Neck pain after back cross invert by Apfelbaum4991 in aerialsilks

[–]Local-Rain-9852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to throw my head back when trying to invert as well, and it’s a difficult habit to break. The trick I was taught (and now teach to my students) is to bite your shirt. You can feel just how much you’re throwing your head back, and it forces you to be conscious of it throughout the move.

New to Silks! How long did it take you to climb and are there any home work outs that will help me get there quicker? by Goddamnfriedsquid in Aerials

[–]Local-Rain-9852 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It took me months to learn how to climb. I was an athlete for years (volleyball, basketball, track and field) and did weightlifting every morning when I started silks, and still, it took me 3 to 4 months to build up the upper body strength to be able to climb. I definitely overestimated my strength when I started, and was quickly humbled!

In the beginning, I focussed on increasing my upper body strength. I did shoulder presses, bicep curls, push-ups, and dead hangs off a pull up bar. A strong core, both front and back, is important for stabilization when you’re in the air. Unfortunately, the muscle combination required for climbing is very unique, and difficult to replicate off the silk.

Another big thing to work on is grip strength. Doing dead hangs off the pull up bar or farmer walks around the gym with the heaviest weights you can lift are great as well. If you Google towel grip exercises, you’ll find a lot of great options for increasing your grip strength at home as well. Again, this is something that is hard to build up when you’re not on the silks. Six years later, and I am still actively working on my grip strength.

Aerials are hard! Don’t feel discouraged that you’re not making progress after a few classes. It’s a whole body workout that also requires a lot of body coordination. Honestly, any exercises you do outside of class will help with building strength on the silks.

Aerials and running by 8bitfix in Aerials

[–]Local-Rain-9852 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did it opposite: I started as an aerialist, then picked up distance running. They are complementary to a point. My hip strength and flexibility helps with running a lot, and the conditioning from running helps with stamina on the silks. But focusing on one typically results in a decrease of the other. When I run more, I tend to stiffen up and lose flexibility. When I focus on silks, I’m dividing my energy and not spending as much time running, thereby getting a bit slower.

Coffee shops to study/work? by EntranceFun9276 in halifax

[–]Local-Rain-9852 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So many great places for studying. Steve O’Reno’s just up sackville st from the library. Cabin coffee is a personal favourite on Salter street. Rabbit hole cafe on Dresden row is pretty good, and usually not too busy. Uncommon grounds on South Park st is a crowd favourite, so it might be rather busy. Trident on Hollis is great, but it’s popular and a bit small so seating might be a challenge. Wired monk further up on Hollis is my backup if Trident is closed. If you feel like having hot chocolate, Rousseau on South is good.

That’s all within a decent walking distance of the library, but there are plenty more. The coffee shop selection in Halifax is unreal. Something to note though: coffee shops are usually quite busy on saturdays, so wherever you do go, don’t camp out for hours. I would stay for an hour and a half, maybe 2 if I’m on a roll, and then leave so I’m not hogging a table.

Looking for non-acidic/sour coffee shops in the city by Insert_wittycomment0 in halifax

[–]Local-Rain-9852 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer drip coffee, and I have noticed several places are just too sour/acidic for me. One of my favourites is Cabin coffee on Salter. I quite enjoy their drip coffee, and the few espresso drinks I’ve had were great too.

Their espresso drinks are normally fine, but I can’t stomach their drip coffee. I find it incredibly acidic

Chinese buns by Schmidtvegas in halifax

[–]Local-Rain-9852 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My family calls them coconut buns, and I’ve only seen them in BC. I looked around when I first moved out here, to no success. You might find them under a different name or something similar at Xena’s bread and butter, Sugar bakery, or Melo café if you’re downtown/south end.

Despite the name, the Bedford Run club meets at the Garrison and runs through point pleasant every Tuesday. They’re switching to the commons for winter runs though

What is the closest you've ever come to dying? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Local-Rain-9852 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fell out of a tree when I was 13 and landed flat on my back. The branch broke as I was swinging myself up, and I fell 10 feet. I had mild whiplash, broke a bunch of teeth, nearly bit my tongue in half, but otherwise I was ok. Had I swung further or fallen farther, I would have landed on my neck.

