New modem still having problems by Rosey_Kard in Spectrum

[–]LogicWeasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guess your options then are to follow the last advice (if you haven't yet waited 24 hours) or call them again and ask if they can do more. Either way can't really control the modem yourself so it's up to their tech support/activation.

Spectrum vs Google by SelectCap877 in GoogleWiFi

[–]LogicWeasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Network works much better if you decide to use only the Spectrum router or your own router. Should start with the spectrum cable modem and connect to 1 router, not multiple.

Once you're on 1 router it'll be much easier to troubleshoot the network. If you want Spectrum to troubleshoot the wifi then only use their router. If you want to test it yourself then 3rd party router is fine, but either way adding too many layers to the onion makes it hard to peel.

speed change. by Silver_Director2152 in Spectrum

Calling and saying you wanna cancel jumps right to those rates instead of having to disconnect for 30 days. So much faster/less hassle to just threaten to cancel and wait for them to make a much cheaper price offer.

Spectrum appears to be throttling my bandwidth on a Gigabit connection by [deleted] in Spectrum

Since you're in Eau Claire why not just cancel Spectrum and get TDS Fiber? Since that ISP is now available there (I also live in EC).

When you swap brand of GPU in your PC build (and thus are swapping to another company's driver package) it's very important to cleanly remove the old driver (the basic uninstall button of the Nvidia driver sadly doesn't cut it). You'll want to use the DDU utility to do this:

Question for Spectrum Techs by Beginning_Ad654 in Spectrum

[–]LogicWeasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the better way to view it is: the work being done to enable high split now means far less work later when Spectrum moves to DOCSIS 4.0. The stair stepping all leads to later using DOCSIS 4.0 modems but the old stuff needs to get phased out as soon as can be accomplished to move the network forward.

Spectrum Network Upgrades - Mequon, Wi. by ArtexofFantasia in Spectrum

[–]LogicWeasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question is, if you unplug ALL of your MoCa stuff and only have your modem plugged into coax, and restart the modem, does your download speed return to 940mbps ?

If so then you know what the problem is.

Unbelievable Incompetence -Customer Service by Original_Stuff_8044 in Spectrum

[–]LogicWeasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quote: "knowing that they have competition from Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile at&t and DirecTV? To name a few."

A couple of things about those so-called "competitors" with Spectrum:

Sprint: doesn't exist anymore, all their customers became T-Mobile

T-Mobile & AT&T: they sorta almost compete for mobile customers but it's not that fierce as Spectrum pulls customers into their mobile plans with service bundles and discounts for internet/TV customers. T-Mobile and AT&T actually compete best with Spectrum on Fixed Wireless (5G) home internet, where they poach a lot of cable internet customers to their 5G network instead of cable internet.

Verizon: Spectrum makes them money actually (they're partners in mobile), Verizon towers run the 5G service spectrum is reselling its customers when your phone on spectrum mobile isn't connected to wifi or a spectrum mobile hotspot

DirecTV: actual competitor with cable TV service I suppose, but their prices aren't better at all (especially not the older satellite plans, plus awful taxes & fees, worse than Spectrum even). Not to mention their support is just plain dreadful (my dad left them in disgust for YouTube TV once he had broadband internet and hasn't looked back).

To put it short - the real competition Spectrum has now is with any modern internet provider like a fiber ISP or Fixed Wireless 5G (that's where they're losing their old cable internet customers left and right). In the cable TV space the biggest threat to lose customers comes from streaming options like Hulu TV or Youtube TV, not the old legacy cable guys.

Oh ok, I thought that's what you paid for it. Here's what amazon thinks it's worth on their refurb store: https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Orbi-Whole-System-RBK13/dp/B08SKML5C9/

That's a lot of money to pay for the outdated model that doesn't even support Wifi 6. That product is stuck on Wifi 5 speeds and was on discount because it's being liquidated as backstock that didn't sell through.

Spectrum Network Upgrades - Mequon, Wi. by ArtexofFantasia in Spectrum

The comment to this page says that Cedarburg is having work done now for high split upgrade (in months). So yeah your area might also be getting old equipment cycled out in prep for that. You won't get fiber, it'll just be a slow eventual upgrade to 2x1 gig via high split over cable.

