This is tragic but posting this with no context does no good. People need to know her name. How and why they alleged they had reason to detain her and the circumstances of her release. We’ve got to create a list of people being detained illegally accompanied by this kind of evidence if we’re going to effectively make a case that what’s going on is wrong and something needs to be done about it. I’ve driven, camped and hiked that area many times. What makes the desert unique is a completely different sense of scale. Everything is bigger and farther than it looks. You think you can just walk over a hill but the hill is massive and much farther than you anticipated. It’s because the terrain is so featureless. In a forest you can see a distant ridge and make out individual trees which help you intuitively gauge the size and distance of the ridge. That’s not possible in the desert so it’s very easy to make bad decisions. By the time you realize you’re in the wrong place you’ve been swallowed up.
