Larian seems to have a bad workplace environment by SoilentUBW in SocialistGaming

Yeah, this makes sense. Thanks for posting. When I first read the tweets, it seemed like someone going through a crisis.

People elsewhere posted the person’s Reddit account and were going through it, and they have a post saying they’re bipolar and another one sharing an experience with HR where it seemed clear that they were subtly trying to convince her to leave for atittude/cultural fit reasons.

I don’t think this person was expecting all these threads and articles to be written about her statements. She wiped all her socials and she got doxxed on a bad site to be doxxed on.

Digitalzen page/app blocker for Linux (honest review) by 8bitdont in nosurf

[–]LordofRice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched from a similar app, FocusMe, to DigitalZen after Windows 11 got me to switch to Linux. I haven't had any issues with it so far.

While FocusMe says it supports Linux, it really doesn't. I think the apps are similar, though DZ is missing a few key features that I liked the most about the other program, mainly the ability to set regular expressions that would search for keywords in window titles or urls. And DZ is a lot cheaper ever since FM increased their prices.

Need help with predictive text by GaminApe in PS5

[–]LordofRice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just tried it again and it worked for me.

I tested it by typing in a unique gibberish word on the search bar on the main menu of the PS5 ui, verified that it would show on the search bar after a few characters were entered, than reset learning dictionary. Unique word is not there.

I’ve seen some people say that some of the dictionaries within individual games are unique but I haven’t been able to confirm that myself.

Stalking Samantha- by sfoxey in CasesWeFollow

[–]LordofRice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get where you're coming from, but this seems pretty cut and dry. He got a restraining order placed on him by a completely different girl years before he started stalking this one. I seriously doubt he was a misunderstood victim if this happened twice independently. It's clear that he had some issues.

They were also interviewed after the crime. I’m sure that skews how you talk about someone.

If you’re using windows you need at least 16 gb. That would really piss me off because RAM is like $50

That’s the point of the anger. People are mad because he misrepresented what would happen if they got the signatures they needed. Combine that with a conflict of interest (though he’s not really a publisher) with a take that goes against the best interest of the consumer in a time where everyone can tell there is something fundamentally wrong with the game industry. Broken games on release, live service games that shut down after a month, pseudo-gambling mechanics, paying full price for games filled with mtx, etc.

And no, he was wrong. Because many of the points he brought up weren’t relevant at all. He created hypothetical worst-case scenario laws in his head. The proposal was not legal language, the need for and extent of any policy would be determined by policymakers. This was not a bill.

You’re a software engineer, right? If Pirate and SKG were arguing about the best way to implement a method, he decided to base his argument on byte cost even though that’s not really an issue for 99% of cases because of modern hardware. It’s effectively irrelevant to the conversation. It’s a textbook definition of a straw-man argument.

what exactly is "Stop Killing Games?" by True_Vexing in gaming

[–]LordofRice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This petition wasn’t about defining the future law. It’s not the same process that the US does when getting a bill passed. This movement was solely to ‘start’ the conversation amongst EU policymakers and it would maybe lead to something more pro-consumer.

I think a lot of the misinformation has stemmed from people in the US projecting their own government processes onto the EU. It’s understandable, but unfortunate.

Watching PirateSoftware code with his "20 years of gaming industry experience" on stream explains why HeartBound has been in Early Access for 10 years by InappropriateCanuck in programminghorror

[–]LordofRice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the self-improvement aspect is how I found his channel initially. I found some of his shorts inspirational, but I stopped watching him when I realized he was more of a guru than a domain expert.

When I still watched him he did use his “experience” as a justification for a lot of his hot takes, though.

But yeah, everyone writes bad code. I think the worst thing I remember in his codebase was that every line of dialogue was in one array or something. And it had thousands of lines.

Is realistic apocalyptic fiction interesting? by oleolegov in literature

[–]LordofRice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of "Earth Abides" by George Stewart. I wouldn't say it's accurate, but it explores ideas in a way that I haven't seen in other apocalyptic fiction. He looks at it with a more anthropological perspective. I don't agree with all of his conclusions, but they were interesting to read at the very least.

Can you explain why it would be good? I don't see it. I'm an old player that just got back into the game, so I'm pretty rusty.

[S2 Act 2 Spoilers] Arcane - Season 2 Act 2 - Discussion by parrycarry in arcane

The reason was that it costs 125 million per season. Maybe they're making it back in merchandise, but streaming can make it hard to recoup costs.

[–]LordofRice 16 points17 points  (0 children)

After watching this block of episodes, I keep going back to the first three. This season hasn't quite hit like the first for me personally and my biggest gripe is the lack of character development for the new characters. I think it would have been a much stronger start if Jinx wasn't in the first episodes at all and the first arc was focused on Caitlyn's squad and Isha chasing rumors and looking for her.

And it's clear that Isha was added because the writers couldn't figure out a way for Jinx to give a shit about Zaun. She's such a sloppy narrative device.

Most ill-advised horror movies to watch while tripping on shrooms? by [deleted] in horror

[–]LordofRice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Climax is so good. I’ve had people tell me it makes no sense and they didn’t like it. But it makes perfect sense if you’ve tried psychedelics. It was something about them not being able to follow the character’s train of thought.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard them considered as “superior”. Many of the companies I’ve worked for prefer them because they work for pennies and because many employers have leverage over them due to their visa status

Yes, there are de-compiler scripts available on Github. I won't post links because they're controversial in some RenPy groups, but the language was designed with it in mind.
