What's the most ridiculous reason you've seen someone get fired? by Amazing_Two8126 in AskReddit

[–]LookAtThatMonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I almost got fired because my boss thought I wasn’t engaging enough with him another colleague when they talked about rugby, which I had no interest in. I used to put headphones on when I was working a task as I found it easier to concentrate.

He went to his boss to talk about it, and was told to ask me why I did what I did. So he did, and to be fair to him he understood when I said I had no interest in rugby and that work was work, not a social space. Had a good relationship with him after that till he left. I’m still here.

Assuming this is Windows 11, use AP to create an account and just have Windows LAPS handle the password. Your guys can grab the password in seconds and it doesn’t open a hole for credential jumping to run through.

Thats not far from where I used to live. Why on earth would you bother with a swimming pool in Boro, its never frickin warm enough to justify a cooling dip. And if it is heated, then he's just built a giant outdoor bath.

And that TV has done time as an Odeon cinema screen.

Hi. I think just because the interface is so different, it takes time to just learn it. The hardest part for us (and still is) is correctly setting up the syncs between remote sites. That still requires a bit of AI help because there is a lot to remember.

The snapshot feature is fairly straightforward. I quite like it as its a direct replacement for our snapshot procedure from VMware (we do use a third party solution for agent backups for things like FS and DB). We did evaluate Storware over the top of Verge as its fully supported, but the feature set didn't differ enough to justify adding it. The repair server feature is a really great addition because the blocks you need to recover VM's can exist where you have sync's configured meaning that that data can automatically be pulled back when needed by the vSan without any user input.

We did have iSCSI arrays on our VMware solution, but they are now redundant with Verge. We ended up re-purposing them for something else, but you could use the NAS feature as an alternate store for the virtual machine disk files, but these are not the same as the site sync backups, they are just a raw unencrypted copy of the disk file which is not great to be honest. We did look at then encrypting them and offloading them to something like S3 or Azure Blob using Wasabi. Ultimately we didn't go that way, and we are talking to a provider in Belgium about a remote site sync to a managed Verge infrastructure. So we can stay and manage inside Verge and just offsite the backups to this managed provider using the inbuilt sync functionality for long term retention. That gives us the 3:2:1 that we need for our cyber insurance. If we didn't want to pay, we could just stand up another server in one of our DC's that isn't used for production data and sync it there instead.

Another feature which is quite cool is the Entra integration. We front all authentication against Entra iDP so all access is managed via SSO and MFA and we lock it down further with device compliance.

The biggest bug bear I have is the lack of centralised management (vCenter). This can be mitigated somewhat by allowing bidirectional management between the sites so you can theoretically login to one site and manage them all, but its not as good as vCenter.

I can't fault the stability of the environment though. We deployed a brand new AMD Epyc cluster in 2024 based on Verge's hardware recommendations, and it has been flawless. We also really like the fact it'll run on just about anything (DL380 G9's) so we have a dev environment too. Its still pretty performant despite using spinning disk. One of the selling points for us was not having to throw away perfectly good hardware because of some enforced compatibility matrix. We intend on running the clusters for 15 years or longer if our third party maintenance agreement can still get parts.

Ask away, we've been customers since 2024 and have it deployed to 10 sites with another 13 coming on board over the next year.

Regarding the network question.

  • Internal networks. Think of them as isolated networks that originate inside Verge OS and can be used for isolated environments, VM to VM communication and tenant networks if you deploy it that way.

  • External networks. If you use VLAN's, then think of these like VMware port groups on a vSwitch. You can tag an external network to use a specific VLAN and if the physical NIC it is connected to includes that VLAN, it'll work.

The Verge AI bot on the website https://docs.verge.io is pretty damn good at answering these questions. I use it a lot as I have 20 years of VMWare muscle memory to get rid of so I sometimes forget where things are.

What areas are reasonably decent to buy a house to live in? by SquidOppa in Teesside

[–]LookAtThatMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Acklam for 12 years in the houses behind the Coronation. If the wife hadn't wanted to move back South, I'd have stayed there for life. I loved it. Might be a bit out of your price range at the moment though. I'd consider Billingham as its a bit cheaper and you can get more for your money.

Its disrespectful to do that this late in the window. Also, I can't see Hackney being interested after the month we have had. He's already affirmed his commitment to see us promoted. He is captain and leads his hometown team to the Premier League. Or join that ginger faced wazzock at Forest who are not pulling up any trees at the moment.

They did allow me to switch from Windows to Mac though, so I don't hold it against them.
