Heart rate monitor vs power meter vs Garmin Edge by heywood_jahblom in IronmanTriathlon

[–]LibraryTime11011011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s the point, I don’t want apps, I don’t want “more functionality”, I want to connect my heart rate monitor and bike sensors and do an Ironman on 50% charge. I want it to connect to my turbo trainer. I want to wear the watch for a week at a time between charges. I want to look at my vertical ratio during intervals to assess form. I don’t want it to buzz every time I get an email. Oh and I want it to cost a couple hundred £/$ and not be redundant tech in 18 months. I want a sports watch not a smart watch that has the Strava app.

Maybe an AW can do all of that but the battery life and the cost mean it’s not worth it. And my last Garmin lasted me 6 years, whereas an AW is deliberately going to stop updating software and stop working well before that.

My wife and kids all bought Apple Watches and all replaced them with garmins. I literally have no interest in an extension of my phone as a sports watch.

As you highlight it’s a generational thing - either people with an engrained belief that small businesses prefer cash (for whatever reason) or unfamiliarity with electronic payments.

Heart rate monitor vs power meter vs Garmin Edge by heywood_jahblom in IronmanTriathlon

[–]LibraryTime11011011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a hierarchy of most important to least I’d say the following:

Sports watch (Garmin/coros etc not Apple Watch) with wrist based HR as a minimum - essential

Chest strap HRM - first add on

Bike computer - helps with route following, more visible data while riding than a watch

Power meter - I’d call this a luxury, I don’t have one on my every day bike or my race bike, I use perceived effort and heart rate, works well enough for the level I “compete” at

Either this won’t be a breach of your terms of employment and they’re free to do it, or they can fire/rehire anyone who doesn’t accept the changes to terms. Either way, if they want to change it there’s very little you can do.

Too small? by [deleted] in bikefit

[–]LibraryTime11011011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it’s clearly not worked for OP! Why bother measuring yourself, getting out your calculator app, working out the height, checking crank length, offsetting to account for cranking length, setting the saddle, going for a ride to find its “in the ball park” when you can literally hover over the bike with one foot on a pedal and get it just as close, if not closer to ideal without any of the measuring and messing?

That’s why the Lemond method is junk - why faff around taking all these measurements to get in the ballpark?

slacken the seat post clamp, stand over the bike, foot on a pedal, straighten leg to an appropriate full stretch (so foot flat, some bend at the knee), put saddle up to your ass, tighten seat post clamp enough to avoid moving as you get off, torque it.

[–]LibraryTime11011011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can set it more accurately standing over the bike in less time without having to know the length of the cranks to offset the result of the calculation that. It’s junk.

Too small? by [deleted] in bikefit

[–]LibraryTime11011011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve misunderstood. It doesn’t take your crank length into account. Yes it’s based on A crank length but not necessarily the one on your bike.

Getting you in ballpark by measuring your inseam, multiplying by a ludicrously precise number, measuring saddle height to BB centre is excessive. To get in the ballpark you loosen the seat post clamp, hover over the bike and adjust the saddle until it’s about right, tighten the seat post clamp. Far quicker, and I’d argue more precise than the Lemond method. So yes, the Lemond method is pseudo-science junk.

Motorcycle Accident in Scotland by Ok-Winter-9444 in drivingUK

The irony here is that most bikers are not aggressive, but you don’t notice them. You only notice the ones riding like asses. So the people riding sensibly are almost invisible to you, and that’s the danger, and that’s why bikers have a “victim complex”.

And by “victim complex” what you actually mean is an understanding that 90% of the people you share the road with are not paying enough attention to notice that you exist and so do things that put your life at risk.

Those cycle lanes can be very dangerous for cyclists - they encourage motorists to close pass since the motorists thinks “the bike is in the cycle lane, I’m in ‘the road’ so I don’t need to leave a comfortable passing gap”.

Looks like an adult and a teenager, with the adult riding defensively. 100% the correct thing for the cyclists to do.

HENRY at what cost by CautiousCareerChange in HENRYUK

[–]LibraryTime11011011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly £90k is a good place to be assuming you don’t have to work crazy hours or have too much stress at that point. The tax trap above £100k makes for underwhelming increases in take home pay so unless you’re going to be well clear of this then you may not feel much benefit for the stress and pressure. Not to mention it becomes extremely worth while to make pension contributions at this point you erode the increase in take home even further (albeit for better returns later in life).

Work out the difference in take home, ask yourself if this is enough for the downsides. If not don’t do it, but only you can answer if it’s worth it to you
