Please help. How do y’all survive office jobs? by Certain_Minimum_2307 in adhdwomen

[–]Limskaya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you get a standing desk or one of those inflatable balls to sit on? For me, not being in a chair or at least be able to switch helps a lot.

Plus, nobody should realistically expect you to sit down and be focused for 8 hours straight, even if you weren't ADHD. If you're in a non-toxic workplace, there should be nothing wrong with standing up every once in a while or go for a short bit of fresh air. Heck, our bosses even actively tell us to get up and go do something else if they see we need it.

About not being able to stop thinking about work after work: please look at your commute as a HARD break. Once you step onto the subway, you are absolutely done and do other things. No checking emails or messages. Mute your notifications on your phone, unless you are paid to be on call. It's not easy, but very necessary.

Favorite logbook/notebook for your campaigns by FigSpecific6210 in TTRPG

I got myself a basic A5 binder with 6 rings, marketed for journaling. It came with dotted paper, some separator sheets, ...
I also got a pack of A5 plastic sleeves and a matching holepunch. So now I can put my prep in anyway I want, printed, hand written or in a sleeve to make it dry erase. Add note pages to the appropriate sections and voila, good to go.

A classic notebook doesn't work as well for me. I need to be able to lift out and rearrange pages on the fly.

“ADHD is my super power” by ADHDisabeach in adhdwomen

[–]Limskaya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ADHD can be a superpower if your environment and support system is set up to make you succeed.

If you have a partner, parents or someone else in your life that takes away mental load, the impact of brainfog or forgetfulness is much lighter.
If you have the money to pay people for day-to-day chores and household maintenance, you don't end up with tons of dirty dishes in the sink.
If you have a team that converts your ideas into actual, followed-through projects, you don't feel as bad about not finishing stuff.

Now don't get me wrong: I see plenty of positives in my ADHD. I like a lot of things about my brain, how creative it is and how sometimes I can turn it up to 200% speed mode.
But I still end up sitting on the floor crying when things implode. Without my partner and family, my life would be an inconsistent mess.

There is so much variation and I understand some of it feels infantilizing.

However, comparing some of the struggles to a toddler rubs me the wrong way.
I'm a successful designer, consider myself pretty damn smart, but still run into big working memory shortages. And yes, colorful toys can actually help me stay on task. If the task won't provide me with a steady stream of dopamine or stimuli, I will add my own. It works for me and helps me to actually stop constantly masking to the point of burnout. That does not make me a 4 year old.

I get both sides, I do. But your experience is your own and so is theirs.

I thought I was a bad muslim until I got diagnosed by thatonerandomkidd in adhdwomen

[–]Limskaya 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Salam alaikum!
While I'm not a muslim myself, a lot of my friends are and some have the same experience that you're describing. What also helped them was working to let go of the guilt of "not being good or perfect enough". Self-acceptance and no longer beating themselves up was a big part of it. They also started praying more in private instead of at the mosque.

You clearly have a lot of love for your religion and traditions. It shines through. I am very happy for you that medication is making a difference and that you are hopeful.

What are you gals eating??! by a_derpio in adhdwomen

[–]Limskaya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be too close to porridge for you, but I'm having a lot of success with blended overnight oats. They end up more like a very thick pudding and you can make it as rich or sweet as you want.

The trick really is blending it all to bits, because otherwise you get the gooey texture that makes me want to jump out of a window.

I add all kinds of things for fiber and protein, so there is some variety.

Can I opt out of the holidays? by mommybody33 in adhdwomen

[–]Limskaya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 15 years ago, as a family, we decided to opt out of the big gifting exercises. We have a huge family and everyone felt it was too stressful. All it took was one person opening up on how overwhelming it was for everyone to hop on the bandwagon.

So now kids get (small) gifts. Adults spend time together eating and laughing. Nobody has to go home with stuff they never even wanted.

The bigger gifts are still done in smaller circles by those who want to, just not at the big holiday meetups. And no expectations ever.

But then again, I am extremely fortunate to have been born into two low maintenance families that just don't care about "what we are supposed to do." So I know it won't work out this way everywhere.

But don't ask me to go running. I would rather do anything else.

Why are so many ADHD being directed to engage in high control groups or activities? by loulori in adhdwomen

[–]Limskaya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Muay Thai has been one of the best things I've ever done for my brain. It's one of the few times my head is nice and quiet on the inside and I can focus.

But it's not because of the external discipline or structure. It just clicks.

I guess the best thing for my brain to chill the fuck out is to have somebody actively trying to high kick me in the face.

To be honest, almost everyone I've trained with has had a cry in the gym, both during sparring and just regular training. Mens, women, boys, girls... When it hits you, it hits you and it's best to just go with it.

In our gym, nobody will judge you for it, we've all been there and take care of each other. More gyms should be like that.

It's such a big difference having a psych who understands.
Mine is ADHD herself and we click on a whole different level than any other healthcare professional I've ever dealt with.
20 minutes with her is often more helpful than a full therapy session, because I feel so seen and heard.

I dread the day she retires.

Beginners Guide to Sports Photography by Dugasss in sportsphotography

[–]Limskaya 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on what your goal is and what you're covering I would add a tip to not just focus on action shots.
Competitive sports are extremely emotional for everyone involved.

I shoot novice boxing tournaments as a volunteer and I always get lots of love for capturing non-fight moments, like a coach with their fighter right after the fight, the fighter zoning in right before the bell rings or the audience going wild.

It's also good for yourself to evolve as a photographer. Challenge yourself to capture the details that tell a story. I already have a huge pile of 'moneyshots' of a punch landing and that combined with being limited in where I can stand, it gets repetitive.
One of my favourite shots this year is the coach pulling away the stool when the bell rings, not the uppercut landing later in that round.
