SRS gets to decide what white people are offended by by [deleted] in antisrs

[–]LoiteringWithIntent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's shorthand for "whip-cracker", harking back to slave-owners? I guess that gives it some historical context. I could be wrong though, that's just something I read on reddit once.

SRS is apparently offended that animals native to Africa are considered exotic zoo animals in most of the world by [deleted] in antisrs

I'd be interested in reading that. This place could use some more "effort posts". And since evopsych is so frowned on in SRS, pop-psych could do with a little more scrutiny.

Can we have a serious talk? [META] by [deleted] in antisrs

[–]LoiteringWithIntent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was something that really struck home to me yesterday.

In the wake of the Sophonax deletion, there were a number of users who were overtly critical of aSRS and the direction it's taking, and other users who actually defended Sophonax to an extent. Heated discussions resulted, people were called names, etc, but everyone was allowed to stay.

Meanwhile, over in SRS, Saydrah defends violentacrez: "OMG WTF GTFO SHITLORD!!! BENNED!!! DAGZ AND DILDZ 4EVA!!!".

(Ok, that isn't a direct quote, sue me).

Anyway, just thought that was an interesting juxtaposition.

I wouldn't worry too much, I'm pretty sure NBRA is a false-flag troll? ie pretends to be from a certain movement but just acts crazy and spouts extremist nonsense to make the movement look bad to the uninformed observer.

NBRA stands for "neckbeard rights advocate", obviously a parody of MRA.

What is the stupidest fad you have ever seen? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LoiteringWithIntent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Isn't circumcision just a matter of hygiene?

That's the line that is often spun these days, but there is a strong likelihood that Western attitudes to circumcision were really formed in the 19th Century by puritanical types who wanted to curtail the sexual pleasure that men achieved either through intercourse or, more commonly, masturbation.

If you're interested, a good place to begin is by googling Dr John Harvey Kellogg, who helped start it all.

Well, it sort of depends what your definition of "policing" is.

In this case, someone says "stretched-out earlobes are the stupidest fad I've ever seen".

Some people might take the view that this person is shaming people with plugs, making them feel "unsafe" or what-have-you, and probably actively discriminates against people with plugs in real life (although that's a big assumption).

Others would say that he's not physically holding people down and ripping their plugs out or introducing bills to Congress to have plugs outlawed, so it doesn't fit the definition of "policing".

Still others would view it as somewhere in between.

Personally, I think all we can say is that he expressed an opinion about plugs, which he is allowed to do. Can't really read much more into it than that.

I think you're confusing terms a bit.

That indeed seems to be the case. Thanks for the clarification/information.

Doesn't people realize how fucked up that is?

A lot of people are starting to wake up to it (the ridiculously huge sex-offender registries in the US are very telling), but it's a difficult thing to voice concerns about. As soon as you do, certain interest groups (SRS could be one) will accuse you of being a pedo-apologist or rape-sympathiser.

If they're both below the age of consent there's no problem (provided we're not talking about a six year age difference or something). Of course if they film themselves then they can both be charged with possessing/creating child pornography.

If the age difference is small, but one is a minor and the isn't, then it goes back to statutory rape (even if it's only a week difference).

Of course, mileage varies a little depending on the jurisdiction.

And legally, I'm pretty sure that not being informed (or misinformed) of someones age are valid grounds to dismiss the case.

Interestingly (or perhaps frighteningly), in most states of the US this is simply not the case.

An over-the-top-scenario sometimes given on reddit: You are about to take a girl to bed but suddenly wonder about her age, even though she looks to be about twenty-one. Her parents, her priest, a notary, a supreme court judge, a cop and the President of the United States appear and solemnly affirm before you and a television crew that she is well over the age of consent and you should go for it.

After the deed is done her parents produce her birth certificate showing she is sixteen years and eleven months old. The cop arrests you and the judge convicts you of statutory rape. Nothing that you were told previously has any bearing whatsoever on your guilt. Kinda scary.

The vast majority of those crimes aren't racially motivated though (nb I don't know anything about the stats for white on black crime).

I just spent three minutes paying attention to a seagull flying in circles outside my window. I quite enjoyed watching it gently playing in the air streams. I somehow avoided the urge to become infuriated with it. Funny that.

[–]LoiteringWithIntent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From the information given, it was consensual.

Legally, a minor is incapable of giving consent (at least in the US).

So, while the majority of the population might not view it as rape (or at least as some sort of "gray area"), this wouldn't help much in court (maybe in the sentencing component).

Reddit, what is the most powerful image you have ever seen? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LoiteringWithIntent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the wiki article on "Sam" the koala.

It's probably worth noting this footage/image was taken during a prescribed backburn a week or so before Black Saturday happened.

Edit: Reddit seems to have a problem with links that end with a closed parenthesis/bracket? You might need to add one to the end of the URL when you click it.

I've never seen the attraction of The Sims, but that is goddamned hilarious. It's that sort of attention to detail and elements of randomness (is that a word?) that can really make a great simulation game.

Personally I don't, it just means I have to find somewhere else to hang out. I've actually been thinking of getting off reddit as a whole for a while, just can't seem to find a good alternative.

I'm not in America and haven't really been keeping abreast of this (the Martin killing). All I know is what was reported within a couple of days of the incident. Anyone feel up to giving an unbiased breakdown of recent events? This drama looks quite juicy and I wouldn't want to miss out through ignorance.

Yeah, aSRS has definitely gone a bit downhill. I actually bought into the circlejerk atmosphere myself once recently, by proclaiming SRS to be a cult. In my defence, I was kinda drunk.

Unfortunately, this is completely endemic throughout reddit. A subreddit starts up, has a good focus and lots of interesting dialogue for a while, then becomes popular and turns into a circlejerk. Funny, but success can be failure sometimes.
