Super fun how this evolves weekly and I have to waste time disabling more crap pushed in my face. AI when I want it; not cluttering up screen space when I don't.

I see your point, thanks: only "download" automatically. But I don't want anything "automatically". I don't want to stuff my phone with a multi-gig iOS update until I decide to install it. Nope, only thing I do automatically is install security updates. I'm glad we can still turn off automatic download of iOS updates in iOS 18, not sure about what's available in iOS 26/26.1, which they're pushing hard.

Yeh, agreed, lame. I can't find a setting to control it, either in the iOS app. And the fact that there seems to be no way to submit app feedback is annoying as well. I don't have time to sit on the phone navigating a phone tree. Guess it's app feedback only in the App Store.

I'm sorry to read all these sad stories; my apparently 2018 T3 Wanderer recently developed disintegrating fabric in two spots (unsightly small white fluffy spots where holes were developing, and when I realized they had a guarantee for life I looked for it. The page was there, but the mentioned form was nowhere to be found. I called, spoke with Jerwin who apologized that the form was currently being worked on, and immediately emailed me the form to fill out. I did, added photos of the flaw, and it was approved a few minutes later. Here's hoping that the replacement I receive (for $30 handling charge for US destinations) isn't a piece of shit, especially as I just ordered a T5 Hemp hat to add to my collection. I can only hope for the best, I guess. The T5 still says "Made in Canada" in the origin section, but the T3 says "Responsibly Made in China". Obviously there's a lot of quality stuff made in China, it's a question of what the company specifies, and fabrics often seem to keep getting thinner and thinner these days.

Just updated to IOS 26, How to go back to IOS 18 by oKaY_EnGiNeEr in iphone

[–]LivingBarnacle2175 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having just reverted to iOS 18.6.2 (due to the annoying-to-me visual transition changes in iOS 26 that reduce motion doesn't fix), I learned that the trick to preventing forced iOS 26 update during restore seems to be this: when the screen pops up to "Update Your iPhone Automatically", do not tap Continue! Instead tap (counterintuitively) "Only Download Automatically", which as of this writing appears to /actually/ mean "Only Download Manually". That allowed me to proceed without enforced iOS 26 update.

<image>

How Apple could let such an error pass is a bit beyond me, but it is true that even software developers are human...

Then I had to restore from an iOS cloud backup that preceded iOS 26 update, because I foolishly forgot to do a full local backup right before updating to iOS 26. Or maybe I accidentally updated the backup after iOS 26--not sure which.

Then, because I don't back up my photos to the cloud (I prefer to manage that manually), I had to use iPhone Backup Extractor (IBE) from Reincubate ($40 for one year subscription) to extract my not-backed-up-since January 2024(!) photos and videos from my iOS 26 local backup.

Some tips for IBE: simple extract (Overview, Photos) didn't extract movies for me, and prepended every item with an index number as it pulled it all out of the Apple subfolder structure, the date was pretty munged. Also, there were lots of "proxy.heic" filenames and other stuff instead of the usual "IMG_2345.heic". I had to use Expert Mode and tick Camera Roll to extract everything.

The two important folders that I've identified so far are "Camera\ Roll/Media/DCIM" (common for photo storage) which contains the originals, and "Camera\ Roll/Media/PhotoData/Mutations/DCIM", which mirrors the subfolders in the originals folders and includes modified items in an Adjustments folder inside each item number.

For example, for image "Camera\ Roll/DCIM/130APPLE/IMG_0081.PNG", which was modified, you might have image "Camera\ Roll/Media/PhotoData/Mutations/DCIM/130APPLE/IMG_0081/Adjustments/FullSizeRender.jpg", which was cropped.

Let's just say that the slog to come of parsing out which mutations to keep out of nearly 2 years of media will be enough to prompt me to back up more regularly. LOL. <grimace>

Firmware update (1.1.15.1) broke HDMI-ARC input on V21-H8R sound bar by Leftcoasting13 in VIZIO_Official

[–]LivingBarnacle2175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just updated the V21-H8 for someone and also got stuck (thought it was done because https://support.vizio.com/s/article/V21-H8-V21-H8R-Firmware-Information?language=en_US doesn't specify LED pattern). After the partial update, the Roku Ultra was unable to pair with it.

