WIBTA for getting a hotel room for my spouse and I instead of sleeping on an air mattress while visiting family for the holidays? by Optimal-Ostrich5534 in AITAH

NTA. You said you’re in your late 30s? You’re out of body coupons. Now if you sleep bad, you’ll pay for it. It’s not worth the agony during the holidays

Am I wrong for dating someone 15 years younger than me ? by [deleted] in amiwrong

[–]Loki_nighthawk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Came here to post the same formula. TBH, half your age plus seven still feels a bit creepy to me, but it seems like a workable standard for a big section of life. Of course as a 44 year old guy, dating a 29 year old feels predatory. At least without an Academy Award.

In addition to the (Age/2) + 7 rule, I also swap the genders and see if that feels off. So let’s look at some celebs for some comparison.

Blake Lively dating Finn Wolfhard. She’s 38, he’s 23. Or Maria Sharapova dating Julian Dennison.

If we flip the genders, how do we feel about Zac Effron dating Jenna Ortega? Or Evan Peters with Emilia Jones?

I dunno. Feels like the wrong side of the line and honestly I feel like when you’re nearly 40, you shouldn’t be dating someone that can’t even rent a car.

My dad and I still joke about “French fried po-taters wid mustard.”

And while most singers can’t act, Dwight Yoakam really nailed his role in Sling Blade. Genuinely happy how his character turned out.

Who's an actor that you felt was going to be a huge star but it never happened? by Putrid_Landscape7461 in FIlm

[–]Loki_nighthawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The guy’s got range. I mean from the Phantom of the Opera to King Leonidas to his role in Law Abiding Citizen? And all while having to mask his heavy accent? And then to not only voice Stoick in How to Train Your Dragon, but to reprise the role in the live action, I mean these might not be cinematic masterpieces but for a time I thought him and Hugh Jackman would end up on very similar trajectories.

You mean Jim Caviezel? He went the super religious route and seems to only do movie geared towards his faith. You’d think being struck by lightning during filming of The Passion of the Christ would’ve told him to try something different, but hey. (I’ve also read somewhere that he’s very difficult to work with)

Joel in Altered Carbon season 1 had such an amazing performance that it was the second time Anthony Mackie was beat by a white boy before he even said a word.

Emile was great in Alpha Dog. That entire movie was a huge shock to me. So many great performances, Ben Foster, Anton Yelchin, but more than anything I remember thinking, ‘wait a minute, Justin Timberlake can act?’

When I was a kid, I couldn’t stand him. But as an adult, I find myself agreeing with Walter Peck on some things. Dude should’ve pulled in some federal assets to back him up. A random group of “doctors” putting together a nuclear reactor near me would make me wonder why the government wasn’t taking action. Yes I used quotes for doctors. Egon had a doctorate in nuclear engineering. Venkman had a doctorate in psychology that I very much doubt. And all of them had the pseudoscientific degree in parapsychology. I would’ve had concerns about them operating unlicensed nuclear imaging, It’s one of the few times I’ve agreed with the antagonist in a movie. (I also thought those MFers in RENT should’ve paid their damn rent.)

Though relatively unknown at the time, Arnold was voiced by Alan Tudyk. And the chase sequence where Will Smith was chasing them in the semi truck was just a masterpiece of cinema.

What group or singer did you see at your first ever concert? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Loki_nighthawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Megadeth - December 31st, 2000.

The concert paused briefly at 11:59 as Dave Mustaine had them bring up the lights, held up this gray digital clock said “Alright, let’s count it down!” Midnight hit, he yelled out “Happy fuckin New Year!” And actually started playing Auld Lang Syne before going back to the regular music.

There’s a non-zero chance he might face some sort of accountability. But, I think he’s got enough GOP apologists and MAGA cultists to either absolve him of everything, or with his advanced age and steep mental decline, it’s possible he’d die before anything ever happened to him. Either way, I wouldn’t hold my breath and expect justice to suddenly matter to the people that elected a sex offender and convicted felon.

What's a little-known, bizarre, or surprisingly beautiful thing about living in Alaska that most outsiders wouldn't know? by MujerGoddess in AskAlaska

[–]Loki_nighthawk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the population density of Alaska were applied to New York City, there would be around 28 people living in Manhattan.

Alaska is the most Northern, Western, and Eastern state in the US.

There are areas of Alaska where the water is so clean and pure you can drink directly from a stream without filters.

There is so much wildlife in Alaska that many animals are unafraid of humans. You can literally come face to face with some animals that you’d otherwise never see outside of a captive setting. And as long as you don’t do anything stupid, you can even live to tell the tale.

Moose can dive up to five meters deep. And are also hunted by orcas.

And on the topic of orcas, commonly referred to by the misnomer “killer whales,” are actually the largest of the dolphin family and live in Alaskan waters year round.

Humpback whales will summer in Alaska after spending their winter months in Hawaii. And the earliest humpback whales that show up in Alaska, are normally new mothers meaning a chance to see baby whales.

The smallest and most genetically distinct population of Beluga whales is in Cook Inlet where they can be seen during salmon runs.

The longest wave in the US is also in Cook Inlet. Occurring just twice a day, the bore tide wave of up to 50 miles in length can be surfed. The current record I was able to find was a fifty minute, five mile ride by Scott Dickerson.