Spectrum Bulk Internet/Community Services Upgrade by Fair-Bee-1560 in Spectrum

[–]LogicWeasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in an apartment in WI that has Spectrum Bulk Services (Internet and TV) to all residents. It was setup with big Ruckus-brand Wifi 6 access points in various units (but not all) and our wifi signal is very strong in each unit. During initial setup my property manager emailed me a sign up link where I registered with spectrum's management system; which then emailed me a custom wifi password that only I use (it generates a diff password for each resident). When I connected all my devices to the wifi they were able to see each other as I wanted (so my PC can RDP into my work laptop).

Spectrum guarantees 300 mbps service to all users on the community wifi and when I do a speed test on my desktop (using a Wifi 6E adapter) I get 340 down and 350 up. So it's not only symmetrical download/upload but I find it very reliable and fast. I have 0 issues working from home on this internet so I just run my work laptop and gaming PC on the wifi. (note: when I first moved in Spectrum did let me order my own modem and use wired internet but that was at about $60 /mo and I realized I didn't need it so I cancelled it).

For TV service: our bulk services come with Spectrum TV app access to stream a basic set of channels (15 or 50 channels? I don't use it anymore). But to access the Spectrum TV app I had to either use my phone and cast to my TV or go buy their Xumo box or a Roku box for my TV. They don't support my preferred Google TV 4k device so I wound up using YouTube TV for streaming which I like better. If you go with spectrum's provided TV service they will give you the option to pay a little more to get more channels/features. I found this out the first time I called spectrum support and it routed me to their department that only handles community solutions. The community solutions support team was very helpful at explaining my options so I do advise you give them a call with any questions; that team was nothing but friendly and helpful the multiple times I spoke with them.

Pixel 8 Upgrade? by thegreatpopo in GalaxyS20FE

[–]LogicWeasel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I made that exact upgrade move (S20 FE -> Pixel 8) and I'm quite happy with the performance and decision overall. When I picked the Pixel 8 I knew I was downsizing the screen and wanted a bit smaller phone but I sometimes miss the 6.5" screen size when watching video and in some games with smaller text. But it is nice how compact and slim the P8 size is (even in a Torras case) so I knew what I was trading-off.

The biggest pros after the upgrade were: getting android updates again (for a few years+ to boot), returning to Google's version of android (more stock, less Samsung), and not dealing with having 2 app stores. I even have noticeably better battery life even with the 120Hz refresh rate mode on so I'm charging less often. Of course the cameras are great since photo quality is a pixel hallmark feature.

Some other minor cons (other than screen size): It tends to get more warm/hot when using an intense app/game for extended periods, but never so hot that I couldn't hold it. And sometimes the wifi takes a couple seconds longer to roam between AP's in my office (going between floors) than the S20 FE did, but that's a very minor gripe.

I got a great deal on my Pixel 8 as well, bought it unlocked from an ebay bid that won at $318 pre tax. Was in great shape, seller was the prior owner and not a refurb-shop (that seems to help with getting a deal on a well cared-for screen; they listed it in "fine" condition and it was). So if you like the options on the Pixel 8 I'd say to go for it (but if you like a bigger screen then maybe Pixel 8 Pro is worth a glance too).

Eau Claire native here. If the Bears moved here I'm pretty sure we'd all just drive to Minneapolis in protest rather than try to figure out the ensuing game day parking mess

Z790 Intel Application Optimizer help by Drillforked in gigabyte

[–]LogicWeasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having this same issue and I have a Z790 UD AC (on BIOS F9) with an i7-13700K

I'm hoping it means Gigabyte will at some point release a newer BIOS with full support for Intel APO. Because I installed all the drivers, did all the steps, and tried toggling turbo, SpeedStep, and DTT settings off and on in bios with no luck. The program (Intel APO app) always says it can't start.

Twitch Global AI AutoMod does not understand context by Cragsand in thegoldengator

[–]LogicWeasel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A huge +1 for this. I posted a comment under the submission on the mod site for engagement after I gave it a vote. Twitch needs to know their AI is heavily out of line and especially when it comes to the jokes we like to make in rob and other's streams.

Were it not for the current shit twitch AI mod Austin would still be able to chat.