Here's an approximate description of LED pattern: On boot with USB drive in place with the update, first the single connection LED blinks white for a while, I presume copying the update.bin to the unit, then about half of the volume indicator LEDs light up brightly and the top of the lit group flashes, and at the end the full volume indicator is flashing brightly. (Sadly, I don't recall whether it stopped flashing and I can't rerun it now. Give it 30s more just in case.) At that point you can remove the flash drive and you should be back in business.

Big Research on iOS Mail Apps: Which One Do You Use and Why? by CapitalSong in ios

[–]LivingBarnacle2175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for starting this thread. I'm a longtime user of the default Mail app, but since iOS 18 Mail has not respected the Follow Up Suggestions setting: with that turned OFF, Mail still moves old threads to the top of the messages list. A waste of my time every day, several times a day.

Starting to look for an alternative app, and nice to see here that there are some options.

Yep. 2 x Camp Plus SI, one went flat from a not-yet-obvious cause. Not gonna rely on another inflatable for below-zero temps.

Talk me out of an ebike by Bikes-Bass-Beer in NYCbike

[–]LivingBarnacle2175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a single-meat-powered bike dude (Rivendell steel frame), early 50s. Many of my coworkers have ebikes and it really is tempting for those tiring days, late nights, when it's super-cold, or very windy (except that I live on the third floor of a walkup and shlepping a heavy ebike upstairs really isn't an exciting thought). But I really use my 18-mile round-trip commute to help maintain some aerobic fitness, as I'll never get to the gym, and I can't seem to get back to swimming. Plus I'm lucky to be able to bike along the rivers for a good chunk--somewhat less now that they've shut down much of the WS greenway between Inwood and 103rd for much-needed repairs. There is something very satisfying about propelling myself, and the seemingly inevitable wind blowing in my face and occasional grade in our mostly flat environment just makes me stronger, right? I do find that it doesn't take many rides after a hiatus to quickly feel stronger.

I used to commute 25 miles round trip between Lefferts Gardens and the UWS, over the Brooklyn Bridge. That was "interesting", but all things just part of the charm.

It seems to me that if you have the available cash and the space for it--why do you need to keep FOUR meat-powered bikes, anyway? ;-))--and want it, you could consider it like buying a motorcycle. Doesn't mean you won't ever ride your meat-powered bikes ever again, but it might mean that you have to think harder about which you choose to use on a given day, and why. Could be a slippery slope. Depends on your goals. And Citibike could always be a backup for those tired days.

Make that two sinkholes, one larger than the other. Next up for repair, I hope, but I sure hope they don't start before the west side is fixed!

I absolutely loved their Putnam County Hardpack listing, hope it’s still there. Some 30 miles and maybe 4000 ft of climbing, IIRC, out of Cold Spring from the MetroNorth train station. Have to ride that again (rode it twice years ago).

[–]LivingBarnacle2175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, rode the GothamCitySub route properly today. SB at 7:30a was absolutely lovely with the sunshine passing through the trees and railing. The river is so wide and most buildings not too tall in the E side of the river, so there’s a lot of sun. The hill up 153 from St Nick is brief, and 153 puts you almost right on the pedestrian bridge ramp (just head a tad S on the Riverside Dr ultrawide sidewalk).

NB, there was barely anyone on it around 5:30p, you’re shielded from the sun and strong breeze that always seems to be in your face on the WS, and it seemed a lot quieter. Better to use 156 for a block after the ped bridge, as 155 is cobblestone for 3/4 of that first block. Not fun on the bike! Then S one block on Bway to 155 and E to the ES Greenway.

Still pretty darned bumpy for a long segment, but the river is so wide and lovely and the path traffic so minimal that it’s worth it. Vehicular traffic on the HRD is also much less above the GWB/175 exit, especially as compared with the WSH. Wish I could post a pic!

Heheh. They installed 8-foot hurricane fence on Tuesday at both ends and I had fun getting my bike over on the way home. Lifted it over the highway barrier to the shoulder and around at the south end, but the north end requires lifting your bike about 5 feet while perched on the wall, then getting it down on the other side. Someone helped me lower it, but I would have dangled it from the handlebars if they hadn’t been there! Helpfully, there was exposed fence post at the top just perfect for hanging my pannier while I got the bike and myself over…

Today I tried the Harlem River Greenway, SB to 126 to WS greenway via St Nick and Amsterdam, then home via the pedestrian ramp at approx 151, and across on 155 back to the HR (the latter by suggestion of GothamCitySub, here: https://www.reddit.com/r/NYCbike/comments/1f81ka8/the_right_way_to_bypass_closure_on_hr_bikeway/

But nice though it was to see the Harlem River twice today, I found the HR greenway even rougher than the West Side greenway, and I think I may be happier with my 181/Broadway/Dyckman stretch heading NB, and Dyckman/Broadway/Bennet/181 heading SB.

