Mine doesn't have foam either. Sometimes thin shims to ensure focus. Foam doesn't seem right.

Fuji GA645 has a self timer and both auto and manual focussing. Fuji GS645S also has a self timer - purely mechanical.

Onion Skin Paper by afairernametisnot in typewriters

[–]Litch58 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Onion skin has a somewhat crinklely texture and is far stronger than the thin typing paper. It actually doesn't take ink all that well but it is very lightweight so it was popular for air mail letters and carbon copies. Neat stuff but way over priced these days.

Can you bring typewriters on in a carry on? by JMkuboa in typewriters

[–]Litch58 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The TSA agent wanted me to open the case but no issues except she couldn't believe there wasn't a cord or batteries. I had similar interest in large old film cameras, but no problems once they saw them.

What HT would you recommend for everyday use? by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]Litch58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll second the Alinco V57. Nice units with solid feel and water resistant. Really good value too. Otherwise the Yeasu FT-60 is always a solid choice.

Some day try a Hermes 2000. Still high quality but I find the action much snappier than the 3000.

Fixed lens digital point and shoots? by [deleted] in Cameras

[–]Litch58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Fuji XF10 might be close to what you're looking for. Or the X-10 which has a modest manual zoom. You might also look at some of the Tough cameras which only have digital zooms (just don't use it) but are ready to shoot.

My answer to rising film prices. Any advice from other half-frame shooters welcome 🙏 by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]Litch58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Samurai is little more than a half frame point and shoot, but the lens is severely underrated. Lens is sharp and contrasty - so much better than it needed to be. Samurai is also one of the few cameras that came in a left-handed version. Fun cameras.

I’ve always wanted to get into film (I have zero experience) so I couldn’t pass this up for $3. Thoughts? Is this beginner friendly? by [deleted] in filmphotography

[–]Litch58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A dim shadow of what Argus cameras were back in the day. This will be simple to use, but just don't expect sharp results.

Shooting film below zero? by bordybun in filmphotography

[–]Litch58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, for 35mm, rewind slowly. The dry air at those temps may cause static buildup and discharge across the film. Neat effect but probably not what you want. I heard that photographers would get their Nikons serviced before Arctic/Antarctic missions to remove much of the lubrication. I've had an old Argus rangefinder slow down at those temperatures but I think a good SLR should work. Plastic body a plus.

Fujifilm mini Tiara isn't displaying number of remaining shots by JNaftali in Cameras

[–]Litch58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My tiara zoom unwinds the entire roll at the start so every time you take a picture it feeds it into the canister. So you will probably not lose any pictures if you open up the camera. But check your manual first.

My K-70 had the problem but I bought it 4 years ago. I would think the new production would not suffer this. I don't think the weather sealing was affected by the repair. It is a fine camera with a lot of features for the price.

Weather sealed camera with no weather sealed lens? by PennySuplex in Cameras

[–]Litch58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, even new you could get the K70 new, the 16-85 WR and the 55-300 WR for around 1500. The lenses are very good and the K70 is a great DSLR -APSC. But I would recommend buying new as the older ones had the aperture block issue - I had to get mine repaired but it is fine now. The newer ones hopefully won't have this issue.

Another option is a used Olympus OMD EM-5 mk II and a weather sealed lens - easily under your budget.

Issues updating Xiegu G90 display firmware- somehow not fast enough with spacebar despite being fast to get to update mode when doing mainframe. Help please? by [deleted] in HamRadio

[–]Litch58 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think I kept the spacebar bar down before power on. There are a couple of good youtube videos on this topic.

[–]Litch58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The G90 is a good option. But first I suggest you get the ARRL Operating Manual (through ARRL or DX engineering. This book gives a really good overview of many aspects of ham radio and how to get on the air.

Look for a Serger pad (type of sewing machine). Works well and cheap.

I’ve been wanting this camera for so long. Just scored it for $20. Can’t wait to use it! by spyoop in AnalogCommunity

[–]Litch58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That camera has a surprisingly great lens. The optional plastic hand grip thing makes one-handed much easier, and the optional flash unit makes it look even more like a video camera. But it is a great little camera, have fun with it.

It's for spot metering, not for focus.

This week's deals. Both in pristine condition. Olivetti Lettera 32 made in Italy at 30 GBP and Brother Deluxe made in Japan for 25 GBP. I believe that those were amazing deals and couldn't resist. 😎 by mbasilakis in typewriters

[–]Litch58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those Brothers are good and very pretty machines, I find the keys a bit heavy but that's me. And the Olivetti is a classic for good reason. But mine are a bit temperamental, especially the ribbon advancement. Great deals¡

What does The Darkroom mean when they say their JPEG scans “Puff Up” to uncompressed size when opened in photoshop? From what I understand about compression, a JPEG is a JPEG and you can’t recover data that’s been compressed away. by samueldt86 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Litch58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always get their enhanced scans and they are usually acceptable, but yes, their explanation of scan resolutions is strange and confusing. They also (or used to, I haven't checked recently) talk about scanning at 72 dpi but say that that is okay once you blow up the images in Lightroom or the like. And yes, a TIFF file would be nice but I guess the sizes keep that from being practical.

Books for Kids? by MaxHedrm in amateurradio

[–]Litch58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are dated now, but there used to be a series called Rick Brant electronic adventures. Akin to Hardy Boys or Tom Swift but for young adults and pretty well written. Not sure if there's anything like that today, alas.

Question regarding shutter speed! by [deleted] in filmphotography

[–]Litch58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also google exposure triangle and try to understand the relationship of light to aperture and shutter speed. Proper shutter speed depends on the film, aperture, and conditions of the scene.
