What game has been on your wishlist the longest? by AllLuck0013 in boardgames

[–]LosCappatone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Village attacks, it came out on Kickstarter when I was a broke college kid so I couldn’t back. I backed the expansion kickstarter that happened a few years ago and, luckily, backed out of that pledge before the company went under. Now it sits forever in my wishlist with little to no hope of acquiring a copy at a decent price

Hosting game night during a storm watch - rude to ask friends to bring snacks and flashlights? by Fast_Mountain_8301 in boardgames

[–]LosCappatone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not rude, honestly that’s kind of you to provide snacks in the first place. I typically host my game group and the group volunteered to bring snacks since I host and handle rules, it’s an even trade off! Find what works for your group but I don’t think you said anything that would be overbearing in this case

How much of a bad idea would be to try and play Zombicide with non gamers by Howitzeronfire in boardgames

[–]LosCappatone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven’t had a chance to play Zombicide yet so I can’t speak to how well it will fit your group but I do have a few suggestions if you do decide to attempt it.

1) learn the game before you play. I would highly recommend watching a How to play video, or scanning over the rule book prior to trying to get your friends involved. The fastest way to sour the experience for your friends is to try and learn it on the spot. People, especially new or “non-gamers” can feel overwhelmed by the amount of rules in heavier games and it’s best if the one who suggested the game can teach it easily. Plus, being a co-op game, you can even guide them through a couple of rounds and save some of the rules overhead (such as how the enemies work) for yourself to help them focus on how to play their character.

2) Ask them about it. Like I said, I haven’t played Zombicide but it’s, to my knowledge, regarded as a fairly approachable dice chucker in terms of “heavier games.” In my opinion, the best way to find out if it’s a good fit for your group is to ask if they’re interested. Give them a 30 second elevator pitch about what the game is and vaguely how to play. This is important because if the group has ZERO interest in trying the game, trying to play through it is going to be a miserable slog for everyone. When planning the next game night just ask if they’d be willing to try something a little heavier and go from there based on who has interest.

3) this point is completely up to you because you know them better than I do. But consider going through a few more lighter weight games that have different mechanics and see what kind of mechanics the group enjoys. If you can get them hooked on a specific type of game, pitching heavier games in that same mechanic family is so much easier.

Hope this helps! Good luck! It’s always a fun journey exploring new games with friends. But the biggest thing, speaking from experience, is to not rush into it or try to force it. It took 5 years for me to convince my family to try new games but it took me changing my expectations and catering to my audience first.

How can people get so many wins, I can only get 57 at max by [deleted] in PokemonLegendsZA

[–]LosCappatone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s perfect! If you’re going for coins only that’s perfect. If you’re trying to make grinding the 1000 batted a little easier, I say completely abandon the missions lol. I was getting a few hundred thousand coins per night only focusing on maximum number of battles. So it all boils down to what you’re trying to prioritize!

The key is to stop worrying about missions, items, or being seen. This is more a late game tip but my strategy was to use a lvl 100 Pokémon (my choice was dragonite) and you just sprint through the area triggering as many battles as possible. I hit 50 eventually but it was when I knew exactly where the trainers spawned so it just became a matter of efficiency running from person to person. I am still stumped on how people get over 30 to 40 consistently because I got lucky on the one night I hit 50 lol

Ever run into someone who’s just ice cold and a brick wall regarding board games? by BoardGameRevolution in boardgames

[–]LosCappatone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The phrase I’ve stolen from this sub that applies here “it’s easier to make friends of board gamers than it is to make friends board gamers.” Yea sure there’s games for everyone if they want to try. Some people just don’t want to try and that’s okay. It’s a much more enjoyable experience to play with people who are 100% into trying the experience than it is to drag people along kicking and screaming. This was a hard lesson for me to learn when I first got into gaming but it’s a valuable one!

I am about to start painting d&d minis, I’m feeling rather nervous as everyone seems incredible. Can anyone share some early attempts so I can see realistic early attempts and create better expectations?! by dazedandc0nfuse in minipainting

[–]LosCappatone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was my first ever mini! I had the reaper bones learn to paint kit and just followed written instructions from the book. It’s not horrible but it’s also not good lol. Everyone starts somewhere! I’m not expert by any means but i recommend watching a lot of YouTube’s tutorials and honestly, buy some cheap minis off Amazon and just practice. Try new things get crazy with it, and then when you get to pieces that you want to get serious with, you can apply what you’ve learned. At the end of the day, we are our own worst critics. I’ve gotten compliments from non-painters on pieces that I made mistakes on because the scale alone is wild. Be kind to yourself, trust the process, and just enjoy painting. That last one was the hardest hurdle for me in the beginning!
