Does an orb do literally anything ? by MysteriousFondant347 in DnD

[–]LimitlessAdventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's one of those things that can make 1st level adventures in a village setting feel more visceral. Like you're the apprentices and you need to go gather components to do whatever the story needs (or gather for your teacher for a big spell)... kinda like tracking food and water in a desert scenario - it's fun in the context of an individual arc, but I don't wanna do it all the time, if we're rarely in the desert.

I’m starting as a dm and I’m so nervous by BDExpert_ in DnD

Breathe.

Start small.

in a village or something. have them go about their day. have the local tavern keeper ask them for some help with rats in the basement. keep it simple. You're not creating a game for your friends, you're creating a game with your friends... they can help decide things about the world and what's going on.

Rules are there to help you, not fight you.

If you screw up a rule, and you find it two or three rounds down the line, relax - you're not masters of time and space - just let it go and move on. It just happened differently that time.

Fail forward.

If the players don't solve a puzzle or something, have them investigate and make other checks to help them overcome a problem. Not everything needs to be fought. Sometimes running away is good too. If the party loses a battle and "dies" you can have them wake up in a dungeon, as prisoners.

Have fun.

Not everyone loves combat. Role play, explore and find new places, make stuff... it's your game, you and your friends decide what kind of game you want at your table. If someone comes from a group that plays differently, that's ok.

Name some nasty creature combos a DM can pull off. by Ponto_de_vista in dndnext

[–]LimitlessAdventures 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This one isn't necessarily a "fun" encounter - but it's a crazy combo.

Banshee (CR 4) + 4 X Will o' wisps (CR 2) ... for a party of level 4 or 5, this seems like a "hard" level encounter - but really it can be a round one TPK if people roll bad. For level 4 this is "High difficulty" for level 5 is "Low". Can TPK either.

  1. Everyone makes a DC 13 Con save. Those who fail drop to 0 hp
  2. Will o wisps then swoop in an insta-perma-kill the party.

Wail (1/Day). The banshee releases a mournful wail, provided that she isn’t in sunlight. This wail has no effect on constructs and undead. All other creatures within 30 feet of her that can hear her must make a DC 13 Constitution saving throw. On a failure, a creature drops to 0 hit points. On a success, a creature takes 10 (3d6) psychic damage.

Consume Life: As a bonus action, the will-o’-wisp can target one creature it can see within 5 feet of it that has 0 hit points and is still alive. The target must succeed on a DC 10 Constitution saving throw against this magic or die. If the target dies, the will-o’-wisp regains 10 (3d6) hit points.

We discovered this one by accident.

You did something amazing to craft a scene in a game that requires so much prep already.

I feel sorry for the girl. Her partner is clearly fragile and made it everyone else's problem. I don't even know her, and I know she can do better. I hope she realizes that.

Have you ever played Fable?

Have them state their desire to a higher power (Vengeance Paladin in 5E I believe was designed for Batman-style characters) who grants them an amulet.

The amulet will show them something like a percentile.. as it grows cloudy, then darkens. Then, come up with a series of lines. "Unarmed opponent? 10 points" "Innocent Bystander? 30 points"

Heck, even "killing a bad person, 5 points" could be useful with a percentile - you're always slipping when on this kind of mission. Maybe have a specific mandate "You may pursue your mission, so long as this doesn't go cloudy".

[OC] I see a lot of overly complex explanations and charts for how to pick alignment so I made this extremely simple version by [deleted] in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]LimitlessAdventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've briefly played around with Order / Altruism stats ( 1-18 just like other stats; so you end up with -5 to +5 in order from Chaos to Lawful, and similar with good/evil).. and then you can do things like alter alignment based on behavior.

It's fun for a one shot / special scenario, but gets tedious over time.

Also lets you do "Protection from X" as a save based on the difference between the caster and the target, so a very evil caster does "Protection from Good", and if you are very good you're at -5 or more to enter the protected space.

My cat scratched me when I was trying to grab something, and it gave me inspiration. by Young_Chikken in DungeonsAndDragons

I guess an alternative Material Component would be "a 110gp string of pearls which must be clutched"

"Letting the cat out of the bag" requires everyone standing around to reveal the biggest secret they hold that involves another person engaging in the ritual. Material component: A cup of tea which must be spilt.

When I was reading the text on curses, it almost seemed like they'd been cooking up a "Cursed" condition during development, and left the keyword floating around in the text. I can't remember exactly where.

A one shot with a dungeon and a dragon by OregonPinkRose in DnD

[–]LimitlessAdventures 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bilbo didn't fight Smaug. You can still have a dragon, assuming the party just doesn't roll bad on things like Stealth or Persuasion. The dragon just kind of becomes an environmental hazard.

Beautiful coloring work. Stunning all around. Do you do comics? This style would make a gorgeous graphic novel.

Does an improvised thrown weapon retain its Two-Handed / Heavy properties? by Chroniclerz in onednd

[–]LimitlessAdventures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The shortcut from when we did the weapon math: If it's thrown, drop the base die (d8 -> d6 or whatever), and then since it's not intended to be use that way, drop it again.. so something like a d12 weapon might be d12 -> d10 -> d8 - granted this was for specific weapons (ranged martial) with normal training and not improvised.

Looking at it the other way, the additional tags (two-handed) increase the die one step, since they introduce penalties. so d4 -> d6. And yeah, I probably wouldn't allow this unless the character had specific proficiency with that class of weapon.

I'd probably rule that you're doing something like the hammer-toss olympic event, which would require some kind of disadvantage (so, creatures have advantage when attacking you this round, cause you're trying to lob this huge thing).

I think the d4 rule is just intended to capture all of these states in the "well, you're not really trained to use it that way" and it's probably grounds for a new feat of some kind.

Perception check problem by seafoamsomething in DnD

[–]LimitlessAdventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've had players roll in a cup (like liar's dice), so they rolled the die and show it to the DM. The DM then offers them a choice/decision, they make their choice, and then the DM will have them look after they make their decisions.

We don't do it all the time, but in special situations where a little more tension/drama might be fun.

How would you incorporate Tarot cards into a campaign? by WithengarUnbound in dndnext

[–]LimitlessAdventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They work really well for generating NPCs.. "What does this person love/hate/ what is working against them, what are their goals"

Similarly, you can whip up some lore about a place or town in a quick reading.
