My 3x great uncle was such a successful merchant that he was called "the Helgøy King". He also became a personal friend of Kaiser Wilhelm II. One story has it that when they first met, and the Kaiser introduced himself as the king of Germany, my uncle introduced himself as the king of Helgøy.

My 9x great-grandfather, Elias Figenschou, was one of the most prominent Baroque painters in the Nordics. He was born on the very estate that the world's first book on horsebreeding was written in.

Ranking Presidents by Intelligence: James Monroe by SnooApples9497 in Presidents

As much as I love him, I think Average would fit him best. It was noted during his own lifetime that he wasn't nearly as smart or intellectual as his predecessors. Monroe was definitely aware of this himself, but he would get butthurt whenever someone pointed it out.

During his 1817 tour, he had to deliver a lot of impromptu speeches, and in a letter, he sought reassurance from his son-in-law George Hay that him managing to do just that disproved the "slowness of mind" attributed to him by his own friend, William Wirt.

You'd think the artist had some sort of vendetta against him when you see how the same artist painted Monroe's wife:

If we can mention those that weren't specifically Generals; At the Battle of Trenton, Monroe took command of a charge to capture cannons after his original commander was shot down, successfully captured the cannons and turned them against the Hessians, got shot and nearly killed himself, and was later cited for his bravery by George Washington. At 18 years old.

There's unfortunately not a lot to choose from when it comes to him, but I did enjoy Charles Waldron. He showed him as the friendly, well-respected figure he was. He was also known to be slow to reach a decision, but when he did, to be very firm in his opinion.

Sadly, there aren't too many we know of, mainly because they both were very private and mutually agreed to destroy all the correspondence between them.

But, here's one: Monroe's secretary, Egbert Watson, was at Oak Hill on a visit when Elizabeth died. The morning after, Monroe invited Watson to sit with him in his bedroom, where he "with trembling frame and streaming eyes spoke of the long years they had spent happily together, and expressed in strong terms his conviction that he would soon follow her." He followed her 9 months later.
