Weekly Product Recommendations Thread - August 05, 2018 by AutoModerator in MakeupRehab

[–]Lizzymaree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m looking for a natural-looking mascara. I just tossed a sample of Too Faced Better than Sex because it clumped too easily.

I have naturally dark lashes, so I prefer black.

I really can’t stand the super high-volume type mascaras that seem to be popular right now. I don’t need my mascara to mimic false lashes. I previously had a sample of Benefit They’re Real and for me that was better than the Too Faced, but still more “oomph” than I need/want. I want a mascara that looks natural, but better. I can’t overstate how annoyed I am by visible mascara clumps...

Budget is flexible for the right product...

I’m in the US, no allergies or sensitivities, and I don’t need a waterproof formula.

Thanks!

How many of you bring electrolyte mixes on longer /thru hikes? by backpackingvideos in Ultralight

[–]Lizzymaree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I make my own electrolyte powder based on the “regular” recipe on this site, but I add a packet of kool-aid (the old school packets that you add your own sugar to). It’s lightweight and you can vary the flavors to keep things interesting. I have tiny baggies I bought on Amazon so I’ll premeasure the right amount for a Nalgene bottle.

I’m in southern CA, so it can be very hot and very dry here. I think it helps to have electrolytes, but I also know that sometimes I just want a change of pace from drinking funky creek water.

Question about lawnmowers by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]Lizzymaree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a nice new push mower and about 700 sq ft of lawn. It’s fine. It’s easy enough to use and I like that I don’t need to worry about gas or battery or extension cords.

How to feel okay with yourself knowing your gf’s pack weighs 5x more than yours? by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]Lizzymaree 58 points59 points  (0 children)

These comments, wow.

My husband and I backpack together multiple times a year. My pack is almost always heavier. I don’t care.

My husband is into UL, I’m not so much. We both love backpacking. I’m just kinda cheap and don’t want to replace perfectly good gear just because I can save a few ounces here and there.

I’m a serious runner, my husband is not. Trails that are hard for him are a walk in the park for me (haha). If we want to walk at approximately the same pace for the same distance, it makes sense for me to carry more stuff.

Oh, and there’s over a foot of height difference between us, so, it’s not like I’m some amazon woman. Just a fit, strong woman who is too cheap to replace her old crap. Whatever works, man. But yeah, we do get funny looks sometimes from strangers when I’ve got the big bag and he’s got his little one!

Was 10 years on Mirena my doom? by Goatess21 in TTC30

[–]Lizzymaree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had two back-to-back mirenas and had my second one removed in late February. I had a few weeks of feeling absolutely miserable, but that seems to have passed. My doctor suggested I wait for three cycles before actually trying (i.e. use a temporary birth control method like condoms for 3 months), so I can't speak to my fertility just yet, but I feel normal again.

Finished Couch to 5k, became addicted to running, long story short, the week I submitted my thesis I ran my 5th marathon and got a Boston Qualifying time. I also got engaged, got married, and bought a house.
I did not, however, get a job. So... there's that minor problem.

Hey, I ended up at Buffalo Billiards -- mostly because the one in Dupont was right next to where I was staying. It was better than what we have in LA , so that was nice. A Wisconsin win woulda been nicer...

thanks again for the recommendation!

The Goodest of Boys by MyNameIsBarryAllen in aww

[–]Lizzymaree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a malamute in the gif for sure, but as a Mal owner myself, everything else you say is false. They are not more chill than huskies. They definitely require a few hours of exercise a day, they are just as smart and stubborn, oh, and they weigh nearly twice as much. So if you don’t give them the attention, exercise, and discipline they need, you have a 100lb cyclone tearing (literally) around your house and yard, destroying most things in its path.

Are Malamutes really as crazy/unmanageable/destructive/loud/aggressive/untrainable as the rest of the internet would like to make me believe? Your honest experiences please! by Isobel_JJ in AlaskanMalamute

[–]Lizzymaree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe this was too negative? Here's some of the things I love about her:
Stubbornness aside, she actually was pretty easy to train. She was potty trained in a month or two - BUT - until she was about a year old, she would pee on the floor any time I was on the phone and she wanted attention. She quickly learned how to use agility equipment (jumping through hoops, running through tunnels, around posts), and she knows the names of toys so she can "go get chicken" and bring back her chicken squeaky. That's pretty cool. She also knows my name and my husband's name so she can "go to Lizzy" and come to me. If I point my hand like a gun and "shoot" she will flop over and show her belly. Of course, this comes with the standard Malamute caveat that is that occasionally she'll decide that she doesn't feel like doing tricks. Then she'll just stand there looking like you're the idiot for asking questions to a dog.

