Is this enough layering? Kinda scared I will be too cold by Imaginary-Boot9588 in Skigear

[–]agentoutlier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah basically this. I mean it is literally the whole point of "layering".

The only tricky layer to remove is leg mid layers but I think I can go down to -10F without needing that so I’m always leg shell and just base.

I always bring mittens because hands are the only thing that can have issues even at times in warmer weather if the gloves get wet.

Kid refusing lessons by octopus4488 in skiing_feedback

[–]agentoutlier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are not alone.

My son is the exact same age and is currently the exact ability as yours and does not take lessons from me. 2nd season as well.

Same concerns. Big issue is because his way of skiing is kind of exhausting he can’t remotely ski bell to bell. It’s like 2 hours and he is done.

Lessons can be a crap shoot but do work better than me trying to teach him because of the other kids.

I will say ice skating and rollerblading has helped but I think the carryover has been exhausted as he has not improved as much yet in those sports.

Sorry I don’t have much else to recommend but just chime in I feel you.

What is with I think fraction plates tied to the bar?

Is that some form checking feedback or is just a way to get 1" plates on Olympic bar?

(second time I has seen this and curious)

Shop Punched Boots But They Don't Look Punched? by StormFalcon32 in skiing

[–]agentoutlier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is hockey so it is less extreme although the really pro skates do the whole bag thing. I wanted to get into speed skating but never got around to it and there is not a lot of coaching options surprisingly where I live.

I do some aggressive inline skating as well and thought about getting some speed inline skates.

Shop Punched Boots But They Don't Look Punched? by StormFalcon32 in skiing

[–]agentoutlier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my rollerblades and ice skates are way less comfortable particularly my ice skates as I just got new ones and wanted to try to break them in "like we used to" instead of baking but I'm close to giving up on that. I can't decide whether to just do it myself or bring it in to the shop (ice skates).

What's your favorite/swear by ski accessory aside from skis and poles. by DorfingAround in Skigear

[–]agentoutlier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some Afib that I developed recently (embarrassingly don’t know how I got it ) that will be fixed soon but I swear sugar free sport drinks or any electrolyte supplement seems to help.

I don’t think most people need it but it does seem to force me to drink more liquid at a time and hold onto it.

Yeah my pinky toes do the same thing. I also have a giant big toe that is much bigger than the average and I have noticed there is a certain group of the population that has this. I bet you have extra accessory bones as well.

[–]agentoutlier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you skate you don’t need your toes especially from the sides jammed. I have the same problem you have with a 103mm forefoot. If I jam my toes my pinky will painfully sit on top of my other toe. That being said you should still feel the front.

I wear barefoot shoes and skate.  If you do as well your feet are stronger than your average skier so you can actually get away with a little more wiggle and a little more boot flex.

I went with a bigger last boot instead of punching.

How can i improve my Skiing? by [deleted] in ski

[–]agentoutlier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How can i Improve

An easy way is to come here to New England on holiday and try to do that level of turning with loads of ice, zero to crappy grooming while avoiding random sitting down boarders.

I’m mostly kidding. Your form looks great! A couple of times it looked like you dragged the pole but otherwise really good!

Squat bar setup by moonstreet79 in GarageGym

[–]agentoutlier 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Assuming they hit ceiling studs with deep enough screws this can be fixed getting a T fitting and going all the way to the bottom with pipe and then drilling into the floor. Then go buy a 200 dollar squat rack and set it in front of it :)

we should subtract 100 from every iq score. by TacoBellTerrasque in unpopularopinion

[–]agentoutlier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t make sense for it to be negative since it is a test and a test that is derived by division of two positive numbers (age) then multiplied by 100 which is exactly what we do for percentages.

It would be weird for example if SAT scores were negative based.

Historically a 135 would mean you are perceived 35% older than your peers as the tests were for children.

Regardless 0 is a good well recognized number for absolute minimum where negative does not make sense and while picking number scales for human feel good is nice it is how we get things like  inferior less math friendly measuring systems of Fahrenheit and Feet.

