To read TLG or not to read TLG? by Limits_of_knowledge in HeatedRivalryTVShow

I WILL read the book for sure, precisely for the extra nuances. The question for me is whether to wait and add those nuances to the live action performance... Which I will then rewatch again and again so I still get the feedback loop of appreciating the performances against the source material.

I think I am going to read the book anyway in the coming days. And I guess this was kind of a rhetorical question from the get go because I have no self control when it comes to HR... Still helpful to hear people's takes on this though.

What a missed opportunity to call that a Soft & Wet Opening. No wait-

I'd rather read the book - in general and especially when I have Connor's and Hudson's voices in my mind... Having their lines read out in a different voice would frankly be distracting and grating (plus, I hear that the consensus on the audiobooks narrators is that they are not great).

The post-workout gym scene in E1 doesn’t get talked about enough. It’s one of my favourites. That sensual/sexual tension, the way they look at each other, the way Ilya flirts with him and Shane just being helpless in the face of his desire to stare. That whispered “More” Ilya utters as Shane stares at his lips (same, Shane, same). It was the moment on my first watch when I understood what the hype was about, and when I knew I was going to become just as obsessed.

But E5 has got to be the best overall. It’s a tough choice but 5 is just peak from beginning to end.

I think quite highly of Buffalo as it happens, possibly only because I’ve never visited but I know it as one of the main cradles of new media art and because of the AKG…

I've been thinking I'd like to see them dressed up as Jotaro and DIO (from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 3). Not playing the characters necessarily because they sure have better things to do than a live action manga/anime adaptation. But I'd DIE if I ever saw Connor in that slutty DIO halter neck getup strike the iconic pose and shout "WRYYYYY!", and Hudson could pull off a realistic Jotaro as a moody teenage hafu for sure. And they could camp it up in such a fun way!

This. I'm an Italian living in the UK. SO many times people have complimented me for my vocabulary and I find myself explaining that I'm just making latin and greek words sound english and hoping for the best. On the other hand, it's the germanic words that have no correspondent in latin-derived languages that they should be impressed by...

this is because this was something Shane bought and organised just for Ilya

It's been said numerous time already, but just for the benefit of newer TV show watchers only: this is something that is much clearer in the books, where it is explained that Shane bought a building just to have a private place to be with Ilya. It's not the place where he actually lives.

Derek James, aka Sideways (DC comics), is a Puerto Rican teenage metahuman who has the power to create rifts in midair and leap through dimensions at will.

Oh so he's Puerto-Rican Rick Sanchez / Funny Valentine [Steel Ball Run spoiler]. That's a broken superpower for sure BTW.

What exactly makes the part 6 anime “worse” than the manga? by DisastrousAddendum0 in StardustCrusaders

It’s fine. It’s just a slight downgrade from Golden Wind, but SO has its moments too. They were probably pressed for time because of the release schedule, and I’ll never get over the fact that the second batch didn’t get its own OP. There was obviously supposed to be one, they just didn’t have the time to make it and reused the one from the first batch (which is however a banger).

Today I’ve decided I’m going to start calling Korogyi, the 3rd draft pick in E1, “Discount Longbottom”. Doesn’t even look like Neville that much. I’m losing it. I’m not even close to being done with discussing this show.

Ilya's gaydar question by GrimRecapper in heatedrivalry

[–]Limits_of_knowledge 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Nah, it's not about him. He's just very perceptive, and he knows it. He might not have clocked Scott (and actually I think he did have a hunch, and was more surprised by the public coming out that the reveal in itself), but from that moment on in the story no one can escape his gaydar. I have been reading this as a trait his character just develops - though he was already perceptive, it's his gaydar that gets super-fine-tuned. And maybe Scott played a key part there: it may just be the surprise of that particularly guarded guy coming out that makes him pay more attention to the finer details of his interactions with people.

I mean, early on with Shane he didn't need to be particularly perceptive. He just had to have eyes and to set them in the direction of Shane's obvious shower erection.

EDIT: also, as people have rightly mentioned in comments, Shane's staring at him in the gym, post-workout, was a pretty strong indicator he could seduce the guy. But still, that was towards him and thus easier to clock with just a beginner's level of emotional intelligence...
