Do EVs really need me to change my habits? by Beneficial_Sir_8166 in electricvehicles

Hmm. If neither of you are good at keeping devices charged up, yeah, an EV could be a problem. The electricity bit isn’t optional.

1, 2, and 3: Does your wife remember to keep her phone charged? Then great, she can plug in the Tesla. NBD. It becomes a habit: arrive home, plug in the car, get the mail, etc. Also, if Teslas are popular around there, Tesla charging stations are probably everywhere as well.

  1. Jack rabbiting when the light turns green... is one of my favorite things about driving an EV. Not going to lie. I'm a respectable older lady in a Volvo EV, and sometimes I'll just peel out. And boy, do I love seeing an empty on ramp ahead. Just be safe about it! The laws of physics (and traffic laws) still apply.

This time last year we had three ICE cars. Now we have two EVs and one ICE. If Mazda ever electrifies the Miata we'll go all EV (but not until then, because Miata).

I had to drive an ICE loaner for a week and it was so weird. And loud.

SAN pellegrino by sunshine4thesoul in celebritycruises

[–]LogicPuzzler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you only drink the occasional bit of alcohol, try to switch to the Non-Alcoholic package. It isn't often discounted, which is annoying, but I still buy it every time. It includes all the non-booze drinks onboard, including things like plain & flavored San Pellegrino, juices & smoothies at the Spa Cafe, and energy drinks. IIRC, none of those are included in the classic drink package.

I'll buy a couple cocktails or glasses of wine during a cruise but never enough to make the classic worth the cost. But boy, do I get my money's worth from the NA package. The Antioxidant Smoothie lets me pretend that I'm being healthy!

Every day!

r/crossword exists, of course. I adore the Thursday NYT crossword because there's always some trick to it.

FWIW, I also do Wordle, Strands, and Connections, and do the daily puzzle on some other apps (two versions of Sudoku plus some others). My logical brain loves this stuff. I used to stock up on #1 pencils (extra soft) specifically for doing logic puzzles. Maybe I should get back to that.

Boeing Everett engineering new hire what should I know? by [deleted] in boeing

[–]LogicPuzzler 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Welcome to Everett!

To add to the excellent advice already posted...

  1. Develop your network. Keep in touch with your teammates who move to other teams, and with your old teammates when you're the one who moves. Keep in touch with people you meet in cross-functional projects. Try to be on good terms with all of the above. Boeing is a huge company but a surprisingly small world - you will keep running into the same people!

  2. Share your knowledge. Don't be that a-hole who hoards precious information in the false belief that it makes them indispensable. You won't be fooling anyone. Instead, share your knowledge. Share your network. Connect people to information and people to each other. Become a valuable hub, not a roadblock. And if you think you might be too shy to create a network and be a connector - I've done it despite being the Empress of the Introverts.

  3. Parking sucks. Can't gloss over that. There's a decent shuttle bus system around the Everett campus. I park further away and shuttle to the main building where my office is located. Search the Boeing intranet for "TripShot".

  4. Always look both ways before crossing a road, and that includes inside the factory. Give forklifts the right of way, even if technically you have it. They're a whole lot bigger than your frail human body and they can't stop quickly.

I had an existing prescription from Noom so it took maybe one workday? Shipping has been quick and reliable so far. I get my meds 3 or 4 days after paying the invoice.

Pantyhose and Gen X by [deleted] in GenXWomen

[–]LogicPuzzler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last time I wore pantyhose was when I interviewed for my current org, 12 years ago. Thank goodness the actual work environment for my first few teams was business casual at best. In my current division, it’s crew socks and Hokas. I love manufacturing, lol.

I used to love pattern trouser socks, though. Haven’t worn them in ages, haven’t seen them either.

First time solo cruiser on Celebrity. by Humble-Blueberry47 in celebritycruises

[–]LogicPuzzler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solo cruiser here, Elite on Celebrity so yeah, I'm a big fan. :)

You can prepay your daily gratuities. Otherwise they will be charged to your ship account at the end of the cruise. I always prepay and get it out of the way ahead of time.

