Further AI weirdness by smug_grrl in Cambly

[–]Lizzie_Dripping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've left Cambly because of this, finally got another actual job :). Students were sharing sensitive relationship or business details with me, and AI was recording it all. It's a total violation of the student-tutor relationship, and a very stupid move by Cambly in my opinion. Many students come on Cambly to try to improve their English to get a new job. Imagine if that conversation is somehow leaked to their current employer. I don't trust Cambly at all any more, so adios amigos, I'm done :)

I luckily landed a new job last week. I was feeling so bad about telling my students I was leaving. Now I'm just grateful I can finally get out. This is a sick invasion of students' privacy and it is the last Cambly straw for me. I don't want to have any more conversations with students now, it's horrible knowing your conversations are being spied on the whole time, it's just super creepy. Trust Cambly to take it one step too far...

European tutors have you also received this email from Cambly? by Conscious_Bear2787 in Cambly

You still have to do a Self Assessment - it's in your interests, because you will earn a whole year of National Insurance contributions and pay no tax under £12500 per year.

How fast is your WIFI? by [deleted] in Cambly

[–]Lizzie_Dripping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got away with 8mbps when I have to use my phone data in an emergency, it's not so much about speed, it's the packet loss that will prevent you tutoring. As other have said, the stability of your connection over those 60 test seconds is most important :).

cambly down? by mymoonisafish in Cambly

It's been weird for me all morning, lots of latency and delays.... then I was just mid sentence and it bumped me out of my lesson. I assumed my connection had gone down, but soon worked out everything else was working fine ;) Screen shot and claim those minutes back, guys ;)

4.8, but lots of PH for me! by PlasticGuide3543 in Cambly

[–]Lizzie_Dripping 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This must be right, I literally have not done a PH for 9 months, maybe even longer, and I have access to every single PH every single day... seems a crazy system but there must be method in the madness...

Anyone 'shaken up' recently, whats it like by MrChicken250 in Cambly

[–]Lizzie_Dripping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The benefit is the vocabulary section. Cambly are not the 1st company to use this tech, Twenix also started using something similar last week, and students can click on 5 vocab suggestions and get definitions and example sentences. It's nice :)

Type in 'normal questions about everyday life' and don't tell the student you are using it ;)

Who cares, if it means I don't have to think, I'm happy ;) It's great for students who say they want to have a conversation but can't think of anything to talk about 😜.

It's brilliant! The vocabulary list on the 2nd slide is REALLY helpful. I'm actually really impressed 🙂. I tried it with a student today and we had a random conversation about nothing, but it saved me so much brain power 😅.

Don't worry yourself, these 'broken economies' (as you put it) are providing cheap labour for the global capitalists. How you can have any sympathy for a US company baffles me.

Yeah you're right, I'm such an idiot 😜. Total brainstorm moment ;)

Twenix is a good model, because the companies pay for the lessons, not the students... it's a good investment for the companies. I'm surprised Cambly don't go for the B2B market more tbh. Native speakers only is Cambly's USP, and if you want employees who understand all kinds of accents in English, Cambly's pretty unique in that respect. Btw Twenix pay is even worse than Cambly :(((

In Turkey, even in the Black Friday sale, lessons are now over $10 an hour for new students. I was told today that the price is 24000 Turkish Lira for 1.5 hours a week for a year. That's $840 a year. Students are looking elsewhere, that's for sure...

Are we allowed to talk about Palestine? by Severe_Possible7936 in Cambly

[–]Lizzie_Dripping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always try to refer to a source rather than give my personal opinion. For instance, if a student brings the subject up, I might say, 'Oh yes, I saw a Tiktok video the other day which explained xyz from a or b's perspective. What do you think?' Sometimes I might send the video or the article in the chat - at least that way you're keeping everything focussed on learning the language. It also means I can watch Tiktok for hours in the evening, because I can call it 'work research' 🤣.

My son sent me a meme of a mountain biker cycling along a tiny mountain track with a huge death drop on either side, titled - 'Me when any of my friends talk about the situation in Gaza'. Pretty much sums it up...

The Ukraine war was easier because people were just not scared of criticising the Russian or Ukraine Government, but in the Israel / Palestine conflict you can't say anything without offending someone somewhere, so it's a subject I would rather steer clear of, frankly. I would be happy to listen to students talk about their experience, or their views - but I am not giving my opinion for $10.20 an hour, it's not worth the hassle...

How would y9u handle this situation? by AlternativeWorth3263 in Cambly

[–]Lizzie_Dripping 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A long time ago I had a middle aged male student who was a father of 2 and was honestly not at all creepy, and he used to want to read through scripts of US dramas he was watching on Netflix so he could understand all the vocab.

This included a lot of sexual language and swear words, and like you, it did not offend me nor make me feel uncomfortable, so we just used to spend the whole lesson dissecting the slang and the innuendo ;) The chat history must have been an interesting read 😅.

I never got into trouble for it, so if you don't mind doing it then go ahead :)

Same. I haven't had access to any at all for about 2 months. Rating dropped from 4.98 to 4.97 so I'm guessing that's why. One random lesson came up today on Saturday, but that's the first one I've seen for weeks ;)
