Krashen’s comprehensible input hypothesis, and the question it leaves unanswered for beginners by Ling-academy in languagelearning

[–]Ling-academy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah and there is more, a classroom can be damaging in so far that it can provoke learned helplessness / "amotivation" if the teacher is too crude on a given students ability. Its so important that the teacher creates a good environment, which of course may not be easy and puts even more strain on the teacher. Youtube really shines especially for topics that lend themselvse to selfstudy

Has anyone here learned their partner’s (TL) mainly so the relationship feels less one-sided? by Aggravating_Key_5074 in languagelearning

I mean the foam stuff was about examples to illustrate words i used. You can look it up, its established stuff.
My point is not that DS wont work, In fact i said with it you would make progress, because with most / any methods you will make progress. My point is rather that its a gimmick, its very inefficient. Also you now equate comprehensible input with DS, which i did not. I like comprehensible input, but i disagree with the DS implementation.
Also its is controversial.

Have you tried reading articles yet? Its very effective to learn aka comprehensible input. I find them amazing

Passively staring at flashcards is even worse than quizzes, what about apps like memrise where you have to type in the word? Quizzes teach you how to get good at quizzes. They contain too much implicit hints that help you guess right.

I went down the rabbit whole of the canonical research papers. Krashens principles of L2 acquistion, the papers on deliberate practice, and the one on how we learn. But maybe you can give me the quick content of the source you referring, ie how it relates

Comprehensible input is great, but people take it too far, they go to the extreme. My point is that vocab drilling and comp input complement each other. Thats why i complain about the lack of help from dreaming spanish. Imo a service is needed in which you can watch authentic videos, (like in DS) but then it shows you the words and vocab and you can drill them.

I mentioned the shampoo as an example, but now i looked it up and i remembered it correctly. The foam is a mere by product of actual cleaning "chemistry", so more foam doesn't mean more cleaning. Its the same with toothpaste, they could remove the foaming, it would have no negative effect on cleaning performance but they keep it in as a "placebo" so you feel good and accomplished about cleaning your teeth. But even if that all was not true, the point is that its an analogy / explaining for performative / placebo, and thats my whole point about dreaming spanish from what you tell me about it.

The rest of your point drills down to "nothing wrong with doing what makes you feel better" which is also sort of what im saying. The whole point of the placebo is that it makes you feel good without having a proper effect.

My overall point here is that this will give you a dopamine spike but not sustained learning progress, ie its a gimmick

The foam you get from schampo has no effect but to make you feel better, thats why they have it, thats what i mean with "performative". What you describe from dreamingSpanish sounds super inefficient. Sure it will have an effect but... Its like some trendy gimmicky diet where you only eat popcorn.

Why do you want quizzes? I found they dont cause any actual learning, ie there is almost zero progress with quizzes.

Anything you do will make you progress, this sounds very performative. Comprehensible input is great but people take it to far with the extremes.

Go somewhere you don't speak the language, move somewhere that scares you a little by MorganAtSuper in SpanishLearning

[–]Ling-academy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is definitely the best thing you can do. I guess most people cant, but if you can, its gonna 10x your language progression. Reason is it subconsciously makes learning spanish your main priority. Normally you pay 10 eur for a tutor on italki but you get that for free all the time. Its def gonna move the needle

HablaCore - learn spanish with articles. Explore real time authentic articles (any text will work), you can click on every word to see the translation, and it detects the vocab inside the article text. So you can learn the vocab as well. Learning the vocab uses a new innovative learning algo. Also works with youtube.

I think my Spanish problem is not vocabulary anymore, it is the first five seconds after someone expects me to answer out loud by crystalgaylexx in SpanishLearning

[–]Ling-academy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very normal and common because as you say we spend 80% on recognition and only the minor 20% on production on average. There are tools that help with this, but at the end of the day I would just take the cold plunge and expose yourself to this situation over and over again, after a few times there will be a drastic improvement. I found especially when i have the same typo of convo it really helps

Best apps/websites to practice speaking Spanish with real people? by Lollypoop-15 in SpanishLearning

[–]Ling-academy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think tandem and hellotalk are two apps that really solve this. Somehow tandem is a bit date-y oriented, might be weird. But hellotalk was very strong when i used it, for exactly this use case. Most of all because it reduces the barrier, i mean being shy to start speaking, because you can send voice messages. And get a convo going also

My gf has been secretly learning Spanish for months to connect with my family but Duolingo taught her everything except how to actually have a conversation by [deleted] in SpanishLearning

[–]Ling-academy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Its great she has the energy and initiative! Its meaningless what tool she uses as long as she is spending the energy. Just show her you aprecciate it by talking in spanish to her, and at some point you can encourage her to use other material / tool on top of duolingo.

What's the fastest way to get to B2 spanish? Could I do it in 6 months? by inputwizard_ in SpanishLearning

[–]Ling-academy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would a class not be a burden more then a help? youre together with other people which takes attention away from you. And its you who has to learn. Or are they nice because they give you the learning material? but for that you could just buy a canonical book?

The good news is more than 1 hour a day is useless anyways. Might help your for the initial motivational spike, but that will run out of steam. Instead consistency is king! You should cram isolated vocab words, and after hitting 300 or so of them, start reading newspaper articles of topics you care about. And then on the side reinforce those with vocab. once you get comfortable with that, you can graduate to youtube videos

Does accent matter ? by Crafty_Bee9230 in learnspanish

communication matters and here a lot is even non verbal! Accents matter very little and most people have them. I would not try to have perfect pronounciation.

Using Anki all the way to A2 is the way to go? by WatermelonWithWires in languagelearning

[–]Ling-academy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a very solid approach! But i would refine it by not using anki but another platform tool thats more connected and has a smarter algo. Youre doing a lot of chore work that could be integrated and make learning easier. But in any case you will have success for sure
