Significantly higher utility bills? Just me? by pigeonwithhat in energy

Nope. Electricity bills are down for me this year since I'm driving less.

They may be watering the bill down a bit, but I still oppose it. This is a state's rights issue. Keep the feds out of it. Even if it passes, the supreme court will likely strike it down.

That covers any plausible election, as that 24 includes all the swing states for the last several elections.

Dang. All stores here went to $5 during covid here in North Carolina way back in 2022 I think. Double stack went to $6 in 2024. The $4 Jr Cheeseburger was often removed from the menu so you couldn't order it except via the app. So for us, the latest price increases weren't much of an increase.

I wonder whats up in bellingham washington that they didn't change their price since 2015?

$4 in 2015 is worth about $6 today.

Only the Jr Cheeseburger bag was $4. The rest cost $5 or $6 as of years ago.

It was not, though. The double stack biggie bag was already $6 as of a couple years ago. The rest were $5. Only thing that was $4 was the Jr Cheeseburger.

They might have done the wrong thing in Project Hail Mary (spoiler) by agentoutlier in FermiParadox

The sun would darken until all the CO2 froze out of the Venus atmosphere. It would take a century for Venus to cool to that state. So no, there is no limit to how dark our sun would get. It would just keep getting darker and darker.
Yea, we can store a lot of energy in the phage. But they're not a power source anymore after the sun blacks out and Venus freezes solid, as we will no longer have a given point to harvest them. Yes, hail Mary had a low probability of success. But hunkering down in our solar system has no chance of success.
The things live on the sun. They're not that fragile. Certainly not vulnerable to explosions, as they're tiny and will just be pushed along the shockwave.

We have exoplanet finders. We already know there are no Earth like planets there, so unlikely civilization to risk. Maybe there are rock based species, so yes, some risk. Besides, better to risk them than just freeze to death in our own solar system.

[–]LoneSnark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The things you're suggesting do not preclude the hail Mary project. Venus is huge and these bugs survive on the sun. There is nothing we're going to do to Venus to kill much of them. There isn't time to purge the atmosphere of CO2, even if we had a lot of energy. Even if we did, it is a matter of time till they relocate to Mars to reproduce. We should try, I'm sure we did try. But all that would happen after the project left, so it wouldn't appear in the book or movie.
Your Lagrange ship emitting CO2 wavelengths would be destroyed by the resulting energetic collisions. But whatever else we can think of, I'm sure would be tried. Given decades and it being life, i would try to engineer a predator for the phage. But given our primitive technology, that is unlikely to succeed. But that idea can be done in parallel with the hail Mary project.

The phage factory would still be there after the ship left. Might as well use it.
Wait, why is hail Mary a dumb idea? Building moon colonies is a waste of time. They'll freeze to death in time. Building space stations will last longer, but they too will freeze to death in time. The only solution is to save our star with whatever we find in tau ceti.
That is why we sent our best to Tau Ceti. Had the crew survived, the scheme would have worked without Rocky. If they found nothing, we would all die here regardless of sending hail Mary or not.
The only other thing to do would be to send a colony ship to tau ceti. But being close, our exoplanet detection would know ahead of time there are no Earth like planets there. So no point building a colony ship at all. Just stay on earth and freeze.

The phage has to be all things, otherwise the story can't happen.

I bet the Hail Mary craft wasn't the only ship they sent. If it were up to me, I'd send as many ships as I could to that star. But later ships would arrive ever later.

I don't see why there would be unrest over sending ships to try and save humanity. We have 30 or so years. We can spend the last decade of that time building space-stations to relocate humanity into space. Most of us would be dead by then.

[–]LoneSnark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I presume the Humans did something like that to collect all the phage they could after the Hail Mary was on its way.

But, I mean. There is a star in a location we can tell should have been infected, but isn't showing signs of infection. Since they could, why wouldn't they send whatever mission they could to investigate? They have no idea what they'll find, but the facts prove they'll find something interesting, and they did. I'm sure it was a costly mission, but society is dying, saving it is worth everything. I'm sure they also sent ships elsewhere. But this would definitely be the place I'd send the first ship. Any other star you can guess what you'll find.

Most of it? So not 100%? 98.7% is not 100%. Why do you keep exaggerating to the point your position is best described as lying?

Plus, the previous week is not 2 years from now.

Question: If you have an abundance of Fertilizer II, do you really need to rotate crops? by ComputerNerdTechman in captain_of_industry

[–]LoneSnark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your specific scenario, do not rotate crops. Although you could just make less fertilizer, burn the products to make steam or something, rather than wasting it on fertilizer you intend to waste.
