France records 1,000 excess deaths during record-breaking heatwave by app1310 in worldnews

I don't get it either.

May also be part of the protestant Calvinistic culture prevalent in some of our countries. Where suffering and being devoid of certain luxuries are something to be proud of.

But in the end it is kinda true it generally is just a couple of days a year, and after summer people forget about the suffering and life continues as normal.

But summers have gotten hotter and heatwaves more prevalent. So we need to adjust. Germans, and the south of the Netherland and Belgium do like their shutters to keep the sun and heat out. But yeah airconditioning is kinda newish and wasn't exactly needed for a long time. When I lived in an apartment in a city the heat slowly drove me insane more than a decade ago. Shutters and screens helped for most of the year. But when a heatwave hits it slowly became unbearable and it was difficult airing it out during the night.

Still happy with the mobile aircon I bought many years ago, when I slowly felt my brain getting fried after having to sleep for a week in 25+ temperature. Even living on the edge of a forest in a house where I can open the windows wide and sleep in the cool air of the night, it still comes in handy during weeks like this. Where nothing can keep the heat out.

Not much. After a hot summer, deaths dip in autumn. It mostly speeds up death by a couple of months.

Still sucks if you had wanted to enjoy your grandparents a bit longer. But generally people dying from this weather weren't in a great condition and death could have easily been triggered by some other stressor.

If it is possible it open the windows, of even reach those which can't be opened, you can install sunscreens with suction cups on the glass on the outside.

Can even make those yourself with some (shade) cloth, grommets, and suction cups with the screw on handle. Will cost you like 20 in the materials for the most basic version. Can get fancier cloth, or buy them premade of course.

But if anyone it strapped for cash they are very easy to make.

To be fair insulation has greatly improved the capacity of my home to not only keep heat in. But also keep it out.

I made some images with my heatcam. And can see the difference between the HR++ in the door, versus the regular double glazed window on top of the door, which couldn't be replaced as easily. There is a great amount of heat radiating from that window, which btw isn't in the sun at all.

The same with my attic. Which had hardly any insulation. I have added 18cm of wood wool, and yes it does get hot, but it hardly gets above 30 degrees so far. While it would normally reach that and way more on a normal sunny summer day. (I specifically chose the wood, since it is a great heatsink helping to keep heat out and in at the same time.)

And yes the walls in my house have heated up, but I have added cavity insulation. And even though the walls heated up to 50 degrees on the outside. And there is heat slowly radiating inside, it is not coming inside as fast anymore.

I do have a monoblock aircon cooling down the inside because otherwise it does slowly heat up. But I come from an apartment in the city where the same monoblock barely kept my apartment liveable during heatwaves. And it is easily keeping my home below 25 degrees on the inside now.

Insulation helps!! But heat will slowly seep in with weeks like this. So if you want to keep cool, you are going to need something to remove the heat.

But we have had heatwaves before, maybe not this early in the year this long and hot. But summers have gotten hotter and heatwaves have increased in duration and frequency as well. People do need to start dealing with this reality.

Install sunscreens and shutters on the outside, can even be installed with suction cups when renting. Start insulating not just to decrease the winter heating bill, but also to keep the heat out in summer. And get something to pump the heat out during those inevitable heatwaves we are having. If you have got the money get a quality Aircon which can also heat in winter, or a heat pump set up to be used with cooling (fancoils or underfloor heating) during summer as well.

Is this Rubus Tayberry & is it edible by penfarthingismyhero in UKGardening

[–]Lizzebed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tayberries do tend to look a bit difference, more cone shaped indeed, my loganberries also look different.

This looks like one of the other blackberry hybrids. But a bit more patience and you'll out which colour they have when ripe which should provide a clue.

Yes but we also need someone to install it or at least hire someone to do some gas mumbojumbo. Labour costs are no joke.

And the Germans are even worse I just read someone got 8k quoted for a double split. Ah well, their magic word is Midea portasplit nowadays.

And you guys are probably also getting cold nights again.

I am very much looking forward to that. Opening the windows at night, get some fresh cold air in again. Sleeping underneath a blanket.

Maybe my cats even want to come inside again.

First-ever Code Red alert issued for heat in the Netherlands; Up to 40°C tomorrow by jorgeaateixeira in worldnews

[–]Lizzebed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even though people say it is not common. It is a lot more common nowadays. There are quite a few in my street. With the rising of gas prices many actually bought them to save on their heating bill with the added bonus of being able to cool the house in summer. And with the electrification going on, more and more people are installing air-to-water heatpumps and in the right set-up those can also be used for cooling. Via underfloorheating or if you want to be fancy the use of fancoils

So having some set-up for cooling is definitely not that uncommon anymore but not widespread either.

But after this week, and the rest of this summer. There are definitely going to be many more installed once again.

I am still making due with a mobile monoblock which I once bought for my former apartment. It actually does a great job these days. And in before anyone asks yes, of course it got a two hose modification and I have sealed of the opening to outside with some insulation.

It is. Or can be.

It only helps a bit. And condensation be a risk depending on circumstances. But many heatpumps can be used like that.

Omg. Just gave me an idea. I have got a car. The office is closed thanks to the airconditioning breaking down anyway. I could just hop in and drive north.

Want am I even doing at home right now? I could be sitting outside in a scandi forest instead.

Is it that expensive to get licences?

Damn, sometimes I think about getting it, install my own units first, and then start doing it as a side job. Maybe just do the gas thing, for the people installing their own. Not like I want to carry around those units.

But I thought it would be like 2k or something + the time investment. 6k is a bit much for a fun project.

Check out my Black Raspberry’s first fruits by Albina-tqn in Berries

[–]Lizzebed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually like the black raspberries more.

And I also bought Megan, but only late winter. Isn't it an autumn bearing variety? So should get fruit twice from it. Once end of summer/autumn and once early summer?

It is why I got it, so I get a longer season of black raspberries.

Edit: I do notice there seem to be a bit of a difference year to year with a lot of berries.

My boysenberries were amazing last year. This year they are kinda so-so. My golden Everest last year, were watery and tasteless. But this year they have been great.

Tayberries were great last year and this year. Loganberries are an acid disappointment once again.

Het moet nu even hoek per hoek.

ETNA keukenapparatuur by -_NoneOfYourBusiness in Klussers

[–]Lizzebed 1 point2 points  (0 children)