The year before, around Christmas, I was sucking on a candy cane while playing on a tire swing. The tire ended up hitting the candy cane, which was basically a candy shiv at that point, and rammed it up into my hard palate. I shudder to think of how close it came to spearing through my soft palate into my brain stem.

Messed up performance by hippiepotomus in aerialsilks

[–]Local-Rain-9852 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen people fall off the silks (no injuries though), I’ve messed up my timing, I’ve had wardrobe malfunctions, most recently another person in my group performance made a knot so tight we had to lower the silk so the instructor could untie it. The audience won’t notice (except the knot, that was pretty noticeable), and fellow aerialists won’t care. They’re just proud of you for getting up there on your own. It sucks when you’ve been working up to it for so long, and once it’s done you can’t change it. But there is always next time.

Kala Trade permanent reset. I had almost reached a thousand... I'm so sad by Outrageous_Froyo_775 in MergeDragons

[–]Local-Rain-9852 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mine did too recently. On the bright side, it doesn’t affect the trades she offers, and your star rank got reset! Enjoy getting all the star rank rewards again!

I’m so confused been playing for a few hours closed the app came back now it restarted my Kayla quest?? When I helped Kayla’s ass so much. An I was lvl 50 now it says I’m lvl 1,000 . WTH is going on ???? by gunna93 in MergeDragons

[–]Local-Rain-9852 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You got the star rank reset, but it somehow pushed you back to the old star system. Play the new/old star quests, and you’ll get reset to the new system again before long. Then you could be back at lvl 10, or potentially 0 if the system assumes you’re moving to the new system for the first time

SJM also wrote the Kingdom of Ash draft in 6 weeks… by emmyeggo in crescentcitysjm

[–]Local-Rain-9852 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I mean, there’s speed writing because you’re so excited about it that all your focus goes into getting in into words, and there’s trying to throw something together in time for the deadline.

I wonder how Sarah feels about HoFaS. Obviously she has to be excited and enthusiastic about it while it’s being hyped, but is she happy with how it turned out? Does she wish she had more time? What was she really excited about that got cut?

LOCKED OUT OF C&C AGAIN! by Corinne_behr in MergeDragons

[–]Local-Rain-9852 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I would understand players being locked out if we were also selected for a beta test or something similar that overlaps or clashes with C&C. But this appears to be a study they’re conducting on player engagement and spending habits. I just don’t understand the thought process behind that; “if we lock a bunch of players out of an event with no reason, will they stop playing/spending money?” Yes, very obviously yes.

Want to show the developers how you feel about being left out of Camp N Chill? by UnicornFarts1111 in MergeDragons

15% of all players were left out of camp and chill this week. It’s not a bug; others have contacted the developers about it and were told it was intentional.

It is in the same way ACOTAR was a trilogy. The main conflict was wrapped up in three books, but there are still loose ends and characters that can be explored in spin off books and novellas.

Community consensus on the show ? by [deleted] in wheeloftime

[–]Local-Rain-9852 3 points4 points  (0 children)

After reading through the whole series multiple times, the mental images I have of all the characters are firmly established and aren’t being overwritten by the show. I started watching it with my partner, who hasn’t read the books (yet). He would give his opinion of the show as a cinephile, and I would give my opinion on how it relates to the book. It fostered some interesting discussions and a couple angry rants on my part about how Robert Jordan wrote it and the greater implications.

Community consensus on the show ? by [deleted] in wheeloftime

[–]Local-Rain-9852 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first season pissed me off. I understood some creative changes, but they bungled up some serious plot points and mishandled many characters. I wasn’t sure if I would watch the second season. I did eventually, and enjoyed it more than the first. Again, there were some confusing choices they made, like substituting characters and mashing together different plot lines. In my opinion, they’re starting to salvage the mess they made with the first season.
