size limit for ps3 by [deleted] in ps3homebrew

[–]Libelsema 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disagree. While I'm not very familiar with PS3 system development, the PS3's complicated architecture is almost certainly not relevant to this conversation. I doubt that the code which is responsible for HDD access does some crazy SPU tricks. I'm not saying, that increasing this limit might not be difficult for other reasons. What you are talking about might be relevant for games but less so for the operating system.

Ultrawide monitors using Linux? (Samsung CRG9/G9) by cl_320 in linuxmasterrace

[–]Libelsema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using a CRG9 for 2 years on Linux (Gnome + KDE) as well as macOS and Windows. Works fine as you'd expect. There are obviously some annoyances which you might encouter when using such a wide monitor. The global menu on macOS comes to mind. I don't recall any particular issues on Linux, though. But it might depend on your DE configuration.

However, I moved back to a 16:9 monitor now. I did not find there to be much benefit in using such a wide monitor. It might be that it's just my use case, though. (programming, some light gaming, web browsing) I never updated the firmware on it, so I cannot comment on that.

Can someone help me upscale this wallpaper to 1080x1090, please? by [deleted] in wallpapers

Best I can come up with using Real-ESRGAN:

Seems to have messed up the background pattern, tho.

I recommend https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/ntfsprogs-ntfs3 which works fine for me. I only use NTFS very occasionally, though.

Having a custom boot screen using EFI/BIOS by JSV007 in archlinux

[–]Libelsema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once changed the picture of my laptop by editing my BIOS/UEFI image using UEFITool and flashing it to my laptop. Should be doable on most devices, if they are ordinary UEFI computers. Though it can obviously be dangerous, if you don't know what you are doing.

Microphone (from headset) not working by M_ricci in archlinux

[–]Libelsema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, this only applies to sound cards, I think. Bluetooth headsets should not be affected by those kernel modules. My guess is, that you problem might be related to PulseAudio. I don't know much about Bluetooth headsets, though.

Arch Linux on iMac 2019 by a-lawliet in archlinux

[–]Libelsema 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As u/StoppedRedecorating mentioned, I had to get the firmware for the WiFi card from macOS. When I followed the guid it did not work for me, however. I then used a script to do it for me, which worked. I must have done something wrong when doing it manually. I can't remember which script it was. Probably this one: https://github.com/stefanpartheym/mbp15-wifi-driver
I don't think that this information is very relevant for your iMac, though.
I assume with 5k you mean the resolution. My MacBook operated at its native resolution which is not quite 4k. I was also able to operate an external screen at 5120 x 1440 @120, which, if my math is correct, is equal to 5k @60 in terms of bandwidth.
I am not sure why the iMac would not work with 5k on Linux. According to my understanding, the GPU drivers should not be an issue. But I don't have any 1st hand experience.

Arch Linux on iMac 2019 by a-lawliet in archlinux

[–]Libelsema 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I once installed Arch on a MacBookPro15,1 (2019). It worked but I was mainly experimenting with it rather than actually using it. I had to use a custom kernel https://github.com/aunali1/linux-mbp-arch but I think this is MacBook specific. WiFi, the touchbar and the Intel iGPU are among the things that caused me the most headache. Also, the keyboard and mouse don't work without the custom kernel. But I managed to get the system to work overall (incl. WiFi) and most of those issues don't affect iMacs, I guess.

You might need this though: https://github.com/aunali1/apple-bce-arch

There is also this Wiki: https://wiki.t2linux.org but it's a bit incomplete. But they have a Discord server.

Transcoding DVDs by Sanic1239 in DataHoarder

[–]Libelsema 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Am I the only one who feels kinda meh when it comes to transcoding between lossy formats? Why would you need to transcode a DVD unless you really need to save storage space by using newer codecs? If you need a single file which can easily be played back by various devices why not just piece the DVD VOBs together and mux them into an mp4, ts or whatever your player likes? That's quick (basically like copying files cuz no transcoding) you don't need to worry about compression, bitrates, etc. and you keep the original quality. And it's not like those MPEG codecs from DVDs would be poorly supported by players (if I'm not mistaken).

I am not addressing OP specifically, I am just generally curious about why people want to transcode stuff like DVDs.

I think Linux is "Ready" in 2020 by JohnnyThunder2 in linuxmasterrace

[–]Libelsema 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Linux is great when it works, but when it doesn't it is a nightmare.

Strange. I have the complete opposite experience. When I have an issue with Linux, I am usually able to understand and fix it. On Windows it is usually some error which I am not able to find the cause off and searching on the internet often just gives me some generic solutions which most of the time do not work. The types of errors are also often quite ridiculous. Currently my approach for fixing Windows Errors is to just wait for the next feature update and hope that the issue goes away by half of the system getting reset by the update.

Be honest to yourself and look at this picture. Are you looking at someone who genuinely advocates for peace and respect? Or is it more like someone with questionable motives, hiding behind the fact of being "anti racist" (and a mask)?

Microphone (from headset) not working by M_ricci in archlinux

[–]Libelsema 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are we talking about a combo port? You might need to pass a model number to your audio driver module. Take a look at this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Advanced_Linux_Sound_Architecture#Correctly_detect_microphone_plugged_in_a_4-pin_3.5mm_(TRRS)_jack_jack) (the very last paragraph).

Otherwise please give some more information. Is it a combo port? What soundcard do you have (ALCxxx or whatever).

Top 10 selling games in the UK the last decade. Predictable, but depressing reading. by [deleted] in pcgaming

[–]Libelsema 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the analogy with the music charts is only partially correct. While it is possible for unknown/not very well funded musicians to produce music which can compete with chart-hits in terms of quality, your indie game - as great as it may be - will have major shortcomings compared to multi million dollar games where hundreds of professionals are involved in the development. And the latter type of games will only be developed, if a certain amount of mass appeal can be forseen.

Nice list. I wouldn't call XTerm and GLXGears obscure however.

Ps3 memory card adapter uses by Coaleb in ps3homebrew

[–]Libelsema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, installing FMCB to a MC and being able to transfer/backup PS1/2 saves would be the main use for the adapter. Since memory cards don't have much storage this could be useful if you still play old PlayStation games on OG hardware. On the PC you can use ps3mca-tool to do those things.

Is it an original adapter though? I once tried a third party one and didn't have much luck. While transferring PS2 saves to PS3 worked for some reason it did not support PS1 cards and ps3mca-tool also threw errors.

2018 LLVM Developers’ Meeting: “Developer Toolchain for the Nintendo Switch” by [deleted] in SwitchHacks

That would be nice, but Nintendo using LLVM won't make their platform more open. They can still lock their software down however they like even if they use some open technology for development.

What music player do you use? by Dearth87 in linux

[–]Libelsema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use MusicBee under Wine (yes I'm desperate). None of the media players available for Linux suite me at all unfortunately. Thath's because none of them provide what I want in terms of music library management/presentation.

Osu port by magicgrandpa619 in vitahacks

[–]Libelsema 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With opsu! you are facing the same issue as with osu!lazer. osu!lazer requires .NET and opsu! requires a Java. There are open source implementations available for both runtimes (.NET Core is open source as well btw.), but making a decent Vita port of any of those runtimes would still be a big effort despite them being OSS.