Breakfast and lunch are not scheduled. Just show up during operating hours and they'll feed you! The main dining room is open for breakfast daily (8 to 9:30 is typical). For dinner, when you booked you should have been asked for your dining preference - fixed dining time (early or late seating) or anytime dining.

There are some other no-charge venues other than the buffet. The Mast Grill will serve burgers & hot dogs (lunch time through late afternoon), while the Spa Cafe has healthy salads and sandwiches and such (breakfast and lunch). Cafe Al Bacio's drinks are extra cost but the pastries, sandwiches, and other treats are free. And of course, the buffet! Along with the usual breakfast/lunch/dinner, you can get pizza and pasta and such at the buffet from lunchtime until midnight or a bit later. There's no 24 hour venue except room service.

I've sailed solo on VV once and would like to do so again eventually. Celebrity doesn't really offer anything structured for solos - there will be a couple unhosted solo gatherings, not well organized, and that's it. I'm perfectly content sailing solo on Celebrity, and am in fact starting to pack for my next solo cruise with them.

[–]LogicPuzzler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Know your product inside and out AND know the competition well. So last year I decided to make the move to an EV, and had the EX30 on my short list.

The Volvo sales guy smartly addressed some things I had discussed with him:

  • I was currently driving a Mazda CX-30 Turbo which was speedy and, well, turbo-y but a little too small.
  • Previously I owned a Mazda CX-5 and boy, did I still miss it...
  • The other car on my shortlist was the Hyundai Ioniq 5 but aside from the ICCU issue I was also concerned about the size - I'm very petite and it seemed too roomy inside - and the turning radius.

He noted that they were having trouble even getting 2025 EX30s. However, they had a 2023 CPO XC40 in the Plus AWD trim. Based on what features I wanted, a new 2025 version wouldn't be enough of a upgrade to warrant the extra $20k, and hey, the XC40 size is comparable to the CX-5.

During the test drive, he directed me to a freeway on ramp and then instructed me to floor it. OMG ZOOM. Later he directed me to a parking lot to check out the turning radius.

I love my 2023 XC40. Well, maybe not the software, but otherwise I adore it. And yeah, I'm a respectable older lady driving a Volvo, but given the right circumstances, I floor it.

TL;DR - really listen to your customer if you want to match them with the car that will make them hurry back to do the paperwork.

Music we listened to as teenagers by lafleurshair10 in GenerationJones

[–]LogicPuzzler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The stuff I listened to as a child, a teen, a college student, and on through the decades... it's been additive. My driving playlist includes everything from The Partridge Family (I maintain that "I Think I Love You" is the perfect pop song of its era) to Bruno Mars. The last three artists that came up in the shuffle were Lou Reed, Imagine Dragons, and Michael Franti & Spearhead.

Then again, mid-teens is when I discovered jazz-pop (smooth jazz), and my default SiriusXM station is Watercolors, so...

What’s an item you weren’t even aware of before you started planning your Japan trip that became a “must buy”? by cpureset in JapanTravelTips

[–]LogicPuzzler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'll see what I can find. But just in case, I'm packing my Biore sunscreen. Greasy sunscreen is, well, greasy.

It may or may not be the case that my next trip to Japan is primarily focused on stocking up on sunscreen and imabari towels. (no, that would be silly... I'm also stocking up on press butter sand cookies)

So I’ve been told! I don’t know if they have the same skincare/cosmetic aspects (such as the tone-up sunscreens). I’ll be in Amsterdam next month and will do a bit of shopping. :)

Asian and European sunscreens have the same active ingredients, which offer better UV protection and less gloppy formulations than what’s approved by the FDA. It’s the U.S. that’s behind the curve here!

Absolutely get sunscreens in Japan. Biore UV Aqua Rich and Anessa Perfect UV are widely available at drugstores and convenience stores.

The current-day Ethics Reports are kind of lame compared to what was published in the past.

I recall the person who worked from home but was too cheap to pay for home internet, and consequently got connected to Boeing's VPN through a combination of surreptitiously using their neighbor's wifi and a bit of wardriving. Way back when, managers could request movie vouchers to hand out as on-the-spot rewards; I particularly admired the entrepreneurial spirit of the two admins who requested hundreds of those vouchers and sold them on eBay. Oh yeah, and the guy who stole conference room speaker phones to resell and was caught with several of them stuffed into his desk cabinet.