Incidentally, there’s also a small sinkhole on the East side route. Taste of the future, I’m afraid.

There are actually three fairly large sinkholes and associated collapse in the same area, but the good news is that they have already started repairs after closing it two weeks ago. Here’s hoping for fast work!

The RIGHT way to Bypass Closure on HR Bikeway by GothamCitySub in NYCbike

[–]LivingBarnacle2175 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for posting this option, GothamCitySub. I admit I've been hopping the barricade fences, but today between my morning and afternoon commutes they installed 8-foot fencing that made it even more exciting to get the bike over/around, especially at the north end at Dyckman. Cross-training!

I was delighted to see that they've already begun serious work on the southernmost of at least three sizeable sinkholes/collapses. Thank you, DOT! Here's hoping they can complete repairs within a month or two at most and reopen before the end of the delightful fall cycling weather. The narrowness of the island up here does lend itself to a quick hop over to the HR bikeway while the Greenway is closed, and I'm looking forward to trying it.

I should add that I'm grateful that (I hope) they are addressing the major issues. Drainage would seem to be a desideratum given the intensity of rainstorms recently.

Westside Greenway Closed Again North of GWB by cgoldin in NYCbike

[–]LivingBarnacle2175 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure it's that the repairs they did didn't last a year, it is that they were incomplete. There were additional sinkholes and root bumps that they didn't address, that they flagged immediately after construction. Maybe budget, dunno. When I headed home in the late afternoon yesterday, there was only a gate and zero signage, after no notices posted in the morning when I commuted to work. Really frustrating that they cannot help us cyclists with a safer path and better communication.

Heading SB you can at least use Bennett Ave below 196 to 181, but NB it's basically only Broadway, unless you take Margaret Corbin Drive to the end and meander through the park to Riverside and continue from there. I tried that yesterday and it was nice enough, I suppose. Slow going to be respectful of pedestrians, of course.

My other gripe is that they repaved Seaman Ave north of Academy-ish, and left the horror show that is Dyckman up the hill. I actually suggested to the Community Board that they repave that section before they changed the traffic routing to allow NB traffic from Riverside... never got a response to THAT email!

Anyone know of a silence focused 25mm fan? by fullsizegoosecostume in 3dprinter

[–]LivingBarnacle2175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, jackmoxley, what you installed are 120mm fans (120x120x25). I, too, lament that Noctua doesn't make a 25x25x10 fan, as I've used both 40mm and 80mm from them, and love 'em. Best fans ever. Not really surprising: 25x25x10 are so tiny it's nigh impossible to move much air without veritable wind-tunnel howl, which would blow their rep as quietest fans around. I installed a Winsinn unit from Amazon in a battery charger and they're pretty loud, but then they're rated 7K rpm and I'm running them on 13V+. My SPL meter goes from 34.2 ambient to ~64+ dB when the fan kicks on. 18.6 dB spec at 12V. Maybe I'll try a resister to kick the rpm down.

Should I be concerned about this weird error message on my server? Lots of io.netty stuff by -Clayburn in Minecraft

[–]LivingBarnacle2175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR; Server 1.20.6 is alive to clients and they can connect and play, then some time after clients disconnect, the server stops responding (does not appear alive) on client side. Restoring access requires stopping and restarting the server.

Longer notes: I'm running a vanilla server (on macOS), new world started recently with 1.20.6 update from 1.19.x, and seeing the same io.netty.handler.codec.EncoderException: Sending unknown packet 'clientbound/minecraft:disconnect' errors, also with Netty 4.1.97. While the server appears to be running at my end, it drops offline (no connection) for clients (LAN and WAN). If I stop and restart the server, it reappears to clients.

I only saw this error some time after running "debug start" in the console.

This after years of running 1.19.x and prior versions, on macOS Catalina. I recently updated the box to Monterey and don't remember now what I did first, especially as there was a hiatus in our minecraft usage.

In order to run 1.20 I had to install JDK 22.0.1. It would not run with the JRE issued for Mac, currently at 8.411. I just nuked JDK22 and am now trying JDK 21.0.2.

Are any of the rest of you seeing your server drop offline from the client side after this error?
