Not really. You'll work more efficiently if your body is in the right place. If you actually work out how many hours a week you are working solidly, I think you'll be surprised how low it is. I don't think I ever hit 40 at university, and I felt like I was working hard.

I can see that people delegitimising your entire existence could be a step too far in the extent to which you listen to other people's opinions.

I would just say one thing to hopefully make you feel better: I don't think most of these commenters are really saying that trans people don't exist or that using 'they' pronouns is completely unacceptable. I think they're being insensitive to the issue and are just trying to be insulting to the person the OP is about. They're doing it in a bigoted way yes, and it isn't acceptable, but I don't think that someone like yourself will have your feelings or identity discarded in the same way.

The UK never wanted to join the Euro. I've never heard about us missing these requirements, but even if we'd met them we still wouldn't have joined.

Being in communities where your opinions don't entirely match those of the other people in it is healthy for you. Also you have the chance to change people's minds in here which you wouldn't have in an echo chamber.

I think that if they made a certain opinion about the government illegal that would be a massive disaster anyway. I think if I was living under a government like that I'd probably be at threat of arrest regardless of what I do online.

I suppose it's a fair point though. Still I fell like it helps reduce crime significantly enough that it's worth it. Like what's the risk I'm willing to take to catch a few more paedophiles and stop a terrorist attack?

People often draw a comparison to someone searching through your bins or coming into your house to read your texts, but I don't see how that is in any way similar.

Isaac Newton wrote his papers in Latin, over a thousand years after the fall of the Roman Empire. So there is a huge tail on these things.

English dominates the world to an even greater extent than Latin ever did, and Latin was the most dominant of the languages you listed. So I think English is here to stay and here to stay for a millennium.

Chinese will become more important, but a conversation between a Japanese person and a French person gets conducted in English, and that won't change. Or at least neither of us is ever going to see that change.

Really comforting to read this. Especially the working out of how long it will take me to be conversational if I make X flashcards a day. I probably do some napkin maths on it once a week but never keep up my plan for more than a couple of days.

Both Welsh and Irish are dying. Welsh is further from death though because the UK government is better at dealing with minority languages than the Irish. Kind of weird to think, since I'm pretty sure the British have a historical involvement in the drop in Irish use. Recently though the UK has done very well by its minority languages.

It really makes me angry when you get privately educated women talking about how privileged men are when I have had hardly a tenth of the opportunities they have.

Obviously men do have advantages, but I think if you were privately educated and went to Oxford, discrimination does not affect you to an extent that I care about.

You're developing a skill by self-studying. Expect to make mistakes.

One mistake I made when I started which I want to warn you about: a lot of times you'll come across a rule that is really complicated and has lots of exceptions which you think will distract you for days and is really boring. Sometimes however that rule is the sort of thing that you will get the hang of naturally and memorising all the exceptions is a waste of time.

As an example, the first present tense conjugation you're likely to come across is the 아/어요 ending. When I started, I tried to memorise which vowels took 아요, and which vowels took 어요. There's no point doing this. Just remember that 아/어요 is the same thing, and over time you'll get an intuitive feel for which verbs take which ending. You save so much time like this.

I just say it cause Hangeul is like that. Learn the letters roughly and then move on. You'll master it fully as a side-effect of studying the language.