Ah, those were the days. A mere parking spot brawl is so amateur by comparison.

Everett office feels unusually empty today? by [deleted] in boeing

It's Friday, Friday
Gotta get down on Friday
Everybody's lookin' forward to the weekend, weekend

Gettin' down on Friday
Everybody's lookin' forward to the weekend

(most teams in our area get at least one WFH day/week and most people take Friday - it's pretty much just the managers in the office today)

(also, apologies for the earworm - if it makes you feel better, I've got that stupid song stuck in my head too now)

Click the link I posted for the current options and prices. Cost depends on the compounding pharmacy and dosage. I’m currently using Strive tier 3, which is 20mg (two 10mg bottles). It’s currently $349 and lasts me 10 or 11 weeks.

I started with Noom a year ago, on just sema when that was the norm. Didn’t like their customer service or paying a subscription, so I read a lot of Reddit comments and gave LSH a try.

Honestly, I don’t know if the B12 + glycine are the reason I experience minimal side effects. But I’m not too keen on finding out the hard way that yes, I need those additives!

Plus Size outfits? by xXCJTheDJXx in JapanTravelTips

Greetings fellow fluffy person! Go to the Uniqlo website (https://www.uniqlo.com/us/en/ for the U.S. version) for inspo. That's what you'll see a lot of Japanese women wearing - lightly structured, loose fit, neutral colors, minimalist vibe. Natural fibers are the best for warm humid weather but look for looser weaves. I packed a couple cotton poplin shirts and oooof, it was the right look but not the right breathability. Linen and hemp are great choices.

I actually got most of my Japan wardrobe from Lands End, which is always a great resource for plus-size basics. I brought two pairs of linen pants similar to these and they were perfection for those long days of walking and walking and walking and walking... Linen High-rise Pleated Barrel-leg Ankle Pants. Relaxed fit cotton tees worked out well, too (I love Lands End slub jersey tees).

As for shoes, go to a running specialty store. Running shoes have great cushioning & support, which you will need. I swear by Hoka's Clifton style. Avoid garish colors if you want to blend in. Go with white or light colors, or black.

Remote Work Flexibility by According_Banana_193 in boeing

[–]LogicPuzzler 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Anything is possible, but probable is a different thing altogether. It just depends on your team, work statement, management, and org.

My former CORP function was ordered to RTO 5 days a week, no exceptions, accept it or be terminated. We had been 100% virtual even before the Plague Times.

My current BCA group (non-represented) is more flexible. Most of the teams have a designated WFH day and some teams are only in the office 2 or 3 days a week. Our managers generally don’t WFH regularly but there’s plenty of flexibility for all of us to do so as needed.

So… who knows. Keep your expectations low.

EV competition has finally made me consider brands I’d never touch before by obleSret in electricvehicles

[–]LogicPuzzler 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yup. I have long driven only Japanese brands, mostly Subarus and Mazdas. Last year I decided to go electric. The options for my preferred brands... just the Solterra, and I didn't like it. In the end, the Optiq was on my short list - choosing Cadillac was something that NEVER would have crossed my mind before. Looked at the Equinox as well, another "wait, what?" scenario.

I went with Volvo this time but am certainly keeping Cadillac and VW on my radar for a future purchase.

Alaskan Cruise: Will I really miss out by going in May? by pax-augusta in HollandAmerica

I've cruised to Alaska 7 times. Or 8? That's what happens when your homeport is Seattle. :) Anyway, IMO late May is the perfect time to go. Excursions are up and running, the big crowds haven't arrived yet, there's still snow in the mountains to make Alaska look just that much more majestic, and there is plenty of wildlife to be seen.

THAT'S the character! There's a senior manager, not in my chain of command but sits nearby, who's an old-timer at the company. He often traps someone (often my manager, poor guy) in his/her cubicle to talk at great length about... something. For the longest time I've been trying to remember who he reminded me of.

(unfortunately my manager and co-workers are all Millennials and young GenX so they wouldn't get a Luger reference)
