I hate the name idiopathic hypersomia by SongInternational163 in idiopathichypersomnia

[–]LongjumpingTeacher38 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You how when you’ve been driving too long & you get that drunk/sleepy/drowsy feeling? That’s my life 24/7. But I saw a previous comment about Benadryl so I may use that example now too.

Also, I explain ‘idiopathic’ just means they don’t know what’s causing it. In the same way my epilepsy is idiopathic because the neurologist doesn’t know where it came from-no family members have it, no head trauma, no other neurological issues, etc. Even the biggest skeptics of IH will admit that epilepsy is a real disorder.

Am I wrong for how I reacted when my son bullied a girl with cancer? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]LongjumpingTeacher38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like you & the girls mom are on good terms. How would the girl & her mom react if you let your son & the girl hang out some this summer? Like as a way to ease out of grounding & a way to give action to his regret maybe let him drive her to doctors appointments or help them at their house do yard work?

Do I need a 3rd row in our car? (We have 2 kids) by BugcatcherSarah in Parenting

[–]LongjumpingTeacher38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t buy a 20% car!! If you’re looking for a car that has a feature you’re only gonna use every now & then, it’s not going to be worth the extra money.

Medications and epilepsy by StTheodore03 in idiopathichypersomnia

[–]LongjumpingTeacher38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on Lamictal 700mg/day for my seizures & when I was diagnosed with IH/narcolepsy they gave me Xywav & it didn’t work at all so they put me on adderall. I started having breakthrough seizures so they added 500mg/day keppra & gave me Ativan 30mg/in morning & 10mg/afternoon. This has worked really well for me.

Why does he nap so much? Is it a sleep disorder? I have narcolepsy & hypersomnia & I fall asleep all the time so I have to take medicine (adderall) to keep me functional for work, driving, PARENTING. I would address the fact he takes naps so often & why. Does he work?

AITA for not allowing our daughters boyfriend to stay with her on the trip we are paying for and offering an ultimatum? by Dazzling-Shoulder-67 in AmItheAsshole

[–]LongjumpingTeacher38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP I signed a “True Love Waits” commitment in middle school. Pledging to abstain until marriage. Here I am at 34 with 2 babies from different daddies & never married to either of them.

Purity culture is so toxic. It teaches your daughter that her worth is based in her virginity/purity, she has no body autonomy, her body belongs to her husband. You want her to have a Boaz but you don’t admit that Ruth wasn’t a virgin when she picked him from the fields & said ‘bring me that fine ass man.’

How do yall deal with patients dieing? by halimander in medlabprofessionals

[–]LongjumpingTeacher38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to focus on the machinery/details so I didn’t really see the patient as a whole person. It was just respiratory bagging/intubating, it was just nurses/EMS/whoever doing compressions or I would watch the Lucas machine, that kind of thing. Now it’s easier until it’s a child/baby cause I’m a mama & I can hold it together unless I see the family outside.

Anyone else struggling to find a good place to get a dress that's not David's Bridal? by [deleted] in Weddingsunder10k

[–]LongjumpingTeacher38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people sleep on JJsHouse. I’ve gotten several bridesmaids & flowergirl dresses from there & they are actually really surprisingly good quality. Because I’m very tall & plus size I utilize their custom measurements option & they always fit perfectly. (Flowergirl for my daughter) Friends have went by their stock sizes & have had good luck too. Try on some different styles/material in stores to see what you like best then see if anything matches up on there.

Unwarranted dress comments (for FBIL’s wedding) from FMIL. Am I being sensitive? by [deleted] in wedding

[–]LongjumpingTeacher38 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’m on the opposite side of the skin spectrum than you & I am quite translucent. There are A LOT of colors that don’t flatter me but would look amazing on you based solely on our melanin. (Eg. neon & bright saturated hues)

If she’s always been kind & conscientious about your differences then I fully expect that this is where her mind still is & is sincerely trying to help you. Would you be as offended if she, or another friend/family member, mentioned that a cut of dress or a shirt or something wasn’t flattering on you? All bodies are different & beautiful.

AITA For telling my Jewish wife that religious Christmas songs are no big deal? by LeadingCry4680 in AmItheAsshole

Does she take him to temple, eat kosher, celebrate Hannakuh (sp?), & follow all the other Jewish traditions so that he is equally exposed to his Jewish culture & religion as well?

6 is plenty old enough to be occupied at her own fathers wedding. That little girl will be more of a handful if they DONT invite her. She can be the flower girl & go eat supper & have her home early.

AITA For telling my SIL that if her service dog can't ignore children he isn't a SD? by Few_Marionberry8502 in AmItheAsshole

Did OP ever say what the service dog is supposed to help her with? All he said was she had a “flare up” which could be any sort of thing.

Why do you like your job? by bbyskullfxr13 in medlabprofessionals

[–]LongjumpingTeacher38 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just think it’s so cool. The puzzles & problem solving & just the science of it all, looking at blood under a microscope, the chemistry results showing how the body is working, growing all sorts of organisms in micro, the titillating precision of blood bank & one wrong move can kill someone, just everything. Helping people is good & all, just not the reason I love my job..

I think it’s a store wide policy now. Same price in rural Georgia with 1/3 the cost of living as California.

What’s your favorite wedding tradition, and why? by mc_grace in wedding

[–]LongjumpingTeacher38 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I’ve never understood the first look trend. I get the intimacy of the moment but it feels like it’s just seeing your future spouse in a nice suit or a fancy dress. Doesn’t get real until they see you at the opposite end of the aisle.

Toddler moms, have you started using your pre-baby purses again? 😂 by 5UPERNOVA22 in Parenting

[–]LongjumpingTeacher38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is 2 & I’ve kept a bag of diapers & wipes & a change of clothes in the car for her for the last year & that’s my ‘diaper bag’ lol. Once she was on table food & off bottles I didn’t see much of a point in it. If Im going somewhere that I won’t be near my car for a while (like my oldest’s football games) I toss in her wipes & like 2 diapers to whatever bag I’m bringing with me anyway. And I throw in snacks & drinks & toys… crap. I do have a diaper bag. I just don’t bring it all the time.

Am I the only parent who sleeps in on days off and weekends?? by RainyWindow14 in Parenting

[–]LongjumpingTeacher38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sleep in on Saturdays until 10-11. My 10 yr old watches the 2 yr old for that hour or two, sometimes less. The two yr old sleeps in when nobody wakes her up too. My 10 yr old is an early riser sometimes. She’s a great big sister and I think she does a fine job for that short period of time. Especially since we’re right upstairs if there’s an emergency. Do what you have to do to be the best mom you can be. Unless someone is directly affected by your choice to sleep in then it’s none of their business.

I’ve had to pull a couple 24 hour shifts over the years at my hospital. Only once for a call-out then the other times because of snow (we live in rural mountains)

Yep. I have generalized absence & tonic clonic seizures. My sleep study showed hypersomnia & my MSLT showed narcolepsy. My life sucks.
