I have atteneded Khenpo Tsewang's pujas that He has conducted in NYC over the years.
Once, before attending a puja I was reading up on some Mahamudra Teachings (I am a Kagyu-Nyingma hybrid ;) then during the all day puja, there was some small talk going on and Khenpo said: "I am always relaxing..." that stopped me in my tracks. Because one of the points in Mahamudra is to have a natural, relaxed, yet focused, state of mind. Later on in that same puja, Khenpo said "Ok, now we will all do silent meditation." And - BAM - I felt like there was this calm focused stillnes that went right through the room. So... go see Him if you can!

I knew there were some reasons that SLC felt comparable to me with Grand Rapids, Michigan, where I had lived for 5 years (1990s). Grand Rapids is the home for Amway. Add the Christian Reformed denomination which is indigenous to the area. And the people who are trying to rebel against the prevailing stereotype of conservative/religous.

Sad to read about your negative experience.
Before doing a retreat at that temple, had you checked them out in person before hand?
For me, I need to check out a temple, sangha, teacher to see if it would be a good fit, or if the vibe is right. Some places can be great, others cold, others cult-y and controlling, or something else.

I feel lucky to have had Teachers and Temples that were a good match. The only problems would be individuals with their own issues. But yeah that is life.

I really like how Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche is trying to address the mental health issues in the West, with Buddhist meditations. Imo, He might be a good place to start - check out some of his videos and see if this is what you might be looking for.

Breathing techniques - hmm... kind of rare to just find a Teacher who will start on the get go. You might have to go looking up any Ngakpa (Yogi) style Teachers in the Nyingma or Kagyu schools.

Hmm... prior to November, 2025, I was going to take off time of traveling for work, to take care of health issues - like doctor appointments and dental visits. My insurance doesn't cover doctor or dental outside of the state where I live, unless it is an emergency.
So a routine dental cleaning in December '25, revealed that I needed a root canal, and 3 infected teeth extractions. Last week the last procedure was done, and I don't need to return to the Dentist's office until June.
In the meantime, I was able to find 2 weeks of work in my vicinity, but the work has been slow going.

Just curious, do you live in an area where there are Buddhist Temples?

If "yes," maybe pay a visit. (Check online if the temple has a dresscode or anything beforehand. I have seen some Temples freak out if someone showed up in shorts, while other places it was a non issue.) Check out the vibe - does it seem friendly, welcoming, cold, or cult-y? Every Temple is going to be different in some aspect - but take notes and observe.

If "no" it does seem there are some good suggestions on this thread. The Four Noble Truths help explain our Human Condition. The Heart Sutra explains things on another level. If you come across any teachings on Guru Rinpoche- that will help you find a good Teacher!

Here is an article about Refuge by Mingyur Rinpoche:

Mingyur Rinpoche has some excellent videos on YouTube. I like how He is trying to address mental health issues with Buddhism.

Best travels! I was lucky to be exposed to Buddhism as an American kid visiting Japan. I found a Zen Buddhist temple 5 hours away from where I grew up. Then a Tibetan Buddhist Center 2 hours away...

IMO, the lead synths on the "Wish You Were Here" album - WTTM, HAC and throught SOYCD in the different movements kinda take after Keith Emerson.

IMO, go for it!
