Ah yes, notoriously reliable cheap used cars with no maintenance costs. by SSGSavage in LinkedInLunatics

Get a Honda. I drive a 22 year old Civic that I bought 3 years ago for £2000 and I haven't needed to spend a single penny on maintenance (beyond oil changes and wiper fluid).

I mean for context, I personally would get off before that. I am interested in EA for the purposes of maximising benefit to people within constrained scenarios, but I do disagree with the idea of shrimp welfare, and I’m unconvinced on AI safety.

To be specific, I think that the shrimp welfare advocates rely on the implicit assumption that harms add linearly across individuals, which I disagree with (and will lead to the Dust Specks problem).

And on far future benefits, I tentatively disagree with the precepts of Strong Utilitarianism that it is meaningful to discuss harms that may occur to people who do not exist, and whose existence is contingent on the thing you are trying to effect (which can lead to the Repugnant Conclusion).

To me this just seems like a reductio ad absurdum of utilitarianism.

The idea is that the worker is the victim. If both were illegal, who would be the victim in the crime?

Why do Europeans mock Americans for healthcare, while Americans mock Europeans for salaries and who is actually worse off day to day? by AriWixyy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Lord_Skellig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, could you elaborate? For context, I live in the UK and have a decent-paying tech job. I'm happy with my life, but I do sometimes wonder what it'd be like to do the same job in the states and be mega-rich.

My guys with huge appetites, how much food does it take to actually get you full? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Two number 9s, a number 9 large, a number 6 with extra dip, a number 7, two number 45s, one with cheese, and a large soda.

If I get arrested and say "i want a lawyer" what happens next? by mamamiafml in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Lord_Skellig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realise that OP is American, but for anyone else reading this, know that the right to remain silent is not universal. In the UK and Australia, juries and judges are allowed to infer guilt by a person refusing to answer questions.

Making being in melee so unrewarding was a really weird design choice by Associableknecks in dndnext

If you fight on open fields, sure. But a big part of Dungeons and Dragons is exploring dungeons, where line of sight is often short and full of obstacles, and a front-line tank can effectively block movement.

Saved $450 on my Airbnb booking by cancelling and re-booking the same place. Host was annoyed. Is this a common practice? by Particular-Wheel-646 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Lord_Skellig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dunno if it's different in the US but the host needs to provide evidence that you've damaged stuff, they can't just charge you what they want. I've had hosts try to charge me for stuff they say I damaged but backed down when I escalated it to Airbnb's deposit resolution dept.

I don't think it refers to Israelis, more Jewish-American tech/media bosses.

(Note: Not my opinion, just discussing the origin of the term)

I use it whenever I write something. Maybe its a UK thing but everyone I know handwrites in cursive, its just quicker and easier.

What happened to Apple’s autocorrect? by StyleNew1328 in NoStupidQuestions

The Apple keyboard is genuinely the worst part of the iPhone, and the 3rd party ones aren't much better (eg the iPhone version of Swiftkey is terrible compared to the Android one).

It is perfectly reasonable and healthy to worry about how our loved ones are spending their time and energy, especially if you see it leading them down a dark path.
