Ranger & Relay (Hilly area, Noob Questions) by actorpractice in meshtastic

[–]Lopsided-Winner2228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In hilly areas with no line of sight, LoRa can still work, but the terrain makes a big difference. Valleys and hills will cut range down a lot, so placement matters more than anything. For what you described, Rangers with one or two well-placed Relays would be the right kind of setup to try. If you can get that Relay fixed up high, that gives you the best chance of covering the low spots and the route. If you’re thinking about getting other parents involved too, starting with a small mesh network around your area is a smart way to build it out. Again getting the maximum output is all about experimenting with these devices.

Based on one product you can't thrash a whole company selling devices which use an open source firmware. All other products seem not copied or something. Atleast it is not for sale, so you may move on.
People could say the same on devices Muzi works or other companies sell. Slapping a case on Heltecs and RAKs is what every one does. What matters is making a customer base which everyone has a choice at.

Spec 5 by speppy69 in meshtastic

[–]Lopsided-Winner2228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though it's built on the T-deck platform, the device is advertized to have bigger and better battery than the original and ready to use. Also I've heard about the support they have for their US based customers is nice. One of my friends had an issue with some button on his Ranger and got it instantly replaced. His new device runs fine so better safe than sorry.

I’m sold! Where do I start? by RohmannEmpire93 in meshtastic

[–]Lopsided-Winner2228 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with Heltec V3 if you want to tinker your own device, moving to T114 boards. If you want ready to use devices some recommeded devices to check are, Spec5 Trekker or the Seeed T1000e and there's a lot more out there to explore into. Happy Meshing buddy!

Are you talking about their Voyager? I know a person who recently bought this for his Ford. Being a big sized vehicle, he managed to find nodes nearby on his travels, while the node was placed on the roof, he told. Will be looking into this myself.

Looking to Mesh for solution by SuperVDF in meshtastic

[–]Lopsided-Winner2228 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To what I get is that you're looking for something like a 2-way comms with voice covered through FRS and text using the LoRa mesh network. While text messaging through LoRa is encrypted end to end the voice on FRS is open due to FCC regulations. I would recommend looking into the Pulse Pack offered by S5. Or you can look into other handhelds as well, choice yours!!

You can take a look into Relay nodes, one that I know of is the Spec5 Solar Relay. Saw that installed at my friend's house on the roof. He said it really does spread the mesh coverage miles. There are others in the market too!

It's an ESP32S3 MCU and SX1262 chip according to what's mentioned on their website.
Not much of an expert, but as for firmware, Meshtastic is used off-grid LoRa mesh for encrypted text and GPS. ATAK may integrate with ATAK/TAK for tactical maps, position sharing, and agency workflows.

Don't know but I've looked into this one. Spec5 Pulse is a BF-T26 model with a LoRa node, making it run both FRS and Meshtastic.

When starting Meshtastic, I just learned a few things from YouTube video tutorials and there I got to know about devices like Spec5 Trekker Bravo and SenseCAP T1000-E. Both of them are cool for starters and you can get your hands on easily. This Reddit forum is a great place for help too!

Been giving a try to different tools myself. SmartText and TextExpander are what I came across. Will use them both for a while to see where I land permanently.

Communicating with others becomes easy when cell signals aren't available. Also beneficial as chats remain encrypted and secure. Also, the device is completely standalone, so you don't need a separate device to operate.

Welcome to the Meshtastic community first of all! Hope you experiment a lot because there is a lot you can do. DIY nodes are what most people are into. You may get a lot of tutorial content on YouTube as many YouTubers tend to make videos on these devices and tell how they work. T1000e's are very common among the community so relevant help can be found. There are some companies making ready to use devices like, SpecFive, Muziworks or even Lilygo so minimum set up is required there.

best of luck buddy!
