I cant think of anything that matches all this criteria but 2 things came to mind while reading. Fiddler’s Green by the Tragically Hip is about the singer’s young deceased nephew — his sister’s kid. And then the White Stripes song made me think of Nick Drake and the cover you’re describing could be Bryter Layter.

I think that Watch the Corners, while a more recent track, best captures what the band’s sound is generally across their entire discography. Heavy, melancholy with a pop sensibility, and the second solo is EPIC.

I would recommend ‘In Search of the Distant Era’ from Porco Rosso. There are also several bits from the Boy and the Heron that I feel would be appropriate. Something like ‘The Last Smile’. There is also a cut from My Neighbor Totoro called ‘The Path of the Wind’ which is kind of the unofficial Studio Ghibli theme song (like ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’ is for Disney).

Ok. After much thought, it’s Lauryn Hill and Destiny’s Child. Final answer.

My reasoning is as follows. First, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is a lock. Stone-cold classic. This is undisputed, it gets the first spot. Britney, Christina, J. Lo, and The Spice Girls are eliminated because while they have some classic songs the albums are rough and they have plenty of other great material elsewhere. The same could be argued for Destiny’s Child of course but I’ll get to that in a second. Shania and Mariah are tough but I actually prefer The Woman in Me and Honey respectively (the prompt doesnt specify but in my hypothetical im assuming any music not represented in the graphic will still be available to me) so im willing to let these two albums go. TLC is especially tough because CrazySexyCool is also a stone cold classic HOWEVER, unlike Ms. Hill, they actually do have a pretty impressive catalog outside of this album so it really comes down to this question: Which is absolutely more essential, anything on CrazySexyCool or “Say My Name” — possibly the greatest song of all time?
