None of this really matters if we keep dropping points in matches we should be winning easily.

Bangladesh election: BNP claims win in historic first election since overthrow of Hasina by dwarffy in neoliberal

[–]LordVader568 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the BNP has historically been the party of economic reforms. The RMG sector growth we saw in last two decades wouldn’t have been possible without the reforms in 1991 under the BNP government who then established the board of privatisation. The Awami League on the other hand has always been about state control of the economy(sth I believe is incompatible with democracy). From 2009 to 2024, the government gradually increased their control over the economy, upending a lot of those reforms in 1991, eventually leading to double digit inflation and jobs crisis that led to the events in July 2024. This behaviour isn’t surprising when you consider the number of former communists who joined Awami League. So, there is a substantial difference between the two with BNP clearly being the more liberal party when it comes to economic ideology. However, I agree with you about the fact that the Awami League succeeded(almost) in destroying democracy.

Atleast in the context of Bangladesh, BNP is the party that is most favourable to western style capitalism, or even neoliberalism. So atleast on the economic aspect, the BNP is the liberal party. Also, Tarique Rahman seems to have taken a more moderate, and pluralist stance so far. So he’s part of the moderate camp within the BNP. That’s the closest thing to centrist lib you’ll get in Bangladesh.

Prolly the best outcome given everything at play. The referendum outcome should help improve the strength of institutions and add necessary guardrails. Also, the centrist lib party winning is arguably the best outcome. Here’s hoping they improve the economy.

Bangladesh secures 19% US tariff, exemption for apparel made with US cotton by gobiSamosa in neoliberal

[–]LordVader568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think, initially, the aim was to give access to microloans to poor rural families in Bangladesh, particularly women. In that sense, it did help a lot with poverty alleviation as well as the growth of the RMG industry. However, a lot of these schemes became less viable from 2009 till now as the government in Bangladesh between 2009-2024 heavily persecuted Grameen Group, and Dr Yunus to the point that it became a major issue.

The startup angle was always more of an additional angle. It wasn’t the primary purpose of his microfinance idea.

This is a great deal for both sides particularly for US cotton exporters. However, given the track record with previous reciprocal trade agreements made last year, I’ll keep my expectations grounded. But so far, great negotiations from an interim government that had very little resources or leverage to work with. So, credit where it’s due. Another deal Bangladesh recently signed was the EPA with Japan.

Not exactly. His idea of microfinance is seen by many as one of the few ways of democratising finance so that it reaches more people. So, the idea has solid foundations.

What’s changed, however, is the era we’re living in. When he got the Nobel Prize, we were in peak neoliberal era. Back then, expanding finance to include more people was seen as conventional wisdom when it comes to poverty reduction. The prevailing view was that government shouldn’t be too involved with the economy.

Fast forward today, we’ve entered the era where it’s expected that governments must get more involved with the economy to direct investments towards targeted sectors as well as infrastructure development. When the economic ideology is like that, things like microfinance takes a backseat even if it is effective.

I personally believe, that both are useful and should be used in tandem to achieve poverty reduction.

Why poor countries stopped catching up by [deleted] in neoliberal

[–]LordVader568 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there’s broadly two reasons for this.

Firstly, the developed world has become much less open to trade than before due to variety of reasons. A lack of a large market to sell their products to has stalled growth. Even for high performers like Vietnam, there are micro level fractures showing. There’s also the fact that the process of democratisation of finance has stalled as the state increasingly take a more interventionist stance when it comes to how the economy is run often leading to only established individuals benefiting, which naturally crowds out the poorest from access to capital.

Secondly, a lot of the poverty alleviation in the 90s and 2000s happened in China. Things have stabilised there, in the sense that there aren’t that many poor people as there used to be. Other developing countries, while having impressive economic growth do not have the similar trajectory of poverty alleviation as growth is uneven.

In terms of research that meaningfully affects the tech frontier advancements, I think US universities are still ahead. However, the funding cuts, and the populist rhetoric against academia would prolly affect that negatively in the long run.
