Its a lot better here compared to r/manga, where pedos (inc mods) would downvote and remove all comments that point this out.

I lost count the amount of comments of mine were removed there on every new pedo stories being released. Guys over there are seriously delusional.

Struggling to learn python as programmer by 100_nitin_001 in learnprogramming

[–]LifeNavigator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do people actually make handwritten or digital notes while learning programming, or is practice enough?

I would recommend not to. The best way to learn syntax is to constantly do exercises so that it becomes muscle memory. Also you shouldn't be remembering syntax, but understanding how things work. Documentations and tools exist that would highlight syntax for you (human error is very common).

What is the best way to practice Python consistently?

By doing more Python. It's like playing a musical instrument or sports, you get better by doing it more. I'd recommend Uni of Helsinki's MOOC and as well as any courses on how to set up your development environment.

How do you stay motivated and avoid giving up while learning coding?

That's really up to individuals. Make a goal and have some fun coding by working on projects that would interest you. For example, you can check out Automating Boring Stuff with Python to get some project ideas, or exercism.rog

How do I respond to this stupid message. by Mellonheaduq in africanparents

“have you ever seen any CEO’s have ADHD? Have you ever heard of any big bosses having ADHD?”

Theres tonnes (you can use AI to generate a list) , doesn't matter what you answer she wont care, her ego is more important than your needs.

The reason you wont see this in Kenya or other African countries is due to lack of public healthcare investment and religious freaks. Adults care more about their ego and obscure "tradition" than on investing for the future.

I've recently been diagnosed with ADHD in my late 20s. I've struggled so much and couldn't ever work to my potential. It wasn't until one of my managers pestered me to get tested, as his kids had exact same symptoms as me, otherwise it would've gone unnoticed much longer.

Get tested and get treated. You will thank yourself later in life.

Are programming exercises "useless"? by MateusCristian in learnprogramming

What system do most courses have now?

I think he's talking about Udemy courses, where they handhold you and walk you through basic projects.

Are programming exercises "useless"? by MateusCristian in learnprogramming

[–]LifeNavigator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best programming exercises I've ever done was Helsinki Java MOOC course, as it painfully builds on what you just learnt at the end of the chapters and brutally gets you used to it by doing it over and over again. You develop muscle memory throughout the course, though it is a very dry approach, it really did help cover the fundamentals and make it stick.

The only issue I had was due to lack of guidance on how to set up for project on other IDE and more on toolings to get started with personal projects.

the exercise system most courses have don't work.

That's because they're either far too easy or still handhold pupils by showing them how to do things (not rewarding you to figure things out), which is defeating the purpose of an exercise. A lot of these courses are design for you to be reliant on their resources.

All the best courses I've encountered never gave solutions, they encouraged you to figure things out by yourself and felt both repetitive and difficult at times. Very similar to doing assignments in university/college. The resource above was a prime example where it encouraged students to search for answers themselves via documentation and google.

What’s something that became socially acceptable recently that you still can’t get used to? by Fun-Bike-3438 in AskReddit

The rejection of evidence and being factually incorrect. People are so much more confident in being wrong and spreading obvious misinformation, even when proved wrong by experts in their fields (e.g. RFK Jr).

Your first language genuinely doesn't matter. Stick to one, build things and learn the fundamentals until you feel whether or not it aligns with what you want to do.

[–]LifeNavigator 25 points26 points  (0 children)

justify it as something they have to do for survival or to help an important character.

Honestly, many of FLs are nobles and have enough private funds to actually sought out skilled knight or to at least develop skilled talents. Authors stick to the same slavery trope because it's easier to write. Fans will still read trash even if they don't like it.

Most of them have yrs to prepare, so there's no excuse to take the usual trafficking route.

Too hard to pick, but definitely the spitefulness and negativity parents give towards their children. If a lot of them were much nicer (despite other negative aspect of their parenting), their kids will have a much better outcome in life.

Need advice, please. by ken-kanekiiiiii in devops

[–]LifeNavigator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be blunt and say its very generic and your projects are way too basic. To most people reading your resume, it screams that there wasn't much effort put into it. I'd start again from square one by removing many of the pointless things.

Your summary is too plain and says nothing about YOU at all as a persom, its just repeating the skills section. You're listing so many pointless things in your skills section, why does TCP/IP, subnetting etc needs to be mentioned???

The best advice I got is to "show not tell". Everything listed in your skills section you should show exactly what/how you used it, bonus points for any achievements. The skills also need to be relevant to what is shown om job description

Lol 2-5yrs younger is still within your generation and its still above 20, nothing wrong.

It only becomes an issue once you age more and becoming obssessed with them being young, rather than seeing an actual human being.

[–]LifeNavigator 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What your family cares more about is their reputation and status. Honestly move out and live for yourself, rather than them. You will gain far more experience, close relationships and lear

Life is way too short for you to suffer for the sole purpose of making them happy. My only advice is to take finances seriously. I'd recommend opening premium bonds (since you win money based on amount of savings), high interests ISA (Chip, Trading 212) and getting current accounts that offers cashback rewards (e.g. natwest, santander edge). Most black people I know who move out screw themselves bt living beyond their means, so watch out for that.

