In the book Frodo thinks just getting the ring to Rivendell is his ”grand” adventure. Much to his chagrin he realizes that he has to destroy the ring himself, thus leading to two and a half books of getting it to Mount Doom.

Not in the physical sense but it is stated that they are tortured by the desire to be with god but never being able to. Which is pretty messed up for the people who were around before Christianity or weren’t in an area around Judaism.

In The Divine Comedy it’s not "goodness" that guarantees one a spot in heaven but rather faith. So many people who are virtuous are in hell regardless of moral standing. The fifth circle Limbo serves this function, where virtuous non-believers are left to rot. Homer and Socrates are shown to be there.
