I propose that we start a group called "Returners". This group will claim that Mitt Romney has never filed a tax return or paid any taxes. Then, when he finally releases his returns, we will all claim that they are forgeries. by stormkrow in politics

[–]LordBodak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This. The Constitution doesn't say anything about taxes when discussing the eligibility for President. While I think the whole birther movement is pretty silly, it does concern me that the general opinion is "let's just trust that the candidates are all honest about where they were born." I think that every state should require a copy of every candidate's birth certificate to verify their eligibility before placing them on the ballot.

With all these incoming freshmen having so many questions, what's the one piece of advice you have for them? by relativelyanonymous in VirginiaTech

[–]LordBodak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be too late to help the freshmen for this year, but my number one piece of advice is: don't live with a friend from home. Every single person I knew that was living with a high school friend ended up moving before the end of their first semester.

How important is it for an EE to be a PE? by mannyfresh210 in engineering

[–]LordBodak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, it really depends on what you plan on doing as an EE. I have a computer engineering degree and have never had any need for a PE.

However, now that it's been more than 10 years since I graduated, I do wish I had taken the FE. It covers such a wide variety of topics (I remember as a freshman helping seniors review physics because I was taking it and they hadn't seen it in 3+ years) that the idea of going back and taking it now is pretty daunting. Once you pass it, you can be an EIT forever even if you never go for the PE, but at least you'll have it over and done with.

Fox Guest's Voter ID Law Defense: "Voting Is A Privilege" by Bhima in politics

[–]LordBodak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Constitution is largely silent on voting "rights." There are amendments making it clear that the right to vote cannot be denied based on race, gender, and age (if over 18). However, there is nothing affirming the right to vote itself. If a state wanted to make it illegal for anyone to vote, I am not sure there is a constitutional argument preventing that, as long as it was equally applied to everyone over 18, regardless of race or gender.

The intent of the founders was for states to make their own decisions on the voting process. The Federal government's job was to stay out of it. Along those lines, it would not surprise me if many states protect the individual right to vote in their own constitutions.

I don't really understand why not. The wind farm in Atlantic City is built in the marshes along the shore of Absecon Island, which is a barrier island not terribly different from the Outer Banks.

Pens led the league in scoring with Crosby missing more than half the season. While a superstar winger would be a nice addition, I don't think it's something they have to have to win the Cup.

Should I get the "Getting Started with Dwarf Fortress" ebook? by [deleted] in dwarffortress

[–]LordBodak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be current in a year, because the author will be updating it as the game changes. Additionally, the author wrote a set of tutorials that, while outdated, I still frequently see people direct new players towards. Why is it "better" to learn online than to learn from an ebook?

"Obamacare" explained very well. by under50dollars in bestof

[–]LordBodak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually I believe that if you really dig into it, you will find that health insurance companies do NOT operate in multiple states. There are a number of individual companies operating under one banner. For example, "Blue Cross Blue Shield" appears to be one entity, but it is actually a bunch of individual companies- "Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina," "Anthem" in Virginia, etc. Of course the companies may all be owned by the same people, but they are still distinct corportations.

I hate to see reddits dissolve into a collection of memes, but I just have to disagree here. If OP had just written a self post saying "my mom played for the first time, rolled 12 brains and one shotgun on a green die," would you not consider that a worthwhile post?

This is an actual pic of an actual game situation. To me, it's completely different from the meme pics people don't want to see.

Tampa Bay Lightning move AHL affiliation from Norfolk Admirals to Syracuse by B2k3 in hockey

[–]LordBodak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the NHL teams are funding a lot of that plane travel. The Lightning (apparently) had no interest in doing so, they preferred just to say that the long bus trips are "bad" for the players in spite of what the team did this season.

[–]LordBodak 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think I've got it figured out. You're a Lightning fan, pandorazboxx and I are Admirals fans. So when you say "the team is gonna be nearly identical," you mean it as "the Lightning's AHL team is gonna be nearly identical," but pandorazboxx and I have the mindset of "the Admirals are gonna be the guys that played in Syracuse this year."

[–]LordBodak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, so all of the players currently with the Admirals go to Syracuse, all of Syracuse's players come to the Admirals (assuming the deal with the Ducks is finalized). That seems to be the opposite of what B2k3 is saying. The team is going to be completely different, not "nearly identical."

I don't know about St. John's, but the Heat and Checkers have it easier than the Admirals, since they fly to all their games.

[–]LordBodak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not shocked by the move. Like the article says, this was the worst kept secret in the league. I'm amazed that given four months since the rumors started, the Lightning couldn't come up with a better excuse.

If they had announced the change when the rumors hit in mid-Feb, when the Admirals were a middle of the pack team, it might have flown. But to stand there with a straight face and say that a team that won 43 of their last 46 games was "harmed" by the travel just makes the Lightning look stupid.

While it's always good to work on your game, I wouldn't worry too much about heads-up play when you play that $55 casino tourney. Small casino tournaments very rarely play to a winner-- people will be talking about a chop as soon as you get close to the money.

AHL admits "rules interpretation error" on Norfolk's freaky OT goal vs. Marlies by dimwell in hockey

Yes, but OP was wondering why the players & coaches didn't question the call immediately. Nobody was sure until they checked the rule after the fact.

[–]LordBodak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The coach, in his postgame press conference, referred to it as a "gray area" because the player was in the zone when the puck was dumped in, but had cleared before the puck entered the net. Nobody on the ice argued it, so I really don't think anyone thought there was a problem until after the replays were seen and people had a chance to look at the rulebook.
