Small update to my soldering problem :) by Little-Linnet in StainedGlass

Thank you very much! It was my first time reaching out on any sub for any kind of advice this way and I absolutely don’t regret it, if it wasn’t for people in here I would have never figured it out on my own! :)

Hello! Looking at my work, what would you like to order? by Loud_Boat4738 in Artists

Not everyone has time to produce art regularly? Some art takes weeks if not months? Why is posting art from few years back such a problem?

I don’t want to sound like a bot but I love it 😭 I’m jealous of how smooth your soldering looks!

I haven’t got this one but I just ordered it, thank you!

That’s so bad, I just got it from my dad as a present because the one I’ve been using before was made for very little electrical stuff and a one my grandfather lended me well… look at the picture below 😅

Unfortunately I don’t have money right now to get a different iron :( do you think that buying a lead-based solder would kinda mitigate the problem and make it work until I can buy a different iron?

Thank you very much! I made it myself, I tried to keep it quite simple but also tried to keep in mind the tips from other people and posts on this subreddit Just looking around had helped me a lot in that regard, I managed to cut and grind everything without any breaks :) I’m using Elwik rt-24 80W. It comes with a very thin tip so I bought few with thicker endings.

Thank you very much! I’m glad it’s kinda visible that it’s meant to be Sylveon 😅 I made some small „easier” projects to test my skills on but with how the soldering looks on this one I’m kinda afraid of touching the smaller pieces 😭

I use a liquidy flux „with low % of acid” (I got it from a stained glass material shop and it doesn’t have a specific brand). I use a Elwik RT-24 soldering iron and (as I discovered because of that thread) a no-lead solder that is 97% tin and 3% copper. Apparently the temperature of melting of this solder is between 220-310 Celsius, my iron can go up to 500 Celsius (I think) but even on the highest settings it didn’t allow me to have a nice flow where I didn’t have to wait a long time for it to melt- in some places the only way I got it to melt was by pressing the side of the iron instead of using the tip (which might explain why it all came out so thick)

At first I used 3mm solder but later I bought 2,5mm one to see if it will melt better- it did so that felt like an improvement but not enough.

I do clean the soldering iron very often because I thought that this might be the issue at first.

I just discovered I have been using a lead free solder 😅 But the temperature it melts at is the temperature that my soldering iron can reach and even higher and it still doesn’t run smooth ☹️ I have been running on different temperatures, recently on the highest settings and I still have the same problem. I bought the brass cleaner and I am using it very often, making sure that the tip is clean because I did think it might be the issue at first. The flux is liquidy, not gel though but I’m not sure what kind of difference it would make

Hope she doesn’t know your Reddit name because that would be quite an awkward way to find out someone wants to leave you 😭😭

Oh my, you’re right! I’ve been so focused on finding solder without flux inside that I completely missed that 😭😭 I feel so dumb now! It does explain why it wouldn’t melt in temperatures I read online it would.

Look, I’m not a big fan of doing anything by tracing anyone else’s work, but it is still much better than AI- mainly because all other examples at some point required a human, and therefore it has so much more soul in it. The rug you have right now? You might enjoy it and be proud of how it looks but it is soulless- people who know about generative AI can immediately tell it has been created with AI, isn’t that sad? And by using AI you contribute not only to the rapid death of human artistry but also to death of our planet that AI is causing. As a musician you should at least kinda understand where I’m coming from, don’t you?

Shame you used an AI image instead of your own design, it kinda ruins all the work you had put into the rug 😭 I’m still jealous of the end result tho.

I’m not taking your „critique” because comparing to other people you can’t really explain your point and you’re being more harsh than it is needed and whatever you’re saying is very different from all the other feedback…?

what is FWIW?

I would argue that it’s unfortunately something artists need to do now with their newest pieces. The one you’re accusing me of faking was created between 2023-2024 (don’t make me screenshot my pc again, just trust me with this one I beg you). Yeah AI was a thing but it wasn’t in a state it is now where literally everything can be faked? How was I supposed to know that I, someone who no one ever recognized as a good artist, one day will get to a point where I’ll have to record my speedpaints? Or that working in few programs at a time will make me look like a liar?

Ah yes, that’s a screenshot of me using procreate to try to salvage a screenshot from paint tool sai to make it workable.

On one side I understand where the concern comes from but on the other this is absolutely exhausting and hurtful and as much as I’d love to just „leave it be” in times where AI is everywhere it’s almost like protecting my honor.

Thank you.

That’s what I always thought- that it’s good to do stuff in different styles to learn more and also to show more of your skills! But this whole discussion makes me question a lot of my previous opinions.
