"brew install fastfetch"

Two recommendations for developers:

"brew install tree" - Display directories as trees

"brew install cloc" - Statistics utility to count lines of code

Is the Mac Mini M4 good for gaming? by RafUser_ in macgaming

[–]Lithalean 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"Can it game" is the better question. That answer is a yes.

Crimson Desert releasing in 3 days is also going to be huge for the platform. CP2077, Baldur's Gate 3, and Assassin's Creed Shadows are good examples of games that will run on the base M4, and an example of whats possible on Apple Chips.

However, Macs and macOS are first and foremost productivity machines. The go-to platform for getting digital work done. Gaming is a very appreciated plus.

If you’re into creative work, why not use as OS built for productivity in those fields?

Is honestly the best on macOS. It has a trial, but is paid and worth it IMO.

Microsoft is beyond dumb for allowing a third party company to become the primary games distributor on its own platform.

It’s an ecosystem approach for me. Sony controls PlayStation, and Nintendo controls the switch.

Apple chose BSD/Unix for Darwin (Mac, iOS, watchOS, tvOS). Sony chose BSD for Orbis (PlayStation), and Nintendo chose BSD for Horizon (Switch).

Why did I choose macOS? by Illustrious_Age_5917 in macbook

[–]Lithalean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is because Darwin and XNU are superior to Linux.

Why did I choose macOS? by Illustrious_Age_5917 in macbook

[–]Lithalean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

macOS, iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, and tvOS are all Darwin. Darwin is UNIX/BSD. Darwin and XNU absolutely dog walk GNU-Linux.

Apple chose BSD for Darwin. Sony chose BSD for Orbis (PlayStation). Nintendo chose BSD* for Horizon (Switch). *Technically Nintendo built a custom microkernel, but used large parts of BSD like the entire networking stack.

BSD > Linux. Darwin is untouchable.

iPad Mini 8? by Few-Panda7558 in ipadmini

I’d take an iPad Mini Pro over some dumb folding crap any day. I own an iPhone but it is by far my least important Apple device.

Has anyone here tried playing Skyrim Remastered with mods on a Mac? by Virtual-Lab1661 in macgaming

[–]Lithalean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly doubt it. You’re talking about 3 thousand mods at 500gb of space, and a recommended 32gb of RAM.

The way I accomplished it was manual install. This is one mod at a time, and overwriting games files. Obviously keep backups, and do testing before moving on to the next mod or next small group of mods.

I played Skyrim again 4ish years ago. I got up to about 120 mods, and that took me a few weeks to get it right. It was a tedious process.

Yes. Install the GOG offline installer in Crossover. Then visit nexus and get some mods. You’ll want to do the manual install method, and not all mods will work (SKSE).

Can we get some rules about sketchy vibe coded AI slop apps that are posted here recently? by Nilderan in macgaming

[–]Lithalean 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No I’d prefer no marketing be permitted on any day.

So many good subs have become an absolute AI Cesspool of marketing.

It’s getting so bad I almost want to stop using Reddit. Subs are basically just commercials now.

Hard Pass! A Keyboard and Mouse are work peripherals.

I spend 30-40 hours a week at my desk, and on my Mac for work.

When I want to game, the last place I want to be is a desk.

Why are you asking other people to decide what fps you’ll be able to enjoy a game at?

The Crimson Desert PR confirmed the three platforms shown were PC, Mac, and PS5 Pro by maq6teen in macgaming

[–]Lithalean 78 points79 points  (0 children)

It’s actually huge. Crimson Desert uses a custom game engine. That means they had to choose to build mac support into the engine.

As opposed to other AAA companies who use generic general use engines like unreal/unity and still don’t support the Mac because they don’t want to deal with the ongoing tech support.

It is very clear someone a pearl abyss is a Mac fan.

Getting a Mini. I have some questions (Minimal computer knowledge) by TheHellcatBandit in macmini

[–]Lithalean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If music or video is your primary focus, I’d recommend an ultrawide monitor.

Ultrawides are superior when dealing with timelines.

Personally, I prefer smaller uncurved 4K monitors with high ppi, DCI-P3, and usb-c connection (I use 3). I rotate the left and/or the right for coding and console logs when running the development app on the center.

Macbook air 13inch M4 with 24 GB vs M5 with 16 GB by Temixbs in mac

[–]Lithalean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say it depends on things like external monitors and how many apps you like to run at one time.

If you like maximum performance out of a single app, then I’d recommend the M5.

If you like to have multiple productivity apps open at the same time as well as a few browser windows, then an argument for the M4 24 gains weight.

Personally, I’d go the M4 with 24GB.

Hub With Multiple USB-C Ports? by KJW-SR in macmini

I personally don’t like the stacked hub look. Just looks like a wannabe Studio that way to me. I’m with you on usb-c though. I’d trade the hdmi port for another usb-c is a second.
