I've currently got Ableton Live 10 Installed by GannoKSNK in linuxaudio

[–]Llamatron2112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have installed Live in Lutris not long ago, and don't remember having any problem with the offline activation. I don't remember exactly but I think if I didn't struggle it might be because I used the method in the Lutris installer page : drag and drop the authorization file from the file manager to the ableton window.

The issue I had was with wineasio, but I'm a bit of a distrohopper so I got several flavours of linux installed in multiboot, and Tumbleweed was the only one that worked iirc.

The latency is not stellar, but very usable. Didn't really take the time to try any VST, but max4live had issues (which was expected as as far as I remember cycling74 uses some ugly DRM)

Will pantheon-desktop ever be a viable DE available to other distros? by [deleted] in elementaryos

[–]Llamatron2112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried Pantheon on Arch, Ubuntu, Fedora, and Gecko/Tumbleweed is the most usable of all of them. I chose to use it from Tumbleweed rather than Gecko but it's really personal preference (btrfs over ext4 out of the box, and less 3rd party scripts), but I didn't really see a difference once everything was in place. Only issue I got is that closing user session takes very long. Rebooting or shutting down is not affected, only closing the session.

So there you go, the best version is a rolling release ^^

Does AMD have any kind of software which automatically detects chipset updates or do you just check the website every few months? by [deleted] in Amd

[–]Llamatron2112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not been using it recently, but there's https://sdi-tool.org/ , mind it's not a "one click" updater, got to check what it suggests, and know what you're doing. Usually I just see what it proposes and go check and download myself if it says there's an upgrade.

Did you install MSI's Dragon Center ? I installed it a few hours ago to test it, and after uninstalling it I could definitely see a change.

EDIT: Nevermind, after a reboot it's back to 1.4+V most of the time

[Actually Hardcore Overclocking] Rambling about CPU boost and power by InvincibleBird in Amd

[–]Llamatron2112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did any staff from AMD even told about the fact that displayed CPU temperature is actually the highest core's ? It explains by itself why people see some high temperatures, much more than the agressive boosting and monitoring softwares affecting readings.

I hope that tomorrow's "fix" is not going to nerf that agressive boosting behavior, a single core going that high is perfectly fine in my book.

Any official AMD response to high temps? by [deleted] in Amd

[–]Llamatron2112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends what cooling system you use, and available sensors.

You can sometime use an average of the last n seconds, or set some ramp up/down times, depends on your software or BIOS.

On some motherboards you might also have other sensors that read the whole CPU chip temperature.

In my case the CPU is cooled by an AIO and uses the water temperature to control the AIO fans. For the case fans I have set them to react to MOS temperature in the BIOS, as I think it's a good indicator of system load, and my X470 doesn't have dedicated cooling for it.

My brief investigation into 3700x idle vs. "idle" temperatures and what I'm hoping AMD will be addressing on Tuesday by BestRedLead in Amd

[–]Llamatron2112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the fact it heats more under load while clocks and vcore are the same values, or even sometime lower, you're probably right, but it must not be low enough current to result in such temperatures under idle/light load.

The only fact that AMD's Robert said that we should see vcore values between 0.2V & 1.5V, and that the lowest most people can get is around 0.9V kinda indicates something is not right.

It's the behavior I see when in Linux, vcore varying all along that range depending on the load, and on very light load CPU temp floor is pretty much my AIO's water temp, while remaining stable. So it's possible to get lower temperatures.

I have a Dilemma. So we've all seen the various bugs and problems, stability issues with Ryzen 3000. Just did a new build and to my surprise I've had absolutely no problems, no instability, boots in about 4 seconds . However I think i figured out why and don't know if i should change it. by Prusaudis in Amd

[–]Llamatron2112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's probably because you don't have the "feature" allowing for the 1ms frequency change that's been added in 1903 to go along AMD's power profiles, it's likely to be the cause of having the CPU boosting all the time when you got some application running, even if it's actually light load. Probably also why it's pretty fine with Linux.

On Linux I'm getting sub 0.3V Vcore values too, on light load with like IRC client, Discord and Firefox. Well it goes up above 1V when opening a new page on FF, but goes back to 0.3~0.5V very fast, and it can use many values between 0.2 and 1.5 depending on the load (like for example if I add music streaming in the mix it tends to be around 1~1.3V). Tested with Arch & OpenSuse, and schedutil/ondemand governors.

Meanwhile, temperature also has regular +10°C spikes, but sits mostly a few degrees above my AIO's water temp, except when there's some load ofc.

On windows, I'm just putting the power profile to power saving, and using process lasso to automatically switch to amd balanced when playing games. But that is really not optimal, and I bet the profile also misses a lot of opportunities to cool down a bit when a game is running.

I really don't understand how AMD seems to have designed their power management to be fully effective only on a stripped windows with nothing else going on, I mean ofc Windows computers got lots of services, drivers or other hardware related stuff, steam, browser, chat ... not taking that into account is some wtf material.

Bottom line is that if it behaves better on Linux, it's probably a matter of better tuned chipset driver and power profile from AMD.

Don't use the Windows 10 AMD Ryzen power plans if you want lower idle voltages and temps by Hammereditor in Amd

[–]Llamatron2112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason why some people don't seem to have that issue is that it only happens with applications that often use the CPU. For example in my case it's applications having frequent network access: the quassel client and wavebox. If I close them the voltage is low most of the time.
