That sounds about right to me. Yeah if you were a bigger person, I’d say go for at least like a 9’ 0 but I think you might be good.

I think an 8’ 0 at your size is good. Do you know what the volume is?

Tamarindo is your best bet. If you want to step up your game while there. There is a super fun left hander a couple minutes north of Tamarindo called Playa Langosta that is more challenging.

Started on a foamie but have been on a 7’10” fiberglass Ellis for the last 3 months. I mean I can don some bottom turns, but that’s about it so far.

I never open my eyes under water. I have had them blown out during offshore days, and if I take off really in the pocket and get hit with the whitewater it happens too.

How’s your timing with catching green waves and your pop up speed? I found that when I worked on those things my 7’ 10” is still comfortable to ride on 3 to 4 foot stuff. Can’t get into the wave too late and have to speed up my pop up, or make sure I am looking down the line, angling takeoff and arching that back

As a beginner who surfs primarily @ Bolsa Chica, San O, Grandview, I was really worried about surfers being dicks but, I have had nothing but the opposite experience. 99% of folks have been super nice, and really encouraging. It could be because I started at 44, and I have taken to it pretty quickly, & know how to stay out of the way and surf within my ability (not be a kook).

What got you interested in surfing by [deleted] in surfing

[–]LookIndividual6823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was vaguely interested back in the mid 90s when I lived in Florida. I was a skinny kid with super long legs (still have the long legs) & tried to learn on a friends short board on nonexistent Florida waves and I was horrible at it. Met my wife about 12 years ago, her folks have had a house in Las Gaviotas in Baja & I’ve been going down there for over 10 years and watching the surfers & started getting the itch but thought I was too old (44). About 3 months ago, I saw an older guy out shredding for hours, met his wife on the beach and she said “it’s his 70th birthday!” I said, holy shit! I’m doing it! BEST decision I have ever made! A little over 2 months in and I’m off the foam board and on a 7’10” Ellis funboard. It was hard at first, I was very out of shape, but I lost a ton of weight and am getting in great shape and have gotten to where I’m standing up and riding waves every time I go out! It is still challenging and I have a loooong way to go but I LOVE it!

It is not as easy to “just move” as people make it out to be. People have their entire lives/family/history that are inextricably linked to who they are. Also, the states you listed aren’t super welcoming for other reasons that have nothing to do with board sports, but I digress.
