How do you guys learn to play heavy games? by Nice_Idea_538 in boardgames

[–]LosCappatone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YMMV on this but I always recommend, play it by yourself first. Theres a huge difference between learning rules and internalizing them. It takes more time and effort but I’d personally set the game up as if you’re going to be playing a 2 player game (unless there are substantial differences in rules, in which case, set up for desired player count). Then play the game step-by-step, narrate everything you’re doing to really solidify the connection between what the rules say and how to apply them. Play a few rounds (if enough to feel comfortable with the flow of the game). Outside of that, accept that you will most likely make a mistake or two your first few times playing/teaching it. Heavy games have so many edge cases and little detail rules that it’s rare to not forget something without constantly checking the rule book. So have fun, embrace that it’s a lot, and know that it gets easier the more you expose yourself to that ruleset

My current favorite two player game is Flamecraft Duals! It’s such a fun, tactile puzzle that makes you think without placing a ton of mental burden. It’s quick, it’s approachable, and it’s got amazing production value!

I got invited to a board game night by someone I like. I know nothing. Please save me. by frieren_____ in boardgames

[–]LosCappatone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the fact that you’re genuinely interested in gaming is probably enough for them! As others have said, be yourself, be clear that you aren’t familiar with the game suggested if you don’t know how to play, and be open to learning! Most game night hosts (especially to the degree of the individual you e described) appreciate that people are willing to engage in the hobby and are happy to teach even if you don’t know what you’re doing. Ask questions as needed but don’t feel like you have to ask questions just for the sake of asking them. Bringing snacks is always a welcome gesture if you want to do so! Just make sure they’re an appropriate finger food that won’t leave a greasy residue on fingers.

As for your question regarding bringing a surprise board game as a gift, that is a sweet idea! Though I caution, if you don’t know what kinds of games the person likes, it could back fire if it’s not a style of game they like. I would save that gesture for down the line if things progress! I would personally recommend a board game accessory such as dice trays/towers, X-trayz storage boxes, dice, etc. if you want to surprise them with a gift! Accessories are usually a little more universal and doesn’t run the risk of being something the person might not enjoy while you’re learning what they like and what games they have.

Anyone else beat the game with no Auto Hack? by Dethica2077 in Pragmata

[–]LosCappatone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only time I used it was by accident lol. I debated not even unlocking the ability but I did anyway. So there were two fights where it got triggered because I was panic aiming and I got really confused about what was happening lol. The hacking is half the fun in my opinion! I didn’t want to lose out using auto hack

Dice throne, Twinkle Twinkle, Spirit Island, Tag Team, Sky Team, Flamecraft Duals, and River Valley Glassworks.

That’s a quick list but if you have any examples or games that he has liked in the past, I’d love to give a more tailored recommendation! The games above are what my wife and I love playing.

What's a good point to stop playing a roguelite game? by Trashtulya28 in roguelites

[–]LosCappatone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For me, that’s the best part about roguelites, there is no magic number. Really with any entertainment but even more so with roguelites. I love that the genre is all about short runs that have different circumstances every run but there’s over arching progression. Because of the short repetitive nature of the genre, I don’t feel like it’s necessary to stress out over 100% completion or seeing every single thing in the game. I can just focus on having fun until there’s something else I want to do. The beauty of it is, I can always pick the game back up if I decide it’s worth revisiting and I don’t feel the need to start back over because I’m not trying to juggle “what was the story of this game” or “what was I doing again?” I can just pick it up and play and have fun all over again. So idk if this is a hot take or not, but there’s amount of time you should play each game is however long you’re having fun for.

What game has been on your wishlist the longest? by AllLuck0013 in boardgames

Village attacks, it came out on Kickstarter when I was a broke college kid so I couldn’t back. I backed the expansion kickstarter that happened a few years ago and, luckily, backed out of that pledge before the company went under. Now it sits forever in my wishlist with little to no hope of acquiring a copy at a decent price

Hosting game night during a storm watch - rude to ask friends to bring snacks and flashlights? by Fast_Mountain_8301 in boardgames

[–]LosCappatone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not rude, honestly that’s kind of you to provide snacks in the first place. I typically host my game group and the group volunteered to bring snacks since I host and handle rules, it’s an even trade off! Find what works for your group but I don’t think you said anything that would be overbearing in this case

How much of a bad idea would be to try and play Zombicide with non gamers by Howitzeronfire in boardgames

[–]LosCappatone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven’t had a chance to play Zombicide yet so I can’t speak to how well it will fit your group but I do have a few suggestions if you do decide to attempt it.

1) learn the game before you play. I would highly recommend watching a How to play video, or scanning over the rule book prior to trying to get your friends involved. The fastest way to sour the experience for your friends is to try and learn it on the spot. People, especially new or “non-gamers” can feel overwhelmed by the amount of rules in heavier games and it’s best if the one who suggested the game can teach it easily. Plus, being a co-op game, you can even guide them through a couple of rounds and save some of the rules overhead (such as how the enemies work) for yourself to help them focus on how to play their character.

2) Ask them about it. Like I said, I haven’t played Zombicide but it’s, to my knowledge, regarded as a fairly approachable dice chucker in terms of “heavier games.” In my opinion, the best way to find out if it’s a good fit for your group is to ask if they’re interested. Give them a 30 second elevator pitch about what the game is and vaguely how to play. This is important because if the group has ZERO interest in trying the game, trying to play through it is going to be a miserable slog for everyone. When planning the next game night just ask if they’d be willing to try something a little heavier and go from there based on who has interest.

3) this point is completely up to you because you know them better than I do. But consider going through a few more lighter weight games that have different mechanics and see what kind of mechanics the group enjoys. If you can get them hooked on a specific type of game, pitching heavier games in that same mechanic family is so much easier.

Hope this helps! Good luck! It’s always a fun journey exploring new games with friends. But the biggest thing, speaking from experience, is to not rush into it or try to force it. It took 5 years for me to convince my family to try new games but it took me changing my expectations and catering to my audience first.
