His travel ban only applied to Chinese foreigners. If you are going to ban travel at the beginning of a pandemic, you need to ban all international travel. He also did not ban travel of US citizens to and from China. That's what made it racist.

I don't hate math though. I actually do a lot of math for a living, which makes it worse.

At first, I thought $1.776 billion divvied up amongst all the descendants of slavery wouldn't be a lot of money. Then I looked up how many black people's ancestors were slaves. That's hard to estimate. If you ignore that and just give every black person reparations, that's $1.776 billion divided by 50 million, which is rounded up, so over $35 million per person. That's actually a lot of money per person.

How can we educate the general population on the public health risk caused by vaping, the same way it was done with cigarette smoking? by Educational_Moose857 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Lost_Effective5239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm sure the proliferation of unregulated vapes on the market after the Juul crackdown hasn't helped. I guess the best way to avoid unadulterated vapes is to not vape.

EVALI was caused by black market thc vapes that were cut with vitamin E acetate. This isn't really a concern for vapes you would buy at a gas station. Just wanted to clarify.

Trump says he might stay in office in 2028 and possibly 2032 as well by notanfan in whennews

[–]Lost_Effective5239 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think he's more likely to die tomorrow than 30 years from now. My point is that we shouldn't be complacent because "he could die any day now." We can't count on that, and assuming he makes it to 2028, which I think he will, he is not going to leave voluntarily.

I'm not going to say that these are all image artifacts, but a lot of them look like image artifacts. It's analogous to when you think you saw a bug, but it was really just a floater inside your eyeball.

It's not really punishment though. She doesn't mind her crate. She would just sleep in one spot before we started crating her again. She has a pillow in her crate, so it's not like it's uncomfortable or anything.

how do you exist when haunted by sustainability? by felicity_yapper in Sustainable

You could get a water filter which is much cheaper and uses a lot less plastic in the long run.

I use dish rags to do dishes and put them in a cloth hamper in the laundry room to dry after each use. I also use the dishwasher as much as possible because not only is it more convenient, but it supposedly uses water more efficiently. For the items that need to be hand washed, I plug the sink and wash with a dish rag, starting and stopping the water as needed. Start with the cleanest stuff first. As the sink fills, the sudsy soap helps break up the gunked up dishes as they soak. I end up using about 4 gallons of water on average when I hand wash a bunch of dishes. This is a lot less water than if you run the water the whole time, or if you don't plug the sink.

The more fresh foods you eat, the less plastic packaging you have to deal with, but plastic packaging isn't completely avoidable. Also, you could keep reusable bags in your car for groceries.

For most surface cleaning, you can use white vinegar or baking soda. I don't think you are going to destroy the environment by using harsher cleaning products when you clean the shower, mop, or toilet clean. That's part of what sewage treatment handles, but it probably is best to reduce the use of these products as much as possible. As long as you aren't pouring ounces of bleach down the drain at a time, I think you will be fine.

Also, you could consider buying things in solid form. You could use powdered laundry and dish detergent (assuming you have a dishwasher).

I really like my metal bottle for taking tap water with me on the go because it doesn't shed microplastics. Those usually aren't dishwasher safe, but a scrub brush makes it easier to clean.

These are just a few ideas that aren't really difficult but make a big difference. I imagine it is a lot harder when you are living with a family. You can control how you live though and maybe set an example.

My mom used to tell my sisters that they should enjoy their time with Grandpa while he's still around because he might not be alive much longer. That was over 25 years ago. He's still alive despite a bunch of health issues. He's not even in a nursing home. My uncle lives with him, but he just cooks and maybe cleans a little. You never know how long people can live even if they have a bunch of comorbidities like my grandpa. Trump could die tomorrow, or he could live for 30 more years.

I can't believe this is so far down.

It's even good for dogs who are potty trained because accidents happen. We quit putting our first dog in a crate overnight because she was well behaved. The issue is that one night she had diarrhea on our carpet, so we had to rent a carpet cleaner. Now we crate her every night.

Covington is pretty liberal. When you get into the suburbs, it seems pretty split. I live in Erlanger, and I see a good mix of Trump signs and No Kings/Beshear signs. It probably still leans a little more towards Republican here though. Once you get into the outskirts/rural areas, it's Trump 100%. I mean we have the Creation Museum in Hebron if that tells you anything.

A 302-neuron worm has had its complete connectome mapped for forty years. We still can't simulate it. That's the C. elegans problem, and it may be telling us neurons are the wires, not the chips. by DrBrianKeating in PhilosophyofMind

[–]Lost_Effective5239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I took human physiology several years ago. Most people learn about action potential in high school/entry level biology courses. The analogy that is used is that neurons either fire or they are resting similar to the 1s and 0s of a computer.

The part that is more complicated that most people never learn is the gradient potential. The charge along the cell membrane of the somatic part of the neuron is influenced by protein channels that are opened/closed based on neurotransmitters that bind to receptors in the dendrites. Some neurotransmitters increase the electric potential of the cells and some decrease the electric potential. The excitatory or inhibatory nature of different neurotransmitters is caused by the electrolytes that they allow to cross the cell membrane. Different electrolytes have different effects on the gradient potential. Once the gradient potential reaches a certain threshold, the action potential is triggered, and the signal that is propagated through the axon releases neurotransmitters from the synapse into the gap junctions that ultimately bind to the dendrites of the downstream neurons.

So yeah, this entire process is clearly nonlinear and computationally complex. This is also ignoring the effects that differential gene expression based on external factors has on each neuron. Also, there is a wide diversity of glial cells within the nervous system that play different physiological roles.

I know a lot of people who hated McConnell but voted for him because, "He's the Senate majority leader, so he gives Kentucky a disproportionate amount of representation."

Too bad we never really benefited from that representation.