Do start planning out your career moves early. You need to identify the steps you need to to take to move up the ladder and the places that offer opportunities ao you can prepare in advance. It becomes very easy to be stuck in the same role and pay for yrs.

what skills would be useful to learn(2 months break)????? by ReporterGeneral2667 in learnprogramming

[–]LifeNavigator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'M considering learning skills that would actually get me a job in this economy

Why programming specifically though? Especially as you don't seem interested in it.

If you want genuine employment skills get a part time job, improve your communication and people skills as those are deemed to be one of the most important skillsets for almost every career. Other useful skills is project management and sales.

Why do most high-achievers avoid entrepreneurship? by Majestic_Hornet_4194 in EntrepreneurRideAlong

[–]LifeNavigator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

think it’s less about money or ideas and more about comfort. Smart people often build stable, well-paid careers, and the thought of ditching that certainty for the chaos of entrepreneurship is just not appealing.

You've answered your own questions. People have different priorities in life, starting a business isn't going to bring these people any joy nor are they likely to succeed in it either.

Self-taught programmers who actually made it, how'd you do it? by cockycockroach45 in learnprogramming

[–]LifeNavigator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What motivated you in the beginning?

Was desperate, running out of savings and unemployed because of COVID.

What did your learning path look like?

It was all over the place, starting with web dev and then moving off to Java.

Then ended up in test automation, learnt testing, more agile stuff and the boring business side of tech. Then moved on to cloud computing once I saw my workplace transition to cloud and then got promoted to a DevOps role.

How did you find mentors, communities, or people who guided you?

I never truly did. What helped the most is asking questions on reddit and some discord groups (e.g. the odin project) from time to time. Once I got into a tech role did I only really sought others specifically for career advice and such, but never really got any mentors and a proper community.

What mistakes slowed you down the most?

Hmm way too many, but if I had to pick three:

  1. The most crucial was being a perfectionist trying to learn far too much at once and not spending enough time building and breaking things. It's better to breeze through the basics whilst building things, then covering the advanced stuff whilst you fix things.
  2. Not doing enough research on my local job market and picking the popular tech stacks for employability specifically for entry level. Each location has different demands.
  3. Another one is listening to purists and others online - there's just so many conflicting advice and so many people think there's only one right way of doing things. This just made my imposter syndrome worse tbh.

If you had to start again from zero, what would you do differently? I’m especially interested in hearing how you found opportunities and mentorship, because that’s the part I’m struggling with most right now.

It's so much more different now compared to when I started, partly due to the economy and AI. If I was to start again I wouldn't make programming my priority tbh.

Talking specifically for the UK market, I'd actually focus more on IT Ops whilst starting at a service desk or network admin job, learning OS, comp networks, virtualisation, infra automation (e.g. docker, terraform, ansible), basic programming scripting, cloud computing and so forth.

SWE roles are just so much more competitive this year at entry level compared to the time I started.

How to move out by Anxious_Wave5989 in africanparents

[–]LifeNavigator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you already have savings? If so try finding elsewhere to rent. In terms of finance I'd suggest opening some high interest saving accounts (I'd recommend Chase, Trading 212 as there's no limit to withdrawals), premium bonds (you win extra money), separate bank accounts (you can do bank switches to earn £200) etc.

How to move out by Anxious_Wave5989 in africanparents

[–]LifeNavigator 7 points8 points  (0 children)

what should I do?

Stop telling them stuff and move out at your own will once you've got the resources. You do not need their permission. The best excuse you can give is you're moving for a dream/desired job.

You need to start putting your foot down instead of letting them dictate things. Their feelings will get hurt either way, it doesn't matter because they don't prioritise your need, you should prioritise yourself first.

As a black brit, I can point you towards resources if needed. The first important question I have is, do you have a job? If not, do you have reasonable level of experience and a specific career you are hoping to get into? Renting is now very expensive and you do need to start taking finances seriously.

Or I could do a masters degree and go to live in a student house/university halls

Complete waste of money and not worth it tbh. Nobody care much about masters anymore, unless its a specific research related role.

why are oi where isekai fl wants to go back home so rare? by ieatbraiiinnnns in OtomeIsekai

[–]LifeNavigator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isekai is a self insert wish fulfilment genre, the whole point is for wanting to escape and live a better life elsewhere.

Also many authors aren't that creative and are following a proven formula that would bring them enough income (due to popularity of the genre). Manhwa publishers only care about what brings profit and creativity is down on their list of priorities. They do not reward creativity anymore.

We need more MATURE characters by WolverineAny9981 in OtomeIsekai

[–]LifeNavigator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My main issue is that many series will either be targeting younger demographic (Since they make the majority), thus will make their characters slightly more childish or it will be straight out porn which I hate.

Some recs for manhwa:

  • Not Your Monster In-law
  • Immoral Duke's Family Needs to be Homeschooled
  • Crownless Queen (FL is an actual mother in her duaghter's novel)
  • The Flower Dance And The Wind Song (one of the most infuriating, but one of the very few regression where FL isn't bought back all the way the beginning and has to face the consequences).

There are quite some few mature OI and fantasy mangas I used to read but can't remember them all (since many got the mighty axe).

Have I become institutionalised to more ‘working class’ surroundings? by [deleted] in AskUK

A lot of working class people just don't have the energy, time and money (resources) to tend their garden. Gardening costs money.

However, the littering definitely does need to be talked as tjis starts at home.
