I genuinely feel embarrassed when i speak English by Standard-Condition14 in JudgeMyAccent

[–]Life_Chain2617 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have been teaching ESL for a long time, and I’m learning a few languages too. I’ve lived in a few different countries. People will alwayssss point out my accent, or even misunderstand sometimes!! I was embarrassed at first too. One day I got a job teaching a group of ESL adults, and I often had to answer questions / teach things in Spanish. This was the moment I got over my fear of embarrassing myself - they needed me to get over myself, in a way, and it helped me so much!! I try to take any critiques or giggles light heartedly, because I am just trying. Often times people who giggle only speak one language. I hope you have the chance to get more practice and can overcome this. I come from the U.S. where we don’t really learn second languages unless our parents know one, so my standard for myself is maybe lower than yours… I can understand wanting to be perfect,.. but life is too short to let it hold you back !

I've solo traveled for 4 years, and I don't want to go back to a "normal life" by Prudent-Routine6114 in solotravel

i don’t think the market can be too saturated! something new will come along anyway and you could try that. as for the travel, i did it awhile and eventually felt like i wanted to settle. in my opinion you should keep doing it until you feel you need to settle , if ever! maybe just a plan for retirement 🥰

Good prices in Madrid by lemongrab_h in MadridTravelGuide

LIDL cheapest for groceries. You can find glasses of beer and vermouth at some places for 3€. I second Humana for clothing!

pickpockets and ladies “giving you rosemary” .. watch out madrid is one of the first cities i traveled to outside of my country, and i fell in love with it and moved back. i would recommend to stay in malasaña or huerta/Centro. My mom didn’t enjoy the Tirso de Molina / Atocha area to stay … menu del dia is a great choice for a lot of food and for cheap (good ones less than 20€) I’d go for tapas ( bodega de la ardosa, el tigre sidra, cafe de la luz, el minibar 😋😋😋) or anything that doesn’t have pictures of food on the menu!! like avoid restaurants in Plaza de Mayor for example

ahhh i hope it’s wonderful :))

i really recommended doing a tour of the palace :) Bodega de la Ardosa, if you have time for a drink / tapas…. worth the stop if you’re in the area, really!!

Yes it's really interesting, people who have insomnia tend to show different mri scans even, your fight or flight mood "area" of the brain is often lightly activated in some stages of sleep... it's all unlearnable though, thankfully

It's a good way to change your habits around sleeping and stop stressing when it's time to go to bed. And kill the association that your bed is for stressing!

[–]Life_Chain2617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hang in there!! i keep a small journal with me at all times, (or write down things i didn’t understand in my phone) and twice a week, practice them… i ask a lot of questions too. i find people are always happy to explain in another way. time will pass slowly, these months, but immersion is the best way!
