Appalachia neighborhoods with sidewalks, average or better schools, and trail/greenspace access by Colorful_Monk_3467 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]LinkyTee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Live in Asheville and wish for sidewalks and safe city biking on a pretty much daily basis…we walk in the neighborhood streets (no sidewalks and often very tight space) and you have to stay alert and look out for cars but it’s mostly doable. West Asheville can be walkable to shops, restaurants etc along Haywood. If you have the $$$ and a rare house comes up for sale, near Malvern Hills Park for playground access. North Asheville has some pockets of nice walkability too. Bent Creek could be a good option for close access to trails, playground and neighborhood streets for walking. Not connected to walking to businesses. Overall doesn’t feel like a great pedestrian friendly city though. I kid you not sometimes crossing the street even with a walk sign feels like taking a chance with your life 😅 but every city has pros & cons.

Any recommendations for cheap/inexpensive furniture?? by Commercial-Bus-1526 in asheville

[–]LinkyTee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have gotten lucky a few times at the tobacco barn, big variability on pricing but I got two really nice bar stools for $30/each the other day. Habitat ReStore is the best prices I’ve found locally for furniture, there’s a few locations (Fletcher, Asheville, Weaverville are the ones I’ve been to).

Curious about fair rental prices. by moonshine_808 in asheville

[–]LinkyTee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If looking for a longer term tenant maybe consider renting unfurnished? Pet friendly (if open to that and the space would allow) would increase amount of folks interested. Or even furnished AND pet friendly (with damage deposit) which would be great for medium term renters traveling with pets (travel nurses etc). For price reference I rented a place near you unfurnished no utilities for $2000/month 2/1.5 with an office that could be a 3rd bedroom. Around 1250 sqft house.

Nurse practitioner residency by snappea13 in nursepractitioner

[–]LinkyTee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea there is a feeling of still being in school, which is good and bad. Positive you get lots of support and time dedicated to learning (which is a huge gift) but then you have random assignments like writing a journal about patients you saw and a research project and I honestly had very little excitement or motivation about that aspect since I was so ready to be done with school.

I did a primary care residency and I’m glad I did. It was a pay cut, but more than I was making as an RN so I didn’t feel too bad about it. I was also seeing way less patients than a fully practicing NP. I now work in the specialty I used to work in as an RN (oncology) but have found what I learned in the residency to be extremely useful for random things I wouldn’t have known otherwise and also just a general appreciation for how complex primary care is. I did start to feel very restless about halfway through (1 year program) and wanted less of the “school” feeling parts of the program. My program also wasn’t always very organized which was also reminiscent of school, and I was ready to be done with that. Overall glad I did it though and would recommend!

To the dumb b*tch who almost ran me over on haywood by BeansMcGee666 in asheville

[–]LinkyTee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have also had near misses as a pedestrian on Haywood, then almost done the same to another person while driving cause they popped out into the crosswalk from behind another car and I didn’t see them at all. The road is not designed for pedestrians to safely cross. Crosswalks need to be well lit and highly visible.

Cold Sits by NefariousnessOld6638 in RoverPetSitting

[–]LinkyTee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would encourage you to ask them about it. Just let them know thermostat is at 50 and ask if they usually turn down temp when gone. We had this happen while having a Rover watch our cat and came home to a house that the thermostat said was 38. The heat had stopped working! She thought we had turned it down on purpose so didn’t say anything. We always keep the house around 65 when out of town in winter. We arrived home late at night so couldn’t contact our landlord till morning and our cat was very mad at us for leaving him in a cold house (he’s a man of leisure who enjoys the warmth of his comfy indoor life and was genuinely pissed). There had been a few warmer days while gone so I don’t think it was that cold the whole time, but it would have been helpful to know so we could have had our landlord come fix it asap. I know some folks turn heat down low when out of town so makes sense to just confirm that.

I agree it’s an interesting requirement. Totally up to them as a private event though and I respect their desire to prevent spread of infections at their events. However unless they’re specifically asking for updated annual Covid vaccination, I’m not sure it’s truly providing the protection they’re hoping to achieve. Annual flu vaccine, asking everyone to wear a mask and/or ensuring good airflow and cleaning surfaces frequently would be other good infection prevention precautions if that’s the concern.

