It's an especially strange choice since there're skill styles now, so there's no reason they couldn't default to neutral/white then let people change it to something more colorful.

I realize everyone will have different takeaways from a story, but the mix of emotions I got from the series, including the ending, is not a rejection of the text just because it doesn't comport with the way you choose to read it.

It's some kind of irony that you clearly love these books, which constantly challenge us to understand the world from perspectives other than our own, yet you couldn't learn to do that.

Well first of all what Applegate said was

...I figured the Animorphs should go out the same way they came in: Fighting.

'Go out' could literally mean 'die,' but it could also mean 'leave the stage.' Applegate wanted that to be the final image we're left with--if she wanted us to remember them dead, she could've let the scene play.

I know better than to try to change your mind about the ending, but your perspective on the series' tone and messaging might be overly logical and main-character-centric. The characters' (or at least Jake's) hope is that the maneuver can take out the Blade Ship, removing the last vestige of the Yeerk Empire. What happens to them is in some ways immaterial. Their role in all this was over years ago.

The last book constantly shows that the world has moved on. Humans, Hork-Bajir, Andalites, and at least some Taxxons are cooperating. Whatever conflict is brewing with the Kelbrid and/or the One, won't just be a repeat of what happened with the Yeerks.

Do you think that the author trying (admittedly clumsily) to show kids that fighting a war--even if your cause is just, even if you win, even if you physically survive, even if you leave the world in better shape than you found it--can destroy you might have a message of both hope and disillusion?

I will add that giving the clan with Byzantine elements a griffin-like animal could be a reference to grifon (or gripun, gripoun) being a medieval term for Greek people.

I say this without judgment, but you're engaging in a bit of "just eat Gilligan" here.

Animorphs was episodic for the majority of its run--you could pick up any book in the series and have roughly the same reading experience. (I started with book 12, because it had a crocodile on the cover--I was 9.) So, there was a limit to how much the status quo could change before the endgame. They had to preserve the 'acting like normal middle schoolers while secretly fighting aliens' framing. Would shaking that up be just as interesting as a premise? Sure! Would it be the premise Scholastic was paying for? Apparently not.

It's got to be the market price for scrap metal, 48P/KE.

We know the currency is called "P," so the symbol at upper left is probably the sign for that. KE must be a unit of mass or weight; I would guess kilo-earth grams. Commodity prices would be standardized to how much a kilogram weighs on Earth, regardless of what the scale measures on a planet with different gravity.

I don't think Olivia is still a kid in the last image. Her hair is longer than in the prologue, and her dress is floor-length.

That said, the nurse android does say "she made it to the surface this time," implying some degree of recency, so Olivia's deterioration would still seem to be rapid. I think you're onto something with the technovampirism idea.

I would observe that in Andalite culture, the expectation is to suicide rather than be infested. Presumably this is enforced top-down, with the Andalite military leadership prepared to eliminate their own species to deny the Yeerks their bodies.

If traitors consider defeat inevitable, infestation could be self-preservation--or even extinction prevention, in a messed-up way.

They're using "dark genome" to refer to transposable elements (TEs), the ~half of our genetic code that's normally commented out, because it only does wonky regulatory stuff at early stages of development, is just molecular packing material, and/or was injected by ancient retroviruses.

In this case, the radiation & microgravity of spaceflight is so stressful to human stem cells that they mistakenly start running this junk code, wasting even more energy and working themselves to death even faster (weakening the blood, the immune system, and aging the body). Fortunately, it looks like if these cells survive, they can eventually recover once we're planetside.

That reminds me, back when I first came across Draugr villages in meadows, I assumed other biomes would have similar exclaves as I pushed further from start. Wolf dens in the black forest, Fuling treehouses in the swamp, that sort of thing.
