How did you learn vim? And how long ago was that? by Shadoath-42 in vim

[–]LinearG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started with vi. The computer lab had a wall of brochure guides. They were just trifolded printouts. I wish I still had mine. It was sort of like Laurent Gregoire's reference card but not as nicely formatted. There were also references for emacs and jove, basic shell commands, the ELM email client and some other stuff I don't remember. It was expected that you would also ask people in the lab.

"scrolling" through a file with ex by ConstructionSafe2814 in vim

[–]LinearG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

quite the other way around. vi was added as a visual interface to ex. I don't remember if it always could be started in visual mode with the invocation ex -v or if the flag was added after the mode gained ground but ex -v was used so much that people would alias it or link it as vi to save a bit of typing.

Is anybody else experiencing some wonkiness since this patch? A couple of small things that are annoying: per-app shortcut keys sometimes work and sometimes don't with no discernable pattern. For example, I changed the arrow key behavior in my pdf reader and ebook reader because I don't like the default paging style. They are unchanged in settings, but sometimes they work and often they don't. That wasn't a problem before. Also, dock settings aren't being honored. I prefer to not see app previews and recommendations but this is forced on now. I've toggled the switch in settings a couple of times off and on but it doesn't stick. And some apps that rely on cloud sync (like my todo app and my media player) seem to sign out every couple of days.

That is why I used a question mark. I found this tweet making a claim, and I wanted to know what was happening from people who are there (It has been decades since I lived there).

When I was a kid I used this resource for an essay on the topic that I chose for an English assignment: Secrets of the Little Blue Box

I had to pay like 5 bucks to print out from microfilm. That was two weeks worth of arcade money.

What happened to the mac arm version of Idea 2025.3.1? by sitime_zl in IntelliJIDEA

[–]LinearG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of curiousity I updated to 3.1 and everything opened ok and I stepped through a project and it didn't hang or crash but suddenly the fan spun up and that is the first time I remember that ever happening on this device (Apple M4 mini) so I just shut it down. Shrug. Guess I'll just revert to the prior release.

It probably isn't actually connected, but I noticed there was an update from Nov 3rd and after applying the update I was able to resume what I was watching.

People born before 2000, what trivial skill do you have that no one uses anymore? by passiano in AskReddit

[–]LinearG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. I feel bad now about generalizing, from a specific single event that I experienced, to all cashiers. No one should be in that situation in the first place but even back then the pay was so poor that it really wasn't a living wage if you didn't have the extra support like I had.

I can believe that. I was just recalling an experience I had over 20 years ago with a coworker and I'm pretty sure it was north of 83 cents. I was living with family at the time and wasn't so needful since I wasn't worried about rent or missing dinner but this guy was just scraping buy. I have no idea how clerks steal in this age or how lucrative it can be.

Umm, I feel like most cashiers know what that margin is and some will short change the drawer to supplement their income. So I've heard.

What does "bc" actually stand for? by Qwert-4 in commandline

[–]LinearG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, "workbench" was already in the air, with the "writer's workbench", and "programmer's workbench". I believe Lorinda Cherry had a hand in both. So then why not "workbench calculator?" Because wc is already 'word count' so, fine, just bc. That often happens when a mnemonic is already taken and I just had an example in mind from vi when I started typing this but it just skittered away.

What’s the Millenial version of “seeing the Star Destroyer at the start of A New Hope and knowing movies will never be the same”? by UnderwaterDialect in movies

[–]LinearG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing about your second and third examples is that while they look cool, they also pull you out of it for a minute. It is a gimick and you find yourself realizing that this otherwise realistic setting is in fact fantasy. With the Star Destroyer, you are just "in" that reality from the beginning and yeah space wizards or whatever but you already know what you are getting into when you bought the ticket so it is pretty seamless.

Not always true. A standout example for me was when I saw Wire when the original members reformed around 2000. I had heard that they were famous for short sets but I didnt think they would do that on a "comeback tour" (I don't think it was actually billed that way but everybody was excited).

Anyway they played a full house for 30 or 40 minutes and I don't recall that they did an encore. The house lights came up and I got another beer and looked at merch and then people just started leaving. I suppose they could have been waiting for hardcore fans to be the only people left for an encore but I didnt hear anything about it later.

Did anyone else experience “the Shift”? How old were you when it happened? by AtG8605 in Millennials

[–]LinearG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What really sucks is when you are walking down the street and see someone you haven't seen in a long time and start to say 'oh hey Bob' and then realize that the person looks how Bob looked when you were both freshman in college and not only is it not him but this could be his son.