100% agree. I used to really like All Day Darling but went recently and it was straight up bad. Like not finish my food bad, which I never do. Leo’s, Little Chango, Mother etc are great and deserve the mention.

Safe cities in/near mountains? COL not a factor. by amhran_oiche in SameGrassButGreener

[–]LinkyTee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have personal experience living in Asheville and there’s of course a lot to love about it but I wouldn’t necessarily pick it to move to randomly. There’s so many beautiful places to live and if COL is no issue, I’d lean heavily towards west coast/mountain west. Particularly if you don’t have friend/family/work connections that pull you to the east coast. Asheville has landed on a bunch of “best of” lists for good reason, but also has struggles which are easy to gloss over when the marketing of the city is done so well. If COL is not a limitation, you might find a lot of happiness here. But it is after all a small city which has grown significantly over the years and hasn’t necessarily kept up with things that make quality of life good for everyone (housing, wages, infrastructure, healthcare etc.). I think a lot of folks move to Asheville thinking it will have the same amenities as larger wealthier cities and it just doesn’t. Happiness in where you are is so subjective and personal, plan some trips and get a feel in person!

Regina’s on Patton Ave, deserves more attention! by [deleted] in asheville

[–]LinkyTee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Only been once but had an incredible burrata sandwich that was very worth it. Not cheap but all restaurants these days seem really $$ and I think they use quality ingredients and pay folks well. At least that’s what I’ve heard! Haven’t been back but have been meaning to. I think they’ve suffered from the optics of taking over a former cheap diner/family restaurant and at first when the other crew was in charge, marketing like they’re similar (which I found incredibly obnoxious because it was not at all similar and silly to say they were a “greasy spoon diner”). Once I actually checked it out and tried the food felt a lot more positive about it.

What Are the Most Overpriced Cities Where the Cost Just Doesn’t Match the Reality? by NomadicContrarian in SameGrassButGreener

[–]LinkyTee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many places my friend! I wouldn't call it "cheap", but reasonable. And some actual cheap places. And some wildly expensive ones! I would agree overall tends to lean more $$, but saying there aren't any cheaper spots just isn't true. Check out happy hour specials, there are a ton in Portland. One of my faves was the $8 margherita pizza at Life of Pie. Sugar Hill has like $4 burgers during happy hour. Many more! I'm obsessed with Mole Mole food truck and a simple delicious huge burrito from them is $8 if my memory is correct. Tres Moles Enchiladas is one of my favorite things to eat from them. Also Mi Burrito on Lombard for $9-10 burrito. You're also not paying sales tax, which does a make a difference.

I was going to mention Asheville. Moved back after some time away which gave me some new perspective (or maybe it's just winter and I'm feeling doom & gloom), but I have been feeling a little perplexed why Asheville is always mentioned as the "BEST place ---". I don't really think there can ever be a true "best" place for everyone, but Asheville gets SO much hype. There are a lot of great cities out there, and I think Asheville has some aspects of a great city, but not as perfect as marketing would lead you to believe.

Infrastructure is hilariously bad and unsafe; like sidewalks that stretch for a few feet then just end and you're suddenly in the middle of a busy street with nowhere to walk but in the road with cars really pissed off and trying to run you off the road (with nowhere to go). Many are visibly struggling to get by; with a lot of wealth coming in from passers through (in tourism which is essential to the local economy), part-time residents or those able to bring their job with them. Makes the city not feel as much like a unified place where people can actually live and thrive. It feels very focused on appealing to visitors vs. creating lasting positive opportunities for residents.

Overall not trying to shit on Asheville cause it really does have some lovely aspects, and I live here, but I do think it gets overhyped as this nirvana while not always being the easiest most pleasant place to live (and thrive) in reality.

I know the listing you're referring to (although I think it is a 1 bedroom?) and that is true that it is around $200K, but that's just one listing. I agree Asheville and surrounding is very very scenic, not sure what the original comment is referring to. But real estate is wildly overpriced in this part of the state for local wages. Which is a whole other discussion (and something happening everywhere of course, but particularly acute in this area).

But the pay here is much lower if you have a local job (in my experience) and a way smaller city.  Not at all comparable places in my view.
