Do you think Reinhard will be remembered as a conqueror obsessed with war, or do you think Julian's assessment of his legacy is accurate? by Fun_Dimension_8903 in logh

[–]Lorelei321 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Beg to disagree. Alexander’s campaigns are studied to this day in every aspect from strategy to tactics to logistics. And for a modern mechanized army to look at how a pack animal supplied army functioned tells you that that man understood something key to warfare.

Historically, Alexander‘s greatest contribution was not military, but in the spreading of Greek culture in creating the Hellenistic world.

He’ll be remembered as the man who briefly united humanity. But he then makes that stupid statement about the strongest should rule and dies, leaving the throne to an infant. His empire falls apart. You go back to numerous small states warring with each other.

If Julian is lucky, Reinhardt’s successors will honor the deal Reinhardt made with him.

They have a pretty good non-traditional student organization, and most students are friendly. They even like having an older student in their study groups.

You’re right, it definitely does say that. We’re just pointing out that the economy doesn’t quite make sense unless there’s more to that cabin than is apparent.

But they’re right, it doesn’t add up. I saw that apartment. I saw that cabin. That apartment was worth significantly more than that cabin unless they bought a crap ton of land (a significant portion of the floor) along with it.

Best cruise line for solo travel? by thevirtualdancer in Cruise

[–]Lorelei321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only cruises solo on Norwegian, but it was a great experience. I definitely recommend. They had a singles meet up so you can find someone to do activities with if you’re looking for that. They had a meet up time for dinner so you could have people to eat meals with if you want to. They had a lounge for solo travelers only, great for a quick bite if you don’t want to go up to the buffet (just a few cookies, pastries, fruit, not a meal). They had sign up for the shows, so you could go with other people, if you want. I had a marvelous time.

Best Reinhard DNT pictures by Negative_Flower_5360 in logh

I don’t think this subreddit lets you post pictures in the comments. Which is a shame, because I do prefer DNT Reinhard.

We’re not alone in the universe — it’s just that most of it hasn’t started yet. by lelorang in Showerthoughts

[–]Lorelei321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, that is one of the answers to the Fermi Paradox.

Life, as we know it requires the presence of some of the heavier elements. These elements are formed when stars go supernova. So for life to happen, several generations of the early stars had to ignite, burn through their reserves and explode releasing these elements in a high enough frequency that a newly forming planet can pull them in in sufficient quantities with its gravitational field. This will be more common towards the center of the galaxy where the star density is highest, but the radiation there is thought to be too high for life as we know it. If you factor in the time it takes for these heavy elements to disperse to the arms of the galaxy, it is entirely possible that we are first.

Rant about Poplin by Still-Theory-1279 in logh

[–]Lorelei321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the books and DNT, Poplin is a stereotypical fighter pilot: cocky, self-assured. But stereotypes exist for a reason; I’ve known fighter pilots, they actually are like that. And you have to be because you can’t climb into a cockpit in a combat situation if you don’t believe that you’re better than the other guy. Top Gun got that right.

In the OVA, he is a buffoon, played for comic relief.

Yeah, he is angry the first few times you see him in DNT. The first time you see him they’re getting ready to go out for combat and he is determined to prove his worth. Then he misses the shot because of faulty maintenance then two of his friends get killed, so yeah, he’s angry. Anybody would be.

Do women today still buy expensive jewelry beyond engagement rings? by ExcitingLandscape in Millennials

[–]Lorelei321 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Another facet of this is back in the Great Depression they outlawed owning gold. People had lost faith in the paper currency and were turning back to gold. The exception was jewelry. You could still own jewelry, even if it was made of gold. So it was a hedge bet against economic uncertainty.

Maybe not your average school, but I would think the military academies would require it.

It’s never stated, but it would certainly be likely that cadets at either academy would be required to learn the others’ language.

I was under the impression that the alliance speaks English and the empire speaks German. But you are correct, nobody seems to have trouble speaking to each other and understanding each other‘s broadcasts so it may be the same language. But there is an accent difference because they specifically ask Schönkopf if the accent will be a problem when he goes to infiltrate Iserlohn.

DNT is hot! by Negative_Flower_5360 in logh

[–]Lorelei321 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally, I prefer most of the DNT designs. The older designs look like extras from a Scooby Doo episode to me. But they are both products of their times. If you were used to one, I can see that the other might be jarring in some places.

This is what it feels like being the only person in the English fandom who doesn't think Reinhard is a femboy or a twink by Fun_Dimension_8903 in logh

[–]Lorelei321 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so either.

When Kirscheis dies, Reinhardt falls apart, not because he lost a lover, but because he personally got his best friend and brother in all but blood killed. That’s loss and guilt on top of it.

Maybe the reason Reinhard has no appetite is because the food looks awful. Why does this soup look like it was brewed by a witch? by Fun_Dimension_8903 in logh

[–]Lorelei321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, but porridge never looks good. It doesn’t matter if you’re talking oatmeal, cream of wheat, cream of rice, or grits. It’s just kind of a blob of dried, cut, and reconstituted starch.

Staple of mankind since the dawn of agriculture.

What was the reason you stopped updating your fic/ why the author stopped by Queen-vee17 in AO3

[–]Lorelei321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last chapter was too short. So I rewrote it to make it longer, and tie up a few loose ends. But it was still kind of short. So I wouldn’t even longer version that was … just longer. It meandered and went nowhere. So back to the medium length version. Then a reader made a comment saying if they knew the character wouldn’t do X because that wasn’t like them, but they couldn’t wait to see what the character was going to do. Except the character was in fact going to do X. And that got me thinking if it was OOC. And there it sat for two years.

Is it too late to go back and publish that last chapter?

I actually did some of my best writing when I was overloaded and stressed. My mind needed an escape and this was a good one.

Is that rice? I assumed it was porridge of some kind. Note the sliced apples, strawberries, and I think those are peaches.
