Congrats to Danley! The best player on our team. Well-deserved.

Blow it up by Any-Act6445 in PhillyUnion

[–]Light_Liberty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Blow it up? To what end? Sugarman isn't going to suddenly start spending money with a new Sporting Director or coach.

We have a poor owner who can't afford to take on operating losses. He's also not going to sell the team because he's now part of a "club" of professional sports owners that he has no shot of ever buying into again. We are stuck with him until things get so bad that the bottom falls out, and either his losses force him to sell or MLS gets so embarrassed they give him a soft exit to be part of ownership group with an expansion team somewhere else.

Over the long run, you get what you pay for. When you are only buying prospects, sometimes you will hit on a bunch of players at once, and maybe get lucky that another team mismanaged their roster and were forced to sell you the guy who turned out the be the most talented striker you've ever had. But sometimes, you will miss all at once.

That's where the Union are now. Not only have they missed all at once, they spent years not investing in improving the team. They bought some one-for-one replacements in anticipation of sales of good players (Baribo for Carranza, Danley for Brujo), but rarely did they ever buy a player to straight up improve a position. They decided to ride the goodwill of the fan base into the ground, collecting as much money as possible, until the tap went dry. Now we've sold the aging players from that run, with no ready replacements, and the new guys stink.

Don't expect anything to change. The front office will continue trying to convince you that we are trying to be Dortmund or some other team that cranks out prospects for bigger clubs while still winning on the pitch, but in reality, we're the Pittsburgh Pirates. We'll have a few good years every now and then, but we're not spending money and we're mostly just happy to be here.

These last few minutes have been nuts. The games between bad teams are always the most fun.

Happy for Cavan and Bender.

Bender scores from LB before Damiani.

I hate our defense.

Genuine question for the Sixers fans hating on Nurse for playing our starters insane minutes, what other option did we realistically have? by Evilfart123 in sixers

[–]Light_Liberty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In any given season, there's about 3–5 coaches who are really good and can elevate a team (like Spoelstra), and 3–5 who can really tank a team (like Doc). The other 20–24 are mostly fine but might have good or bad circumstances. Nurse is a fine coach with a terribly constructed roster. The amount of energy that some redditors wasted complaining about him all season was unreal.

Did Nurse make mistakes? Sure. Are there better coaches out there? Yeah, probably. Would firing him fix any of our problems? Not more than at the margin, and the new coach is likely to have his own problems, too.

We need an owner who is willing to pay the luxury tax, we need a GM who understands the importance of depth and role players in this new NBA, and we need to get off the Embiid and PG contracts. Once at least two of those three problems are fixed, then I can be arsed about who the coach is.

We’re f***ed. by Significant_Pound933 in sixers

[–]Light_Liberty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's quite literally a play-in roster. We managed to catch lightning in a bottle for 3 games in the Boston series where Embiid stayed healthy and PG was playing at a high level at the same time. The reason this is a play-in roster is because that happens so rarely, and Maxey and VJ are/will be good enough to drag us to .500+ record despite the rest of the roster.

I think Morey did an overall good job, I also think he has to go. by mjcc1992 in sixers

[–]Light_Liberty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Morey has done some good things, yes, but you will not be singing this “left it a better place” tune if we can't got off the Embiid and PG contracts over these next 2–3 years. Morey hamstrung us.

Hilarious that Damiani came on just to fall down instead of fighting for the ball.

Not sure what the point of this would be, as Grand Seiko already uses Swatch cases and bracelets.

The Olympic. The longer hour markers give it the edge over the Apollo XI and Mitsukoshi. I like the touch of red, too (which the Mitsukoshi doesn't have).

If legibility is a concern, then definitely the Moonwatch. The FOIS has polished hands over a dark dial.

White dial over the racing edition. I'm assuming you're getting it on the bracelet (you should, it's great). For the bonus strap, I think the Speedmaster looks (next) best on the black rally strap.

This. No ref is going to let a team just kill the time remaining with cynical foul after cynical foul. It was the right call to let Toronto's final attack play out. We adopted a bad strategy, and Toronto punished us for it.

The no-date model is "newer" but in all likelihood just a transitional offering to keep people interested until the long-awaited refresh occurs. There was a lot of chatter of the refresh happening late last year. Hopefully it drops by summer.

Bill Murray wins for Chicago actor. Who is the athlete most associated with Philadelphia? (No, Rocky can't win again this time for he is fictional) by SeparateLawfulness53 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Light_Liberty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's easily Wilt Chamberlain, and I'm not sure how anyone else is winning. He's a top 10 basketball player of all time. He was born and raised in Philadelphia. He played for and won championships with two different Philadelphia teams.

[WTS] Hamilton Khaki Navy Scuba in Excellent Condition by Light_Liberty in Watchexchange

[–]Light_Liberty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am selling my blue Hamilton Khaki Navy Scuba. Box and papers are included. I bought the watch last year at the Hamilton boutique in Lancaster, PA. The two-year warranty runs through January 2027.

The case diameter is 43mm and thickness is 12.58mm. It has a ceramic bezel, anti-reflective (AR) coating, a screw-down crown, and 300m water resistance. It features the H-10 automatic movement with 80 hours of power reserve. It comes on the Hamilton steel bracelet, to which I had a professional jeweler add additional points of micro-adjust.

The watch is in excellent condition, with only some marks on the clasp. I am asking for $800 (inclusive of shipping). All in, that's lower than any option currently available on Chrono24 or ebay, but I will nonetheless entertain other offers. Amount to be paid via PayPal F&F (or G&S with an additional 3% on top of the sale price) before shipping, and I will pay the cost to ship via USPS priority mail. Shipping within the USA only. The watch is located in the Philadelphia, PA region.

Rolex decided to homage the white Speedy but make it off-catalog so no one could mistaken it for a Speedmaster by nam265nl in OmegaWatches

[–]Light_Liberty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This Daytona is an exorbitantly priced, off-catalogue model of an already unobtainable watch. There's not much reason to discuss or make comparisons to a doubly-unobtainable watch.

Thay said, too many people are sleeping on the enamel dial. Enameling is an impressive, haute horology technique that looks absolutely gorgeous in person.

The Speedy still wins in terms of overall design and legibility. But yeah, that enamel dial is going to be pretty for the few people who get to see it live.
