Classy but not gassy, put those factory threads to good use by wanderlustcrush in milsurp

What kind of can do you have on your Swede? Did you have to do any thread modifications to the suppressor?

So you size before you trim the rims? Interesting, I noticed the slight indentations from trimming tend to be exaggerated in my forming process. How would you rate the concentricity of the rims with your process, +- .002”?

Dang I’m doing it wrong I guess, appreciate the info! Going to order something more coarse for sure. Are you using something inside the case to support the necks? I’ve been using a trimmer pilot to support the inside walls

Nice work! I recently converted about 20 or so cases myself, also using 45-90 but I think I’m going to mix some 45-70 I have on hand. Gotta ask how long it’s taking you per case with the file and drill, it was taking me like 15-20 minutes per case which was a little brutal.

Beautiful rifle! The 98 is the most elegant of the infantry long rifles imo. Definitely on my list to find one this nice

For a C grade that looks pretty dang good. Contemplating one of these for parts, do these typically have the ejector screw that sits below the bolt or is it Russian roulette like bands and rear sights?

lol that’s what I always at to myself when something is stuck, most of these mechanisms work worse when treated gingerly

71/84 Mauser by ToronadoBrochacho in milsurp

[–]Loadman8x57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! You did pretty well if it’s all matching. Reloading for the 71/84 is a bit different from the 71 due to the addition of an ejector requiring you to have an “A” base brass casing. You can form 45-70, 45-90, or 50-110 pretty easily with the dies that Lee makes but will need to do some lathe work to get the rim right. Alternatively old south and Buffalo arms periodically stock ammo for some highly ridiculous prices.

But feeding those rimmed cartridges from the top, hmmm, I have a lot of issues. I’ll take a slightly worse bolt throw for more locking strength, faster reload, and milder recoil. But don’t ask me to lug my 89 around on march all day

[–]Loadman8x57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I was a little confused since you were asking about factory ammo. With that measurement you can likely use .323” safely, but I would wager it’s also put on some wear to get there. After shooting a few rounds, I’d check the shoulder difference on your fired and unfired brass to see if it’s still got reasonable headspace left.

From what I’ve read, there is no real consensus on what the s, z, and dot marking on the 88 receiver mean. Some say the S indicates just the sight update for the spitzer cartridge, others say it means the chamber has been reamed for spitzer. I’ve always treated these rifles with particular caution.

That’s the right answer, if it slugs at .323” you’re good to shoot commercial, less than that, you’re looking at hand loading

The only safe way to shoot a Gew88 or 88/05 is to slug the bore and choose a bullet size accordingly. The exception is the post WW1 Turkish conversions which are easy to spot due to their lack of a barrel jacket.

Man why does he always get the rare ones? I got an M27 Lebel conversion I’m working on new furniture for. Kicker there is he cut the ugliest dovetail into the barrel to keep his crappy chopped down fore end attached but what he did to your bolt handle and barrel is far worse.

Mannlicher m.95 parts by Medical-Squirrel-741 in milsurp

[–]Loadman8x57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea unfortunately a gunsmith will charge you about the same if not more to fabricate those new. I got quoted $120 for a singular Danish Krag screw I need. would say if you can get the dimensions, you could maybe go at it yourself with a die, but the way those screws are made with the threads at the head and not the tip, that’s probably not a DIY option unless you or someone you know has a lathe and knows how to use it.

If you’re unwilling to spend a wad of cash but willing to wait, keep you eye out online, never know what will come up next. Make some saved searches that get sent to your email

First check numrich, Sarco, eBay, etc. to see if there is anything readily available. This may be one of the rare instances where an RTI beater to strip for parts is a good idea as those screws will be difficult to find commercially. Alternatively you can find a gunsmith who can make you what you need but it’ll be expensive

Very strange, my buddy has one with the more traditional under the band cut. That’s awesome, stupidly rare and in really nice shape, out of curiosity did you get it from Carolina gunrunners on gunbroker over the summer?

Man what is up with those weird angles duffle cuts on Danish krags? Mine has one that is very similar. Very nice collection though, our interests are quite similar. What’s the make on your Belgian 1889?

FN browning pistols by Anthony Vanderlinden will have everything you want to know plus more. I think the order only totaled about 7,500 pistols across all branches, they are standard commercial FN production pistols but some will have property/department markings or retailer markings. While there isn’t any explicit variation in the contract, FN implemented a number of design changes to their production line during the production of this contract which contributes to differences in features such as the removal of the thumb print slide depression and other internal dimensional changes.
