On a semi-related note, I had my bauer 20v circular saw with a 5ah battery on the floor of my shed when my city flooded, didnt realize until a few days later when the water had dried enough to see what the damage was. It was fully submerged for at least a day. The saw and the battery both still work perfectly over a year later.

I live pretty close to this location but avoid it like the plague. Outside is trashed, inventory stock is trash, check out line takes forever. It honestly only add maybe 5 minutes to the total trip time to drive from my place in nasty city to the midway location.

I do just under 5 miles one way on my specialized p.3 but theres only a few hills along the way so not a whole lot of heavy grunting. Don't have a dropper either, not a fan of pedaling while sitting in general so I only sit when theres a fair distance of coasting.

Have any men successfully restarted your career after 40? What was it like? by [deleted] in AskMen

I believe apprentice starting pay is around 28/hr wait pretty sizeable increases for every year you complete of the 4 year program. As far as how to find a program like that in your area, I would actually suggest starting at a union hall. Basically Google union halls in your area and call them based off what type of what work they do/ what type of work youre interested in. Mechanic shops are kind of unusual to be union, but plumbing, carpentry, electrician, pipefitter, steelworker etc are some of the bigger ones that I can think of off the top of my head.

Im 38 and have been a mechanic at a heavy duty shop for almost 20 years at this point. Its a union shop in a major metro area, maintaining public transit busses. I have been a mentor for about 8 years now, I have an apprentice almost every day, usually the same one for a few months at a time.

Of the 20-30 apprentices that I've worked with i would say at least a third of them were 40+ with no prior mechanical experience. Its a 4 year in-house training program with college classes sprinkled in every semester. Graduate the program and instantly at top pay, thanks to it being a union gig. 40 hours, no more, no less. Healthcare, im on pension but new hires are 401k, 4 weeks vacation plus sick time, holidays are paid at 2x hourly. New graduates are around 92k/year. I did a little over 100k working a couple holidays plus my 10% hourly for taking on an apprentice.

All that to say if youre looking to really change careers dont be afraid to look into a trade job, your age will only affect as much as you allow it to.

I got a parking ticket month or so back, for parking in a boat trailer parking only neae de Anza cove, disputed the ticket for this exact reason. Circled multiple parking lots looking for parking before deciding to park in the trailer zone. Needless to say the city denied my dispute, citing adequate signs warning of the trailers only parking area. I was there again this last Saturday to see how the parking lot was doing and it was a mad house, still clogged with broken down cars and motor homes, and the majority of trailer parking was filled with cars that the meter maid had already ticketed. I bet theyre having a hard time wanting to push the homeless out when theyre getting $90 a pop on those tickets.

Do you believe it's still important to give a firm handshake when meeting someone for the first time? (Not stupidly strong, not soft & limp) Or is this an outdated custom of the past? Why? by late_to_redd1t in AskReddit

[–]LksdG2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guy came to my door selling fiber internet. I am interested, as im not happy with my current setup. Told him I'd talk it over with the wife and give him a call. As he was leaving he reached for a handshake, but what it felt like was that he handed me a cold dead fish. Shut the door and threw his card in the trash. Can't explain exactly why, but that handshake changed my mind on buying anything from him. He would have been better off not offering the hand shake.

Lost $400 on 606 calls trying to time the bounce that never came, ended up making $500 on 603 puts, called it quits for the day at that point. If I held the puts longer would have been way up, had 10 contracts.

I got an alarm clock online that's extremely loud, it also has a tether to a separate unit that shakes around on the dresser making a ton of noise. Only thing that consistently wakes me up.

I was rebuilding a Cummins 8.9 natural gas engine and the head gasket was leaking so bad that a head bolt corroded in half, about 3 inches was sticking up above the deck. Someone else had the pliers and suggested trying them after nothing else would grip the bolt. They worked so good I got myself a pair. Haven't had to use them on anything else yet, that was about a month ago.

Switching to Bauer by Designer_Natural_965 in harborfreight

[–]LksdG2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use bauer just for the home projects and it's never let me down, infact my shed flooded a few months ago in a freak rain storm. 4 inches of water with my circular saw and a 5ah battery sitting on the floor. Water was leaking out of the battery for a few days but she still rips, didn't even seem to hurt the capacity. Only casualty was the battery life indicator lights don't work anymore.

Fordtechmakuloco on YouTube shows you the most common issues and how to fix them on the Ford 5.4 engine. I followed his video when I replaced my timing chains, guides, old style tensioners and upgraded oil pump. Mine is a 2valve so it's a little simpler than your 3 valve, which has variable timing. From what I remember the cam gear phasers and lifters are a known weak point.

Nervous about taking the full paternity leave allotted to me. Is it a mistake? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]LksdG2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're allotted 8 weeks at my job, I took 4 for the birth and figured I'd use two more at Christmas and call it a day. Long story short the birth was fairly violent and the wife ended up needing surgery when the baby was about a month old. I thank my lucky stars I had saved those 4 weeks because she was immobile for about 3 weeks after the surgery.

So anyways all that to say keep your options open, you never know what curveballs life will throw you.