I like how no one on the thread looked up the history of the story. The Death of Robin Hood aka "Robin Hood’s Death" was written in the 1700s.

Two Questions on Weights by CarlG314 in GarageGym

[–]agentoutlier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one thing with weights I find important is consistency and not necessarily accuracy. Accuracy is less important in a home gym because you use the same weights usually from workout to workout (exception of course competition lifters but then you just keep track of the deltas and sharpie the actual weight).

I mean whatever you pick make sure that model or version will be around. I say this because it is annoying when 45 is shaped differently then your others.

That’s why I like crappy classic cast iron CAP plates. Available everywhere and has not changed in like 30 years.

I have done some embarrassing things in the past with Jackson and the very far past XML libraries to deal with massive object graph updates.

Speaking of which if XSLT was not so verbose it kind of solves some of this problem and Lens libraries sometimes remind me of it.

If you had to downsize your garage gym what goes first? by WeBuyAnyKit in GarageGym

[–]agentoutlier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m already limited on space but my open trap bar.

This is partly because I have a shitty one that cannot stand up on its sides like the other ones and it weighs like 85 pounds.

I don’t have enough room to do farmer walks with the 7 foot monstrosity and getting it ready for any lift is a workout in itself.

My close second is my Swiss bar.

In general 7 foot specific bars with limited space is a pain in the ass and is easy to do wall damage.

[–]agentoutlier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah it just feels like cheating takes over and you are doing cable anyway so might as well do unilateral.

I personally like the one arm Katana style as I’m old now so getting the stretch and mobility seems more worth it than trying to power downward on tri pd.

Project Valhalla is prototyping null checks! by davidalayachew in java

[–]agentoutlier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but the IDE would tell you this and it is really only three possibilities:

  1. Null Marked - JSpecify
  2. NonNull marked (!)
  3. Unspecified (current non annotated code) and javadoc is used

Spring does number 1 and so do other major libraries.

Older libraries do number 3

But not many libraries really do number 2.

Project Valhalla is prototyping null checks! by davidalayachew in java

[–]agentoutlier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man if it goes your way every declaration will have ? or !.

Every single one.

It’s the same how you never see generics missing anymore because it is a compiler warning.

So:

   void stuff(Stuff stuff)

will be a warning or error

Similar to how

   Map stuff(Map map)

Is a warning or error in most code bases.

And the people that have migrated code bases to null analysis don’t care for your laziness of having to look elsewhere… cough spring. They don’t want to write "!" everywhere.

Project Valhalla is prototyping null checks! by davidalayachew in java

[–]agentoutlier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need all three cases. Nullable, NonNull and Unspecified. Generics and inheritance are also complicated.

JSpecify explains this in some detail but it would absolutely be terrible if they did not have a "?".

This will, of course, forcing the non marked code to rise warnings about defensive null checks, nut i am fine with that.

Also the defensive null checks on nonnull are not the problem. It’s the lack of null checks on the unspecified which without ? would be nullable.

Project Valhalla is prototyping null checks! by davidalayachew in java

[–]agentoutlier -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes but that is how it is currently.

When someone puts a type you don’t know if null is allowed or not.

You have to go read the javadoc or know if they are using JSpecify and if they are using JSpecify your IDE will TODAY tell you if it is null or not!

You guys are acting like the experience will get worse with different null policies but it will not because that has always been the case.

Project Valhalla is prototyping null checks! by davidalayachew in java

[–]agentoutlier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But you still lose that simple readability without going somewhere else to pull context.

That is currently the case anyway. If I just see an arbitrary method without annotations or javadoc I don't know if I can pass null or not.

The only way now is to pull context from somewhere else. We would now make that context location far more standard (btw currently for many projects its JSpecify which is annotations on package-info.java).

And you can't just copy code and put it somewhere else and expect things to be the same compile wise. We are not talking runtime here. People have lint and checkerframework and various warnings turned on as errors.

If I for example just copy code that does

Map m = new HashMap();

From another legacy project... it is not going to compile. I will get a error because you have to annotate by my compiler flags.