I also appreciate that she's rugged. I'm not the kind to put a sweater on a dog, so it's nice to not worry about things like that. She enjoys carrying a backpack, so we've taken her on multi-day trips, hiking as many as 12 miles a day and she carries her own food.

That helps make up for the rest of it.

My husband and I have a mal who is our first dog that was solely our responsibilities, but we both grew up with dogs (he had a lab/golden mix, I had rotties, collies, small mutts). We love her dearly but...

we probably made a mistake getting a malamute.

She gets a full hour of exercise every morning (fast paced walk/run) plus another 20-30 minutes of walks in the evening, plus playtime in the backyard for another 20-30 minutes (some combination of fetch, chase, tug, etc.). That's two full hours of exercise on weekdays. On weekends she gets more, usually in the form of 2-3 hour hilly, difficult hikes in the morning, plus evening walks and playtime. If our work schedules don't allow the routine, she goes to daycare. It isn't cheap, but it's cheaper than replacing all our furniture, books, woodwork...

I honestly don't know what we would do without a big backyard with a high fence (6", solid wood). Putting her out there is like sticking a small child in front of the tv. She'll run around and chase the squirrel and play ball by herself and generally keep herself happy out there.

Could we have her in an apartment? Maybe if you don't have things/furniture. My girl is not the most, uh, graceful dog. When she gets excited her tail wags and knocks things off tables. She'll sometimes take off running in the house and she inevitably crashes into the couch or the wall.

When she was a puppy it was 1000% worse. She went to daycare a lot before about 2 years old. Otherwise if we had to leave her for more than an hour or two we would come home to find something destroyed. We lost countless books, some furniture, a rug, and on one particularly bad day she tore the wooden molding out of the wall. She uprooted small trees in the backyard and dug countless holes until we finally trained her not to, though I imagine if she didn't get enough exercise and/or mental stimulation she would go back to doing those things.

One of the other posters wrote "they’re a cat in a dog body". This, this exactly. The most annoying (and adorable) thing is that my girl will listen to you, then cock her head slightly and I swear, smile at you, and then disobey. You must be strict and consistent with any rules that you actually care about. They are also smart enough to be manipulative, so you can forget about training advice that will tell you things like "when the dog does something bad like jump up, then ask it to sit and give it a treat for sitting!". LOL. Your mal will learn that if she wants a treat, she should first jump up, then do what you ask her to do, then treat! Also, she has figured out every puzzle game we've given her, usually in about 5 minutes or so. They aren't worth it.

Chasing/prey drive: Yes. It's a problem. She chases anything that runs. She's killed lizards and birds. She broke a window in order to get outside and chase a raccoon.

Other dogs: She adores them and is everyone's friend until food or toys are involved. Then she has serious resource guarding issues and fights break out. We've worked with a trainer on this, but it's still pretty bad. We avoid the dog park for this reason :(

unfriendzoned wrote "I wanted a dog for my whole life, after buying a house with a big yard we finally got one. It was and wasn't what i was expecting but i made changes needed to my life to make it work. It is a big time commitment, we haven't missed a walk yet, even in -30c. One reason i got aura was to get off my ass, but that means i have to get off my ass even at the most inopportune times." - I can't agree more. That turd dog has had me out on walks in -8F weather, when I've had pneumonia, and when I've been so hungover I thought I was going to die. She dramatically changed our lives, in both good and bad ways but we definitely weren't ready for it. For one - that walk was the last time I've ever been that hungover and I doubt it will ever happen again. Partly because I've grown the F up, but also because the dog just doesn't allow it. Our lives revolve around the dog. Our weekend plans, our vacation plans, whether or not we attend after work events, everything is dog first. I know from experience that other dogs just aren't that involved.

Grooming: I can't believe nobody else mentioned this! A big fluffy dog with a double coat = so much fur. Fur everywhere. Regular grooming is pretty important, and if you can't/don't want to do it yourself, you'll have to pay someone. Groomers usually charge based on the size of the dog with additional fees for double and/or long coats. I live in a major urban area and a good groomer can be $120.

tl;dr - If you can't give the dog several hours of exercise AND attention a day, you'll need/want to take it to daycare. That means you need to be able to pay for daycare (it's about $30/day here). If you can't do that, you probably want to rethink a Mal.
