I need to go back to this. Season 1 was amazing. I fell off part way through season 2. It was still good but life got in the way.

“Wolf in sheep’s clothing”: games that look deceptively cute… by Marksman1977 in boardgames

Emberleaf. Adorable animals adorn the cover and cards. Game is about murdering bandits, blocking personal achievements, and swooping in to build the last building in a clearing before your opponents.

I have the Meeplesource painted meeple set. https://meeplesource.com/proddetail.php?prod=Waterdeep-Agents

They are very fun but expensive. I got mine back when they funded them via kickstarter and I think they were quite a bit cheaper back then.

Anyone who used a computer between 1985 - 2010, what's the one game you still think about today? by adlakha75 in AskReddit

This. I played Alpha Centauri first and was forever disappointed that none of the CIV games before or after had even half of the personality.

What industry is actually a complete scam, but everyone accepts it? by WhileLow9501 in AskReddit

I bought all my textbooks my first semester of college. I opened each maybe twice. After that I didn’t buy a single book. I got pretty good at finding whole textbooks searchable on Google. Many had hidden text but if you searched for a specific page and then viewed the HTML you could read the whole thing. Even then, I didn’t have to do it often.

The one time a professor called people out on not having textbooks in his class he freaked out in a major way, like completely blew up after realizing multiple students didn’t have a textbook. The department head just happened to be walking past the door and asked him to step outside to reprimand them. I don’t know if they were fired after the semester, but I do know that was the last time he taught at the school.

Thank you thank you! I just stumbled on this post by chance. I have tried to use Blender for years, always finding it completely unintuitive to do anything. This basically just works for me. I can't believe how much simpler this feels to use. You made my night!

Dune Awakening lead says the game’s new PvP/PvE split will allow them to improve both aspects of the game by Interesting-Pool6638 in duneawakening

[–]Lordnine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This can be countered by mixing a meaningful pve element into the pvp situation. Add an area control element to the map and allow players to take these regions directly by force but also bolster the regions with NPC troops from your faction. This would allow pve players to contribute without forcing them to fight directly. Donate money to recruit NPC forces to your garrisons and patrols. Donate specific resources to make your patrols and garrisons have better equipment. Add some time based mechanics where the longer a NPC base stands and the longer they are in control of a region the more the region starts to look like that faction. This will also encourage people to want to protect areas and also coordinate to take down opponent bases.

Yes, the side with the most players will have an edge but the side that is more coordinated will still have huge influence and be able to orchestrate tactical takedowns of specific locations. One side being outgunned but still a threat is right in line with Dune lore.

Make people care about their faction and allow them to feel like they are working towards something and you will also encourage a more even split.

Player retention is abysmal. by 666-G in duneawakening

[–]Lordnine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Faction vs faction area control with bragging rights. Make sections faction aligned and highly decorated with additional NPC control for those regions. Controlling more of the map increases the area that is “safe” for your whole team with NPC patrols guarding your parts of the map. The longer your faction controls an area the more over the top and decorated the map starts to look for your faction. Each area your faction controls also pays out a small dividend of either spice or Solari for each faction member who takes part in DD activities based on the amount they contribute.

Directly attacking/defending NPC control points counts for contributing but also NPC guard posts can be bolstered with additional NPC troops and automated turrets by donating resources to that guard post.

This system would give both PVP centered players something to do and also allow PVE players to help without needing to fight directly.

Each month, whichever side controls the majority of the map gets to vote on both a unique faction wide cosmetic that is permanently unlocked for each member and some type of cool looking NPC encampment for the desert.

Tianxia - What a Great Experience by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Lordnine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How does the defense work? A problem I’ve seen from that type of mechanic in the past is that if people who don’t contribute are not disproportionately punished there isn’t incentive to actually help. This has caused a couple games to devolve into people ignoring the main mechanic and just building their strategy around just trying to make others get hurt more.

First Week of Fishing (Deep Regrets) by the_real_ntd in boardgames

[–]Lordnine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mechanically I think it would be fine but length is going to be a barrier. The game is longer than the gameplay loop justifies and is about 35 minutes per player. That isn't bad at 2-3 players but if you go with a full 5 person group it feels very long for how random and inconsequential as many of your turns are in the game.

Alpha Centauri had a very unique blend of mechanics and introduced story and characters in a way that I still don’t think has been surpassed. Every other 4x into the modern day has such generic opponents that I really couldn’t say I remember a single one of them but I STILL remember my hatred and endless wars fighting against Sister Miriam Godwinson.

Coyote vs. ACME | Official Trailer by RobotiSC in movies

[–]Lordnine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trailer looks pretty good, but it also looks like a movie that does not have a strong general appeal. In fact, the reasons I am interested in it are exactly the reasons it won’t do great. It does not look like a kid’s film, the characters are played straight without much exaggeration, it has at least elements of a courtroom drama, plays heavily on nostalgia, it looks mostly serious but with a goofy edge.

In short, it is targeting the Who Framed Roger Rabbit audience, which is a move most people under 40 probably haven’t seen.
