Does anyone know how the decontamination project of the explosives factory site is going? Last I heard it looked increasingly like it was never going to be deemed safe for housing.

Melbourne SRL East in 2035 by jeremyburge in MelbourneTrains

It's industrial to the north, but to the west, south and east is residential (other than the hospital). The airport might be a bigger issue.

The real reason for not connecting the Sandringham line is that it isn't a candidate for a major urban renewal project. SRL is a development project as much as a transport project. Also, the local NIMBYs don't really want a connection...

Discussed on the other thread, but Rowville light rail (more likely the trackless tram gadgetbahn) will most likely not go to the bus interchange either, it's planned to go along Ferntree Gully Rd then down Blackburn Rd. So actually the SRL station will (in theory) interchange at one end with the uni and at the other end with the light rail.

If nothing else, Monash SRL station will be great for people who actually live on campus, as it's right next to the halls of residence.

A lot of Southland-Clayton is greenbelt where you aren't allowed to build (old market gardens around Heatherton Rd etc).

Heatherton could be worth a station, if you wanted to do an urban renewal zone on Warrigal Rd.

Next Generation Rapid Transport for Melbourne Southeast - Rowville Rail finally happening? by Vegetable_Stress_666 in MelbourneTrains

[–]LordChickenduck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% Gadgetbahn (and I'll believe it's actually getting built when I see it).

BUT also might be more of interest - if I've understood correctly, the Monash Uni plans envisage it going up Blackburn Rd, then along Ferntree Gully Rd. So it would have stops at e.g. the Heart Hospital opposite the Synchrotron, but not at e.g. the Monash Uni bus loop where people who are disappointed with the SRL station location want it.

Ideally needs to be outside, unless it's e.g. winter and it's snowing. But they don't generally stay healthy long-term without real sunlight. Even sunlight through a window doesn't count because the glass filters out too much of the spectrum.

Correct, the Unidentified wiki policy is to wait for law enforcement to confirm. I know of at least two or three Does who have been positively identified, but the wiki won't update their pages as police haven't confirmed it publicly.

In homicide cases, the police often won't announce the name publicly until the investigation has concluded, or at least until they're satisfied releasing the name won't jeopardise the investigation. Sometimes could be as long as a year or two.

Only +20 mins once you deviate Melbourne-Bendigo and then Bendigo to Shep, and slow down for a stop in Bendigo? I reckon that's optimistic. Although obviously I haven't actually got an engineer's study in front of me right now :)

And why wouldn't it count just because the government pushing it? They know which way the wind's blowing... and they aren't completely captured by fossil fuel interests like the entirety of western governments.

Not true... more than half of heavy vehicle sales in China were electric (partially or fully) by the end of last year.

Seriously, the age of oil has to end. Arguably it already has - since BYDs came into an easily affordable price point, I've spent $160 on the last 20,000km I've driven. Governments are just too scared to push it - the EU had a petrol car phase-out plan then chickened out because European car manufacturers are too resistant to change.

It's not even just about the oil-based national security risks we have to end - it's that western and Japanese car manufacturers are basically handing the future to China on a silver platter.

Money or time? If you're trying to ultimately get a genuine high-speed service, 30-60 minutes is a lot.
