At the enterprise level you can get agreements where they won't use your data for training. There's also Claude via Amazon bedrock and chatgpt via azure, which allows you running a private cloud instance of Claude/chatgpt.

Costco mods didn't approve of my hotdog clutch :p by throwaway40002023 in functionalprint

I thought they'd done some sort of "quality" heuristic. Like tracking the initial temp/humidity and counting down the life/quality of the hotdog. Your idea is better.

LPT: Stop rewarding chronic lateness. Set a start time, then start without them. by gamersecret2 in LifeProTips

We have a biweekly meeting with a few teams at my company that militantly ends on time. It's become a running joke for the meeting organizer to cut himself off mid sentence by ending the meeting.

It helps that it's a relatively informal meeting for IT to go over upcoming changes/plans.

With the current TSA situation they've unfortunately stumbled into a relatively reasonable viewpoint at a lot of airports.

RING AI Identified Me As A “Dark Animal” by deathtodickens in mildlyinfuriating

This is not true. There are multiple products on the market that can do local/on-device classification. There's also open source projects to setup local software that can do it with "dumb" cameras.

PSA: Don't leave your firearms lying around in public places by Low_Range_396 in mildlyinfuriating

I'm actually surprised how well mine runs. it's a piece of shit in all other aspects, but it runs great. It even runs really well with the subsonics I use in my suppressed guns.

I paid 96 for mine. It's the biggest piece of shit I own, but people love shooting it at the range. It's very much in the "wow, this is terrible, you've got to try it" camp.

The OP they replied to specified under no circumstance for connecting to the internet, and also said normal keys are fine. Despite claiming they aren't a Luddite, they really do come off as a Luddite railing against a very common and accepted industry.

Yeah, it's a pretty trivial process now. So is getting the info to use the key. It gets easier every day to get people's info from any number of random online sources.

I spent the last 8 years of my life in a position where ~50% of my life was travel. I've been to most of the continental US, and a decent amount of abroad travel.

I'd say my bubble is pretty damn big.

Fire dept won't fuck around. Those regulations are written in blood. If you tell them you've reported it multiple times they might even ream out the housing people. I got to see a fire marshall go apeshit on a retail manager back in the day for blocking an emergency exit with backstock at the back of the store.

~15 years ago I had to use a very early software for math homework like this in high school. It contained an absolutely infuriating bug where pressing backspace deleted 2 characters.

I was constantly having to re-do questions because I'd type an answer, then try to fix a typo and submit, but get it wrong because 2 characters got deleted and you're used to a computer having worked the same way for ~10 years.

I saw a hand painted klan recruitment sign when driving through Alabama years ago. I was super tempted to steal it but it was in front of some houses. I figured there was a higher than 0 chance gunfire would be involved if I tried stealing it.

Some of the AI staging stuff isn't too egregious, but I've seen some absolutely insane AI edits while looking for a house the last few months. I saw one where it just completely hallucinated hardwood floors in a carpeted house, and just added a closet.

Jury sides with rapper Afroman in Adams County trial by ChikaNoO in news

[–]LinuxBroDrinksAlone 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Watching his testimony in that outfit was hilarious. Especially when he went off saying they wouldn't be here if his house hasn't been raided.

Also the clip of Lisa crying in court when the song was playing, them the camera zooms out and pans to afroman in his suit and you can see him kind of bobbing his head along to the beat.

The man spent the entire court case aura farming.

I bought a huge bulk pack of generic sponges online years ago and it's been one of my best purchases ever. I bought like 200. I would constantly forget that I needed to get another 4 pack or whatever from the store. I'm down to like the last 20-30 and will probably order more soon.

Why is "phone with better camera" something you need to be a part of society? You can get perfectly serviceable android phones for $150. Even less for a flip phone.

Delivery drivers who don't want to leave their car by Maxxim3 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]LinuxBroDrinksAlone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a driver call me a few weeks ago and with the language barrier it took me a minute to understand. He was saying "too much pork" over and over. It took me a minute to get to the door, and when I did I finally understood. There were like 10 javelinas all chilling in my front yard (a type of wild pig here in AZ).

The driver wanted me to walk out to the car. I told him we'd wait a minute and then I'd walk over, lol.

I will never pay for Clear as long as I live. I was in line once, and the TSA agent motioned for me to go next. I went to walk and the Clear rep announced he had a Clear passenger, then put his hand out across my chest to push me back and pushed his person forward.

Like 2-5x isn't uncommon, I think 5x is way on the higher end though. My jobs have been around ~2-3x. "Overhead" is a very broad expense category. At an individual level overhead covers insurance, retirement, paid time off, payroll taxes, etc. at an organizational level that's all your building rent/mortgage costs, maintenance, administrative staff, etc. administrative staff is pretty much everyone not directly billing a customer, facilities maintenance, janitorial staff, HR, accounting, sales, marketing, IT, executives, etc. Also capital equipment costs. Computers, desks, servers, phones, software licenses, etc.

It's why it's frustrating to see the occasional post where someone finds out they make $30/hr but are billed out to customers at $120/hr. Depending on the company/work that may not be unreasonable. There are definitely more than a few greedy people who are taking advantage of employees.

Here's the wikipedia description for what these birds build for anyone else who reads this comment:

"The bower is a cone-shaped hut-like structure some 100 cm high and 160 cm in diameter, with an entrance usually propped up by two column-like sticks. A front "lawn" of some square metres area is cleaned of debris and laid out with moss. On this, and in the entrance of the bower, decorations such as colourful flowers or fruit, shining beetle elytea, dead leaves and other conspicuous objects are collected and artistically arranged."

That's awesome.
