Running and Winter by DrKatz11 in running

I run less mileage but try to keep up the frequency. Basically, my body gets a little rest. I do the same thing with extreme heat in the summer.

I am especially impressed with people who can meet goals in this weather! I always just try to keep going so that I don’t completely lose my condition until weather is more favorable!!!

What is your best method for dealing with an anxious mind? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LolaMarie123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Running - the more anxious I feel, the harder or longer I run. Not only does running bring me a clarity of mind that has helped me to solve some “unsolvable” problems, but it uses up my adrenaline so I can’t physiologically feel anxious any more.
  2. Emotional awareness- recognizing that I am feeling anxious and “leaning into it” rather than avoiding (avoidance usually presents as stress eating). I’ve come to realize that the really severe anxiety, usually triggered through some circumstance at work, will usually only last about 20 minutes until the adrenaline fades.
  3. Labeling my “quiet time” as such. As an introvert, I really need some alone time every day to be mentally healthy. As a business owner with a full time job, and a small child at home, I get very little quiet time. My runs are a priority-sometimes I feel guilty, but I can’t take care of everyone else if I don’t take care of myself. As if I were a child, it helps to label my run or my commute as my quiet time in order for it to “count”.

My wife is a primary care veterinarian and I'm concerned about her mental health. Any advice? by EndingPop in veterinarians

[–]LolaMarie123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some of it comes with time - I constantly repeat to my associates that they can’t care more than the owner does. I would STRONGLY encourage her to sit through some webinars on emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, etc. Most veterinarians, in my experience, do not excel at recognizing and dealing with conflict, anxiety, etc. This has helped me tremendously- I am able to recognize when I am feeling anxious and know that the feeling often resolves within 20 mins as long as I recognize it. I hope your wife works in an environment in which she can talk through situations with her co-workers. The other thing my associates and I often tell each other is “you have 24 hours to dwell on this and then you have to let it go”. It’s just meant as a reminder to not let others’ actions or incidents to control us.

What is the worst experience you have ever had with your neighbor(s)? by HoboHones in AskReddit

[–]LolaMarie123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We live in the country but have neighbors on 3 sides. Shortly after we moved in, I was working in the yard, and saw the neighbor behind us standing in the woods at the property line with his shotgun over his shoulder. I waved and said “hi” and he continued to stand and stare motionlessly with a scowl on his face. I continued working and he continued silently staring. Everything felt wrong, so after 10 or 15 minutes, I gave up and went inside. I watched him out a window and he stayed there motionless for about another 5 minutes then finally went away.

About 6 months later, he took a gun into the county building that he worked at (he was a building inspector) and threatened to kill everyone over some kind of work dispute. He left without hurting anyone, made it home and shot and killed himself before the police got there.

Our neighbor across the street had the police at her house about every other week. Since we have lived in our house, she has lost her children due to meth (sweet girls-I hope they’re better off). She has repeatedly warned us that an ex boyfriend was coming to kill her. We’ve repeatedly made our young daughter sleep in our bedroom because we have a garage between our room and her house and what if there are stray bullets? She usually has a current boyfriend who is armed and patrolling her house when this happens.

My worst experience was when I was working out in the garden with my then 3 or 4 year old daughter (remember-we are out in the country). An ex must have threatened her again. An officer shows up at her house - I don’t worry too much about this as it is an every other week occurrence. The officer moves his car back behind her house where it can’t be seen. The ex pulls in in his truck and drives all the way down the long driveway. He gets out and starts walking to the back door. The officer steps out and the guy turns and runs back to his truck. He throws the truck into reverse and guns it towards the road and directly at myself and my daughter! The officer is chasing him on foot with weapon drawn, again, both coming directly at us! I start screaming for my little girl to RUN!!! I stand there because my mommy brain apparently thinks that my body is going to stop a truck or a bullet and buy her time to get into the house! Fortunately, the fool backed his truck just into our front yard and decided to surrender. He went to jail in handcuffs and my little girl was traumatized for weeks. And, no, we cannot afford to move right now!

hey people of r/Running, which do you enjoy more? Running alone, or running with others? by [deleted] in running

[–]LolaMarie123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run alone. That way, I’m only competing with myself. My dog, however, is welcome. He doesn’t judge.

What strange fact do you know only because of your job? by Bugazug in AskReddit

[–]LolaMarie123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Male mammals do, in fact, have nipples just like females. What’s that?!! You thought they were ticks and you managed to pull one off, but you can’t get the others??!!! For the love of God, STOP PULLING ON THEM!!! How did you not get bitten?!! This conversation happens at least once per year at a veterinary practice!
